THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter focuses on the discussion of the problem and its background,

statement of the problem, conceptual framework and paradigm, scope and

limitation, significance of the study and definition of terms which were used in the

study.

Introduction

These past years technology became more and more advance, gathering

massive achievements that change the course of history. Technology allows

humans to rapidly climb to the new era called The Era of Information or

Information Age. It is a historic period beginning in the 20th century and

characterized by the rapid shift from traditional industry that the Industrial

Revolution brought through industrialization to an economy primarily based upon

information technology. Technology affects humanity in many different ways, its

influence increase throughout the passed years. One of the best common

example of technology influence is the production of gadgets such as Cellular

phones , Computers, Television etc. But there is one invention that shook the age

of technology, and that is the Internet. Internet is a global computer network

providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of

interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. This

means that you can acquire the information that you want by using the internet.

Education plays a very important role in the society. Majority of the people

believes that your future lies on the level of education you’ve achieved. Because

of this perspective the government continuously improves its education system.

And due to rapid progress of technology such as cell phones, computer and other

advance technologies. The government needs to find a better solution to cope

with the changes. And the government found a very promising solution and that is

to use the internet. This solution is called E-Learning educational system. This

educational system aims to use the advance technology which is the internet to

its advantage, this system also aims to provide a better learning material for the

students to use for educational purposes.

Background of the Study

Understanding eLearning is simple. eLearning is learning utilizing

electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional

classroom. In most cases, it refers to a course, program or degree delivered

completely online.

There are many terms used to describe learning that is delivered online, via

the internet, ranging from Distance Education, to computerized electronic

learning, online learning, internet learning and many others. We define eLearning

as courses that are specifically delivered via the internet to somewhere other than

the classroom where the professor is teaching. It is not a course delivered via a

DVD or CD-ROM, video tape or over a television channel. It is interactive in that

you can also communicate with your teachers, professors or other students in

your class. Sometimes it is delivered live, where you can “electronically” raise

your hand and interact in real time and sometimes it is a lecture that has been

prerecorded. There is always a teacher or professor interacting /communicating

with you and grading your participation, your assignments and your tests.

eLearning has been proven to be a successful method of training and education is

becoming a way of life for many students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the impact of E-learning on the

Academic Performance of Grade 11-ICT Students of AMA Computer

College Calamba Campus Academic Year 2019-2020.

Furthermore, it seeks to answer these following questions;

1. What is the demographic profile of each respondent in terms of:

1.1) age

1.2) Gender

1.3) Average Grade (from last grading if unknown leave it

blank)

2. What are the factors that affect the use of internet as a learning

method?

2.1) Internet Connectivity

2.2) Electric Device/s

2.3) Internet Accessibility

Theoretical Framework

Due to the rapid progress of technology, the government tries to find a

effective solution to improve the educational system. And thus the E-learning

educational system invented. This system has its pros and cons. There are tons

of articles and theories that explaines the advantages of the system. A theory that

is written by Kibuku R. N. and Ochieng D. O.(2018) “Despite the significant growth

and development of e-learning we still do not have a relevant theory specifically

stipulated to guide the practice up to date. The design, implementation and

delivery of e-learning have been informed by the 20th Century classical theories

of learning namely: Behaviorism, Cognitivism and Constructivism. In 2005, we

saw the inclusion of the Connectivist theory of learning for the digital era.

However, certain lacunae exist in these classical learning theories that need

further examination and explanation. This research study therefore seeks to

identify the contributions of the classical learning theories to e-learning as well as

establish the gaps that exist in these theories in their application to e-learning with

a view of extending the connectivist theory into an e-learning theory using the

Grounded Theory (GT) Methodology”. The government continuously conducting

experiments to outweigh the cons of these system. The E-learning system is

implement on different schools and even universities throughout the globe. The

researchers are conducting a surveys to find out the satisfactory and the

effectiveness of the E-learning .

Conceptual Framework

To make the research more inclusive, the researchers present a paradigm which

will be the guide throughout the study. This is elaborated further in the figure

Scope and Limitation

This study will be conducted to identify the impacts of E-Learning on the

Academic Performance of Grade 11 ICT Students of AMA Computer College

Calamba Campus Academic Year 2019-2020. Primarily, The Researchers are

going to define the different impacts of using Internet as a learning/teaching

method. meanwhile, this study will focus only to E-learning impact on Academic

Performance of Students .Other learning methods is not included in this study,

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this is to figure out the different impacts of E-learning on the

Academic performance of students. This research can contribute to the way of

informing the students on how E-learning affects them. It will benefit to the

following:

To Students. Students will be more knowledgeable about the impact of E-

learning in towards their academic performance.

To Researchers. This will help the researchers to be more informed about

E-learning

To future Researchers. The future researchers will have ideas about their

own research that will help them to gather more data
