VHF SUMMARY OF CONTROLS AND INDICATIONS

This paragraph shows step by step the indications which will be displayed for each crew
action on the different controls.

VHF TUNING THROUGH THE GUIDANCE PANEL (GP)

The VHF1, VHF2 and VHF3 (optional) are set and tuned by using one of the three sets of
controls located on the Guidance Panel (GP), the Cursor Control Device (CCD) and the
Multifunction Key Board (MKB).
VHF spacing can be set to 25 kHz or to 8.33 kHz.
The easiest and fastest way of tuning the VHF radios is through the Guidance Panel (GP)
VHF knobs. This access is the most appropriate when many frequency changes must be
done in a short period of time.

FIGURE 02-23_1-20-10 - VHF CONTROLS ON THE GUIDANCE PANEL

Each crew member has his own controls: one rotary knob and one swap pushbutton,
dedicated to his respective VHF set. Only the on-side VHF can be tuned by this knob, VHF1
(and VHF3) on LH side, VHF2 (and VHF3) on RH side. The VHF settings appear in the
upper part of the Permanent Radio Bar of the corresponding crew member's Horizontal
Situation Indicator (HSI).

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The MCS 7000 SATCOM system is based on 3 sub-systems:

- The avionics sub-system composed of:
o The Satellite Data Unit (SDU) which controls the whole system,
modulation/demodulation, error correction, channel rate/frequency selection, radio-
frequency.
o The High Power Amplifier (HPA) which provides linear power amplification to boost the
RF signals up to the power level required for transmitting to the satellite.
- The antenna sub-system composed of:
o The antenna which is mechanically steered,
o The antenna driver, located in the baggage compartment. It receives necessary steering
information from the SDU and turns them into commands for antenna motors,
o The Duplexer/Low Noise Amplifier (D/LNA) installed in the fin tip radome which adjusts
the signal between antenna and HPA according to the noise level.
- Cabin sub-system composed of:
o Handsets and fax located in the cabin,
o It is managed by an external Cabin Telephone Unit (CTU) which can be Magnastar
C750, C2000. External CTU is connected to the SDU via a CEPT-E1 bus.
The SATCOM system also interfaces with other airplane components:
- MAU 1 and MAU 2,
- MRC 1,
- IRS 1.
The management of SATCOM is done through the following controllers: MKB, Audio Panel
and soft keys in displays.

Phone memory

The SATCOM and FONE have unique Phone Book pages. The SATCOM Phone Book
page is invoked from the SAT tab using the Phone Memory pushbutton. The Phone Book
function allows entry and retrieval of stored phone numbers.

FIGURE 02-23_3-25-07 - PHONE MEMORY

The ALL priority selection is available to view all numbers simultaneously. The name and
number entry is displayed on two lines. The first line shows the name and Priority, the
second line shows the number. Both lines are highlighted (cyan border) when selected by
the cursor.
The Name field supports the “smart” scrolling capability. That is if an “I” is typed into the
Name field, the list of displayed phone numbers is automatically scroll such that the first
entry whose Name begins with “I” is displayed at the top of the list. If a “P” is then, added
the list automatically scrolls such that any entry starting with “IP” is at the top of the list
and so on.
There are four softkeys buttons on the Phone Book page:
- : Selecting ‘Delete’ removes the number from the phone book database and
the list, and clears the selected number / name fields to dashes. The ‘Delete’
pushbutton then becomes unselectable (grayed-out).
- : Selecting the ‘Apply’ button causes that number to be preset on the SAT tab
and this page to be removed.
- : Selecting the ‘Add’ pushbutton adds the name / number to the phone book.
The displayed portion of the phone book moves to that portion of the phone book,
displaying the new name / number in the context of the listing.
- : If a pilot doesn’t wish to do any action on the page, the ‘Cancel’ button is
utilized. The ‘Cancel’ pushbutton is always selectable when the pilot enters the
Phone Book page.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION DGT97831

The selected Name and Number fields initially default to white dashes. To enter a number
to be stored, a name, number, and priority must be entered via the MKB. If no priority is
entered, the display sends the priority to the database as ALL. This is not a new priority,
but is an indication to Electronic Phone Book (EPB) not to filter phone listings by priority.
Once all data has been entered, the ‘Add’ pushbutton becomes selectable. Selecting
‘Add’ moves the information into the phone memory’s database, and clears the fields and
returns the field to the default state of white dashes. If a name is typed, entered, but
already exists in the phone memory database, when ‘Add’ is selected, a dialog box shall
be invoked asking if the existing number should be overwritten (“Overwrite?” with button
for ‘Yes’ and ‘No’). Selecting ‘Yes’ replaces the name / number. Selecting ‘No’ maintains
the name / number as displayed. If a name or number is not in the phone memory and
the operator does not wish to remain on the page (and utilize other buttons), the operator
uses the ‘Cancel’ pushbutton.
When using the database, once a number has been selected from the list, the number is
displayed in the number field at the top of the window, the associated name is displayed
in the name field, and the ‘Delete’ and ‘Apply’ buttons become selectable. At this point,
the operator can modify the listing by putting the cursor over the desired field and
entering the new value on the MKB. If the operator wants to change the phone number,
the cursor is placed over the Number field and the operator types in the new number on
the MKB.
The EPB is a database file that may contain up to 200 SATCOM phone number entries
and up to 50 FONE phone number entries. The SATCOM phone book and FONE phone
book operate independently, For example, if a number is stored in the SATCOM Phone
Book, the same name/number would have to be stored separately in the FONE phone
book. Only one operator can access the SATCOM Phone Book or FONE Phone Book at
a time.
The EPB can be updated by two methods:
- Pilot entry using the respective Phone Book page
PC-based tool. The PC-based tool is available to develop the phone books off the
aircraft. The SATCOM and FONE phone numbers are loaded as a single database file
using a data loader tool. The EPB is a separately loadable database.

NOTE
The entire number must be entered on the MKB (versus editing the number).
As soon as the operator enters the first digit of the number,
the number field only displays the digits entered (the old number is removed from the display).
