Hello my name is Amogh, I’m from 9c.

The topic I’m going to speak about today is about former Indian
congressman sardar vallabhai patelji‘s contribution to the youth of India.

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was an Indian barrister and statesman, one of the leaders of the Indian
National Congress and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India. He was also a former home
minister and deputy chief minister of India.

Sardar was given to him as a tittle meaning “chief”. Other names are “iron man of India” and “Bismarck
of India”

He played a huge role in the national movement, civil disobedience movement and forming of the
constitution. His major contribution was his skillful display of diplomacy, in uniting the princely states of
India.

He was a devoted follower of Gandhi and declined his nomination of prime minister, because Gandhi
preferred Nehru. Criticism arose from the media and other politicians that Patel's home ministry had
failed to protect Gandhi. Emotionally exhausted, Patel tendered a letter of resignation, offering to leave
the government. Patel's secretary persuaded him to withhold the letter, seeing it as fodder for Patel's
political enemies and political conflict in India. Nehru, Rajagopalachari and other Congressmen publicly
defended Patel. Moved, he supported Nehru in all his leadership. Though they criticized each other’s
policy, they worked very well together.

Now coming to the topic of discussion, what was this great man’s contribution to
the youth of India? He serves as an ideal role model with hard will and spotless
ideals. He himself had done many things for the youth of India.
Leadership
Prime Minister Nehru was intensely popular with the masses, but Patel enjoyed the loyalty and the faith
of rank and file Congressmen, state leaders and India's civil services. He along with Nehru and
Rajagopalachari formed the triumvirate which ruled India. Patel was a senior leader in the Constituent
Assembly of India and was responsible in a large measure for shaping India's constitution. Patel was the
chairman of the committees responsible for minorities, tribal and excluded areas, fundamental rights
and provincial constitutions. He worked closely with Muslim leaders to end separate electorates and the
more potent demand for reservation of seats for minorities When the Pakistani invasion of Kashmir
began in September 1947, Patel immediately wanted to send troops into Kashmir. But agreeing with
Nehru and Mountbatten, he waited till Kashmir's monarch had acceded to India. Patel then oversaw
India's military operations. Patel, along with Defence Minister Baldev Singh administered the entire
military effort, arranging for troops from different parts of India to be rushed to Kashmir. Patel strongly
advised Nehru against going for arbitration to the United Nations, insisting that Pakistan had been
wrong to support the invasion and the accession to India was valid. He did not want foreign interference
in a bilateral affair. Patel opposed the release of Rs. 550 million to the Government of Pakistan,
convinced that the money would go to finance the war against India in Kashmir. The Cabinet had
approved his point but it was reversed when Gandhi, who feared an intensifying rivalry and further
communal violence, went on a fast-unto-death to obtain the release.

These leadership qualities inspire today’s youth and hopefully make many more leaders like him.
What can we learn from him
He was a man of his word and a devoted nationalist. Although he had a difference of opinion with
Nehru, he never questioned his decision. He has yet and again proved that “actions speak louder than
words”.

The current generation has witnessed erosion in values in all age groups be it in young old or politicians.
His vision, integrity, commitment to the nation and its people, the ability to take tough decisions come
what may be and then stand by them have lot to offer to us all.

A beautiful quote of the great can make us all learn a few things.

“If work is to be worshipped than laughter is life.one who takes life too seriously must prepare him for a
miserable existence.one should take life’s joys and sorrows with equal facility to get the best of life”

I would describe sardar vallabhai Patel as, a man with liberal thinking who gave little importance to
religion in politics. He had zero tolerance for corruption and was a determined, loyal and faithful
nationalist. He was not interested in fame and popularity and led a simple life. His courage helped him
make tough decisions that proved to be right.

Thus, I conclude my humble speech with one last message. I can safely promise
that everyone can learn something for their lives from the life of this great man
who sacrificed everything for the unity, safety an independence of our vast
country India. Thank you.
