Jazz Technical Requirements (part 2 courses) 

For instrumental students: sight reading will be assessed in addition to the requirements below 
 
 
 
 
Jazz Guitar 
Year 1 
Scales/Modes 
Scales/Modes in 12 keys, ascending and descending, number of octactes as determined 
by tutor. Major and minor scales (melodic and harmonic minor), chromatic scale, modes 
of the major scale (dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian, locrian). In 8th notes, at 
a ‘slow/steady’ tempo determined by tutor.  
 
Arpeggios 
Arpeggios in 12 keys, ascending and descending, triads in major and minor, as well as 
chords to the 7th. Number of octaves as determined by tutor.  
 
One other piece of technical work to be chosen in consultation with the tutor.   
Digital patterns, chord work, transcription, etude, study. 
 
Year 2 
Scales/Modes  
Scales from year 1 “may be requested”. In addition, modes of the melodic minor scale. 
8th notes, at a ‘medium’ tempo determined by tutor. 
 
Arpeggios  
Arpeggios in 12 keys, ascending and descending, chords to the 9th (including b9). 
Number of octaves as determined by tutor.  
 
One other piece of technical work to be chosen in consultation with the tutor.   
Digital patterns, chord work, *transcription, etude, study. 
 
Year 3 
Scales/Modes  
Scales from year 1 & 2 “may be requested”. In addition, symmetrical scales (diminished, 
whole tone), bebop scales (major and minor). 8th notes, at a ‘fast’ tempo determined by 
tutor. 
 
Arpeggios  
Arpeggios in 12 keys, ascending and descending, chords to the 13th (including b9) e.g., 
dom 13, maj13, mi13, mi-maj13. Number of octaves as determined by tutor.   
 
One other piece of technical work to be chosen in consultation with the tutor.   
Digital patterns, chord work, *transcription, etude, study. 
 
 
 
* Any student who is undertaking 2623QCM Transcription (and completing a transcription for that 
course) must present a different transcription for the tech exam.
