Section 1-2: Algebraic Expressions

Vocabulary (pg 12)

variable--a symbol, usually a letter, that represents one or more numbers
algebraic expression--expression that contains one or more variables
also called a variable expression
evaluate--when you substitute numbers for the variables in an expression and
follow the order of operations

Example 1--Evaluating an Algebraic Expression

Evaluate a-2b+ab for a=3 and b=-1

Quick Check 1
Evaluate each expression for x=4 and y= -2

Example 2--Evaluating an Algebraic Expression with Exponents

Quick Check 2
Example 3--The expression -0.3y+61 models the percent of eligible voters who voted in presidential
elections from 1960 to 2000. In the expression, y represents the number of years since 1960. Find the
approximate percent of eligible voters who voted in 1988.

Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

term--a number, variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables
coefficient--numerical factor in a term

like terms--have the same variables raised to the same powers

Example 4--Combining Like Terms

Simplify by combining like terms

Quick Check 4--Simplify by combining like terms

Example 5--Finding Perimeter

Quick Check 6--Find the perimeter of each figure. Simplify the answer.
