Background
The Mean Platelet Volume / MPV is a routine examination to measure an average platelet
size. The value itself can used to assess platelet production activity in the bone marrow.

Aim
We studying the role of MPV to predict outcomes of adult patients with sepsis.

Method
The method in this study was a prospective cohort with MPV value in the first 1-2 days at the
hospital at dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital, Malang; the patient demographic and outcome
data were collected from the patient’s medical record as well as the patient status whether
the patient improved or died. The analysis was done using SPSS v. 19, with α = 0.05. OR cannot
be calculated because of the conditional state of dependency that showed with homogenity
OR <0,05.

Results
A total of 69 samples with 56,52% of the subjects were men. Among subjects who improved
and died, no significance of difference between sex and ages. However MPV value was
obtained lower in the group of participants who were better than those who had died, and
the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.007). AUC MPV 0.695 (p = 0.003), with the
optimal cutoff of 10.25 according to Youden Index (J = 0.4451), with sensitivity of 71.4% and
specificity of 73.1%.

Conclusion
The use of MPV values in early sepsis conditions cannot be used to predict mortality.
Laboratory parameters related to routine checks can be studied further.
