After the cleaning process care should be used to ensure proper surface conditions exist t0 obtain relevant results. Ifthe surface is rough and producing false indications that could mask relevant indications, then the surface may be prepared by grinding or machining. Care shall be taken to prevent reduction in base metal beyond that allowable by the referenced code, standard and/or specifications requirement. ‘The temperature of the test surfaces shall not exceed the maximum ‘temperature limit set by the manufacturer of the test medium. If this is Sannin tee Page 3 of 10 CWIG_NDT-P_MT.2 Magnetic Particle Test Procedure GRO ‘unattainable, particles may be used outside the particle manufacturer's recommendations providing the procedure and materials are qualified at the proposed temperature. 4.1.5. Ifnonmagnetic, nonconducting coatings/plating are left on the part in the area being examined it shall be demonstrated that rejectable indications can be detected through the existing maximum coating thickness applied. 4.1.6 If nonmagnetic surface contrast is used, it shall be demonstrated that indications can be detected through the enhancement. Thickness measurements of the surface contrast enhancement are not required, 4.2 Examination Prerequisites 4.2.1 All examinations shall be conducted with sufficient field overlap to assure 100% coverage 4.2.2 Examinations shall be unrestricted by size and/or shape of the ferromagnetic components to be examined, provided the magnetic flux can be verified adequate with a pie gauge and maintained throughout the arca of examination. 4.2.2. At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area. During the second examination, the lines of the magnetic flux shall be approximately perpendicular to those used during the first examination. 4.2.3. Examinations shall be done by the continuous method. The magnetizing current shall remain on while the examination medium is being applied and while any excess of the examination medium is removed. 42.4 The minimum light intensity at the work surface shall be 100 fe (1,076 lx). The light intensity, natural or supplemental white light source, shall be ‘measured with a white light meter prior to the evaluation of indications or a verified light source shall be used. Verification of light sources is required to be demonstrated only one time, documented and maintained on file, Ifa verified light source is used, the verified light source serial number shall be listed on the report. 4.2.5 The maximum leg spacing shall be as follows: * AC-2”to 4” and shall be capable of lifting 10 Ibs. + DC-2" to 4” and shall be capable of lifting 30Ibs. * DC- 4" to 6” Max and shall be capable of lifting 50 Ibs. es Page 4 of 10 CWIG_NDT-P_MT.2 Magnetic Particle Test Procedure ROU “4.2.6 The magnetizing force of yokes shall be verified prior to use each day the yoke is used, or when a yoke has been damaged / repaired. Yearly calibration shall be performed and documented by CWI GROUP LLC. Management. 4.3 Dry Examination Sequence Note: The color of the magnetic particles shall be different than the color of the examination surface. 4.3.1 Before magnetic particle examination is performed, a check of the examination surface shall be conducted to locate any discontinuity surface openings which may not attract and hold magnetic particles because of their width. In addition, dry particles may not be applied to wet/damp surfaces or in excessive wind, 4.3.2. Position the electromagnetic yoke on the surface to be examined and apply the magnetizing current. 43.3. Apply the dry particles using a powder bulb. Apply the particles in a manner that they reach the part surface being magnetized in a light uniform dust-like coating with minimum force. Dry particles shall NOT be applied by pouring, throwing or spreading with the fingers. 4.3.4. Itis essential to carefully observe the formation of indications while the powder is being applied and also while the excess is being removed for broad, fuzzy weakly held powder patterns produced by near surface discontinuities. Remove the excess particles with a light air stream from a bulb or syringe or other source of low pressure dry air while the current remains on. Removal by blowing by mouth is NOT acceptable. Sufficient time for indication formation and examination should be allowed before switching the current off. 4.3.5 Switch off the magnetizing current and evaluate the magnetic particle pattern for discontinuity patterns and note any indications, 4.3.6 Repeat steps 4.3.2 through 4.3.5 with the electromagnetic yoke poles positioned approximately 90° from the original position. 43.7 Evaluate and record the magnetic particle indications on form CWIG_NDT-R_MT in accordance with the predetermined acceptance criteria, Saannnnan End Page 5 of 10 CWIG_NDT-P_MT.2 Magnetic Particle Test Procedure GROUP Magnet ig Field Adequacy 4.4.1. The applied magnetic field shall have sufficient strength to produce satisfactory indications, but shall not be so strong that it causes masking of relevant indications by non-relevant accumulations of magnetic particles. 4.4.2 When it is necessary to verify the direction of the magnetizing field, a pie- shape magnetic field indicator, (example shown in Section 5, Attachment 2 of this procedure) shall be positioned on the surface to be examined, such that the copper-plated side is away from the inspected surface. 4.4.3 A suitable field strength is indicated when a clearly defined line (or lines) of magnetic particles form(s) across the copper face of the indicator, when the magnetic particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force. 4.4.4 When a clearly defined line of particles is not formed, the magnetizing technique shall be changed as needed. 4.5 Evaluation of Indications 4.5.1 Evaluation of indications shall be as follows, unless otherwise specified by the customer’s specifications. 4.5.2 If any indication is suspected to be nonrelevant or false, that area shall be re-cleaned and re-evaluated with the yoke placed approximately perpendicular to the direction of indication to ensure nonrelevant or false indications are not masking relevant indications. Note: The indication of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes it; however, the size of the indication is the basis for acceptance evaluation. 4.5.3 Indications having a length more than 1/16” shall be considered relevant, Alll surfaces to be examined shall be free of: (1) Relevant linear indications (linear indications shall be defined as any indication having a length greater than three times the width); (2) Relevant rounded indications greater than 3/16”. (Rounded indications shall be defined as any circular or elliptical shape with a length equal to or less than three times its width); Sd Page 6 of 10 CWIG_NDT-P_MT.2 Magnetic Particle Test Procedure ROU in a line separated by 1/16” (3) Four or more relevant rounded indicat or less, edge to edge. 4.6 Repair Requirement 4.6.1 Examination of areas from which imperfections have been removed- ‘The rejected indication shall be removed or reduced to an imperfection of acceptable standards, or be blended into the surrounding surface so as to avoid sharp notches, crevices, or comers, where welding is required. After removal of an imperfection, the area shall be cleaned and re-tested prior to welding, 4.6.2, Re-examination of repair areas- After repairs have been made, the repaired area. shall be blended into the surrounding surface so as to avoid sharp notches, crevices, or comers and re-examined by the Magnetic Particle Method of examination that was originally required for the affected area. 4.7 Non-Relevant Indication Evaluation 4.7.1 Any indication which is believed to be non-relevant shall be re-tested and/or checked by other methods to insure that relevant indications have not been masked, 4.8 Demagnetization When required demagnetization will be accomplished by energizing the ‘magnetizing current in contact with the component in the AC mode, then slowly withdrawing the yoke from the test object surface until the yoke is approximately 24 in. away. De-energize the yoke and check the level of residual magnetism with ‘an appropriate magnetic field indicator. 4.9 Calibration of Equipment 4.9.1 The Yoke shall have a minimum lifting power as listed below: * AC-2" to 4” and shall be capable of lifting 10 Ibs. * DC-2” to 4” and shall be capable of lifting 30lbs. © DC- 4” to 6” Max and shall be capable of lifting 50 Ibs. 4.9.2 The lifting power test shall be carried out with weights weighed with a reputable scale and stenciled with the applicable weight before use. a Page 7 of 10 CWIG_NDT-P_MT.2 Magnetic Particle Test Procedure GROW 49.3 The weight shall be re-verified only if it is damaged in a manner that could have caused possible loss of material such as chipping gouging (Loss of material), 4.9.4 ‘The magnetizing force of yokes shall be verified prior to use each day the yoke is used, or when a yoke has been damaged/repaired. Yearly calibration shall be performed and documented, 4.9.3 Visible light meters shall be calibrated once a year or when repaired. Verified light sources shall be checked yearly and each light source shall be permanently marked with a unique identifier. If used, the unique identifier shall be recorded on the report. 4.10 Personnel 4.10.1 NDE Personnel Shall be familiar with this procedure and the applicable referencing code to which they are working. 4.10.2 Only Level II and Level III Personnel shall provide interpretation and evaluation to code criteria. 4.10.3 NDE Personnel shall be qualified and certified in accordance with CWIG_WP.1_Qualification and Certification of Inspection and Test Personnel. 4.10.4 CWI GROUL LLC is responsible to have a copy of each NDE inspector’s certification summary and a current eye exam, as required by ASNT, SNT-TC-1A and shall be filed with permanent examination records, 5.
