Generally, the study was conducted to determine the effect of varying particle size on the physical and
mechanical properties of rice straw particle board. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the tensile and
compressive strength of rice straw particle board. Also, the study sought to determine its water absorption
capacity, thickness swelling and cost of producing rice straw particle board. Particle board was prepared using
rubber latex as binder. Samples of particle board with a constant dimension of 12mmx200mm x500mm were
produced at five different board thicknesses as treatment. The treatments were as follows: Treatment 1 = 10mm,
Treatment 2 = 20mm, Treatment 3 = 30mm, Treatment 4 = 40mm and, Treatment = 50mm. Samples of particle
board were sundried to approximately 14% moisture content before subjecting to mechanical and physical
property tests. Result of the study showed that Treatment 3 at 30mm rice straw particle size registered the
highest tensile strength and compressive strength as compared with the other treatments. This particle size could
be the optimum size as to tensile and compressive strength. However, in terms of water absorption, Treatment
3 registered the greatest water absorption capacity of 122.78% when soaked in water under room temperature
for 24 hours. On the other hand, Treatment 2 exhibited the least amount of water absorbed with 99.88% water
absorption capacity. In terms of thickness swelling, Treatment 5 was observed to be the best as it exhibited the
lowest amount thickness swelling. Hence, it can be concluded that the higher the particle size of rice straw, the
lower is the thickness swelling. Moreover, Treatment 3 could be the optimum size as to tensile and compressive
strength while Treatment 2 had the lowest water absorption capacity.
