This story took place in the past when there were hunters hunting for wolves for their

fur(near the ice age).The main characters are Torak, Wolf, and Renn

The story is about a boy (Torak) whose village was attacked by a demonic bear which
killed Torak’s father. His last words were to tell Torak to go to a mountain which would
help him get away form that bear so that he could be free and live on. Then on his
journey, Torak encounters a friendly wolf cub who also lost his parents and he found
Torak fairly nice so he followed Torak on his journey. Then; all of a sudden Torak gets a
fever and remembers the tips given by his father for what to do when he gets a fever,
but it just kept on making Torak worse. Soon, overnight Torak recovers from his long
and painful fever and sets out to hunt. Later during the hunt, torak finds the same wolf
that hunted Wolf’s whole herd and so they went to hunt him and soon Torak tracked
down the wolf and killed him. Soon after Torak did a ritual his father always did and and
used every little part of that wolf; he used the bone for making fishing hooks, arrow
heads, and needles. He used the liver to carry nuts, his fur to protect him and the rest of
it was for Wolf. Then later while the fat sizzled on the fire for Torak and Wolf Torak
practiced his whistle and to his surprise the wolf reacted. Later that night Torak herd a
stick crack and was snatched away! Right after that, he finds out that the people who
snatched him declared that the wolf that he had hunted down earlier was actually meant
to be those people’s kill. Those people were Renn, Hord and Oslak; some of her clan
mates. Shortly thereafter they introduced themselves the set off to go to their clan;
Windriver. But as soon as they left, Wolf came and tried to take them on but they just
took him with them as well. They walked all day to reach there by nightfall. When they
reached it was not at all like how torak imagined it would be; it was flooding with people,
Some people were drying skins, some were making plates and some were fishing.
Torak then met the leader of that clan; Fin-kennedin. He finds out that these people had
encountered the bear too but had not suffered the same fate. Right after that
Fin-kennedin says that he should kill him! Torak quickly remembered and said that he
has the rights to challenge him to a duel. He accepts Torak’s challenge but sends Hord
to fight him instead because he is closer to Torak’s age. The fight had started and both
of them were armed with spears. They both started fighting and torak did a trick that his
father taught him and unarmed Hord, Hord then unarmed Torak with a different trick and
unarmed Torak! They both were down to their knives and were fighting ferociously
before Torak remembered that he could have water any time but he could not fight Hord
with fire(confusing isn’t it?) so he came up with a perfect plan, steam! He asked to have
a sip of water and Hord followed him, to the river. When Hord was close enough, Torak
poured the broth that was cooking over the fire and it caused a lot of steam so Torak
used that steam to blind Hord and win the match! After he had won the match, Renn
remembered the prophecy of “The Listener”. They all huddled up(everyone except
torak) and told that he might as well be the Listener and decided to keep him for a while.
Once Torak heard about it he declined and said that Fin-kennedin said he would be
allowed to go if he won the match which he did! But then Torak realised that the listener
spoke with silence(his whistle) and fought with air(the steam) so now he has to stay but
he does not know what they will do to him so he just stays put.Torak then sees
Fin-Kedinn getting out of the clan meet and approaches him with the old lady Sauenn
who then tells Torak that he is for sure the Listener. Torak denies it and says that he
cannot be the listener but then saleena tells him his entire story; Two moons after Torak
was born, his mother died. Then his father thought about what every father does when a
child’s mother dies; Smother him. But then he sees a den which he enters and leaves
Torak there for three moons, three moons to learn wolf talk which he now used to talk to
wolf. His father never told him that. Saleena then tells him that his father was actually
the clan mage and had a soul enemy; the wandering man. He was then told that the
bear was created by the wanderer to kill his father… Torak was in a state of shock of
taking all of this in; wolf den, soul enemy, murder of fa… so while Torak was listening to
all of this he had found a flake of flint which he used to free himself while Fin-Kedinn
and Sauenn returned to the clan meeting. He needed a distraction to get a chance to
escape, just then Wolf started yowling: Where are you? Why did you abandon me? So
then Torak made a decision, a decision he didn’t like, he was going to leave Wolf
behind. So when Torak ran, two of the guards had dogs which picked up his scent and
the chase was on. The dogs were picking up his scent by his ropes so he made a quick
decision and threw them away. But still the dogs were on his trail, so he spotted some
wolverine dung which spells so nasty it literally made him gag and his eyes water. So he
put it in his trail and to his surprise, it worked then he had yet another decision to make,
should he go through the graveyard or should he go through the valley? He decided to
go through the graveyard but it turned out to be a trap and just when they were about to
sacrifice him, Torak got pulled into the darkness by his legs and by the time his eyes
adjusted to the light he noticed it was Renn! And once the raven clan had all gone,
Renn handed Torak a bag which had wolf in it! He was so relieved that Wolf was there
but he knew that sooner or later the raven clan would find them and he should just get
going on the journey but then, Renn held a knife at Torak and told him about the clan
meeting and whether she should sacrifice him or no. But Renn knew that if she
sacrificed him, the raven clan would not stand a chance against the bear(The prophecy
indirectly says that the listener has to kill the bear). So when they were on their journey,
Wolf heard two people with canoes riding down the stream and they all ducked. It was
the boar clan and they were helping the raven clan find Torak. Then when they walked
two paces forward, Wolf’s ears got raised and his muzzle was high, but their hopes
werent, and to their dismay,it was the bear. The bear was stronger than ever, he faught
until renn leaped on his back and Torak got overbalanced and fell into the river.torak
woke up to find that he was being carried to the waterfall by unknown people, and when
that happens, he sees two white eyes staring at him from the water, the first peice of the
Nanuak.so Torak goes to grab it and wolf senses that his hand is very powerfull and
once he gets that peice, he shows it to Renn and Wolf. They hoped that no one else
could hear that. Toraak woke up stiff ans sore just to find out that he was in a cave and
Renn was feeding Wolf berries and sees Torak staring at her and feels embarrassed so
she decides to go hunting. But just as she was about to go, Torak said that he was
coming with her. She said that she would agree if he would go back after the first kill
and they agreed and once they got one kill they headed back and had a feast. The next
day, they all headed out from the cave because there was a crap ton of fog. They
thought they saw a deer but it was a log, they thought the saw a man, it was a tree etc.
they soon came across a valley where they got scared when a person (so called the
walker) was telling them to leave and threatened them by throwing Renn’s quiver into a
river and telling them to climb a 85 degrees mountian. They had just reached a ledge
big enough for all of them and that's where they also found a cave where the stone
tooth was kept, the second part of the nanuak. So Renn did some influencing and made
the walker give them back their weapons. So they decided to get into the cave and
retrieve the second piece. They went in but there was only a tiny gap for them to go
past to receive the nanuak. And so, Torak decided that he would go through that gap
and retrieve the nanuak piece. And so saying, Torak went in and found out that the
stone tooth was very powerful made him weak and as he became weak, the ground
beneath him made him sink like quicksand. But just as that happened, Renn saw a hole
in the fog below and saw a rock. At least that's what she thought, but the rock moved
and was coming up the hill! So that's when she realized that the rock wasn't a rock but
the Bear! Renn panicked and told torak that the bear was coming and to hurry up but he
could not as he was being sucked into the ground. So as Torak could not get out to help
them, the bear continued on and eventually climbed up to the cave but only spotted wolf
as renn was hiding and was waiting for torak to come so they could ambush the bear.
Just then, torak slipped free, grabbed the stone and with renn’s help, ambushed the
bear but right after that, Wolf tripped renn, stole her food pouch and ran into the fog.
The bear ran after him and disappeared into the fog as well. No more Bear but also No
more Wolf. One moment the bear was after Renn, and the next after Wolf. Wolf had the
pack with the Nanuak in it. The bear can feel its power. As Wolf runs he no longer feels
like a cub, he is a real wolf. He is in the range of a stranger pack and must be careful.
Torak and Renn decide to build camp and wait till morning to find Wolf. Wolf found a
pack of reindeer that masked his scent. The bear could no longer hunt him; Wolf would
head back to Torak. Renn made a mixture to put over the new Nanuak, to hide it. They
begin to track Wolf, knowing they are also tracking the bear. They found Wolf tired and
wet, but alive with the pouch. Wolf and Torak felt they should travel up the snow
covered side of the mountain,but Renn is afraid of the “ice river” because It’s how her
father died`
Torak’s main conflict is when he is trying to get up the mountains because he has to
survive AGAINST the harsh conditions and the prize was his life.

I can relate to Torak because whenever I get something new then I always have to
make the most of it like Torak did in the book with the wolf he hunted and Wolf. Also
what looks like a beast, need not be a beast. One should always try and see the best
there is in a person and not just judge them by their looks.
Describe the Walker.The walker is a gaurdian of the valley and he doesent want renn or
Torak to come to the valley because he is protecting the valley for his master. Where
does he come from? Why did he tell renn and torak to leave the valley? What opinion
do you have of renn and torak at this point of the story?
