Rationale

Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use computers and related
technology efficiently. Another Valuable component is understanding how computers work and
Operate. According to Hoffman and Blake, (2003), Computing and technology departments
often offer service courses in Computer Literacy that provide the Entire academic community
with the opportunity to develop skills in the use of computers. However Senior High School
students Computer is used for many purposes especially for improving and supporting in
education System. According to Liao and Pope, (2008) computer literacy course should teach
students to be passionate about and efficient with computers, students can learn useful skills to
improve their capability of using computer. There are three levels of computer literacy: basic,
intermediate, and proficient. Students can operate computer as well as possible, but most of
them have lack of knowledge about using computers. Defining computer Literacy is like trying
to define “life,” “space” or “energy”—pursuits that may be entertaining but don’t really bring
much to the bottom line or shorten your to-do list….Computer literacy may be hard to define,
but computer illiteracy is costly (Coffee, 2006).

The researchers observed that Grade 12 TVL-CSS Senior High School Students have a lot

of interest to learn managing computer devices, but school has lack of computer devices and

other hardware devices that can make Students well-trained about the different features of

computer devices. The researchers find out that most of Grade 12 TVL-CSS students have lack

access of computer devices at their home like laptops , Tablets etc., that can make them more

adept and knowledgeable at using computer devices. Thus, this study will be conducted at Pajo

National High School Senior High School (PAJO NHS-SHS). Since the participants can easily

be reach and can give their responses..

In an international study, among 122 Ukrainian Secondary School 53.3% of the students

used computers in School once a week while 33.5% showed that they never used a computer in

school (Yukhymenko and Brown 2009). In Ghana, Sarfo and Anshong-Gyimah (2011) surveyed

to examine access to ICT tools and experiences in the use of ICT among 300 Senior High

School students. The researchers discovered that a small percentage of the students had access to

computers which could be used to support learning. In Esan West Local Government Area, Edo
State, Nigeria, Aitokhuehi (2014) found that Computer literate students perform better than non

-computer literate; computer literate female students perform better than male students who are

also computer literate; computer literate students who are not addicted to the use of computer

facilities perform better than those who are addicted.

Furthermore, Computer literacy training involves numerous unresolved issues between

school district administrators and teachers. One primary issue resides in school district financial

capability to offer updated training in technology skills; this is juxtaposed against the lack of

teacher desire to gain essential expertise through professional development programs. Many

school boards across the country generally allot a little over 1% of a school district’s budget for

professional development (Gupta, 2002).

Nationally, Jorlan C. Indrinal (2021) stated that in order to improve students’ knowledge

and literacy in database applications, webpage design, and basic computer programming an

enhancement program may be applied to the specialization or integrated into other ICT subjects.

The digital revolution has had a significant impact on daily life, as shown by the widespread use

of devices and the seamless incorporation of technology into everyday activities. The digital

revolution has had a significant impact on daily life, as shown by the widespread use of devices

and the seamless incorporation of technology into everyday activities. According to La Union

and Gamboa (2021) there are numerous issues are to be encountered by students. It includes the

lack of financial resources to purchase a computer and the non-utilization of Information and
Communications.

This study adopted a student perspective to examine the factors affecting their use of

computers. Unsurprisingly, the results indicated that situational factors (e.g. access, training and

time) influence the extent to which students use computers, but a disparity was found in the

importance attributed to these factors by the academic staff, who focused on the needs of their

department, and by the students, who focused on their individual need. Results suggest that

increased attention to a student perspective may lead to improved strategic planning in students’

use of computers.

This study aims to investigate the factors that affect Senior high School Students Computer

Literacy. Researchers was eager to identify and locate the barriers that influence the students

capability on using computer devices.

Theoretical Conceptual Background of the Study

This present study aims to identify the factors affecting Senior High School Computer

literacy. Explores the impact of media and technology on society. Students can critically analyze

the role of computers in their lives, understanding ethical considerations, and becoming

responsible digital citizens. Collaborative projects and group activities can enhance senior high

school students’ computer literacy by promoting knowledge sharing and teamwork..

Opportunities for computer learning in our nation’s schools are increasing, but inequities

continue. Low-income, female, and rural students are especially disadvantaged in receiving

computer experiences and computer literacy in school (Anderson 1983). Other institutions are
considering eliminating introductory computer courses with the expectation that students will

demonstrate adequate computer knowledge through the proficiency examination. This assumes

that students have acquired both computer knowledge (concepts) and computer skills

(applications) in high school or through other personal experiences (Wallace and Clariana 2005).

Another theory stated by Kobiatko, 2007 computer literacy of students is improving

Students can use the internet and computers in school most often after lessons. Given to the wide

range of computer skills among students, a single computer course for all students would not be

useful nor would it be accepted. Special measures should be taken to prevent students who lack

computer skills from being disadvantaged or from developing computer-hostile attitudes (Link

and Marz 2006). Students’ computer literacy typically develops through a combination of

educational institutions, self-learning, and practical experiences. Practical experiences, such as

using computers for projects and assignments, contribute significantly to the development of

computer literacy.

This current study is being pursued for the reason that senior high school students need to

be proeficient in using computer devices. The development of computer literacy is often

influenced by educational programs, exposure to technology at home, and personal initiatives to

explore and learn about digital tools. Thus, this study was helpful to investigate the computer

literacy of TVL-CSS Senior High School Students. However, the level of computer literacy

among students can vary based on factors such as educational programs, access to technology,

and individual initiative for self-directed learning. As technology continues to evolve,

maintaining and advancing computer literacy remains an ongoing process for students.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapters describe and discusses the research design to be used, research environment,

it’s participants, instruments to be utilized in conducting the study, data gathering procedures ,

which are all vital in investigating the factors that influence Senior High School Students

computer Literacy.

Research Design

This present study utilized descriptive research method.

A descriptive research method is a type of research design that you can identify patterns in the

characteristics of a group to essentially establish everything you need to understand apart from

why something has happened. It provides a comprehensive characteristics and behaviors of a

particular population or phenomenon, allowing researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the

topic.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted in one of the public schools in Lapu-lapu city Division.

However computer is very usable nowadays both academic and TVL track, teachers was

observing the progress of senior high students computer literacy to be more passionate in and

efficient to perform with their strands. One of the strands the researchers want to take action is

the TVL- CSS track the researcher see that this strand is more focusing on computer devices and

they want to know how they are capable at using computer devices.
Research Participants

The participants of this research study are the Grade 12 TVL-CSS Senior High School

Students in one of the public schools in Lapu-lapu City. They are identified through the

purposive sampling technique since it has been an observation that these clusters of students are

noticeably lack of skills and knowledge about using computer devices. Moreover , this study will

utilize TVL Computer System Servicing (CSS) students who are the main target of the

researchers. This study includes approximately 40 TVL-CSS students.

The identification of research participants will be done through the utilization of purposive

Sampling method, a type of sampling technique in which participants are selected since they are

Seen as the best source of information or they fit best to the criteria being set. There will be 40

students from TVL-CSS track. These students are very known for using computer devices.
