Relative value of the pieces:

Pawn = 1

Knight = 3

Bishop = 3.5

Rook = 5

Queen = 9

Evaluating a Position:

1) MATERIAL: relationship between the forces

2) THREATS: Presence of direct threats
3) KING POSITION and King Safety
4) OPEN LINES: possession of
5) PAWN STRUCTURE and weak and strong squares
6) THE CENTRE and Space
7) TIME: Mobility, development and position of the pieces

When in check:

1) Capture
2) Interpose
3) Escape
