TOTAL NUMBER OF AIRPORTS

One (1) named as Brunei Darussalam International Airport in Bandar Seri Begawan which
accommodates International, Domestic, Military and Private sectors.

TOTAL NUMBER OF HOTELS

There are over 60 Hotels available for tourists to occupy in Bandar Seri Begawan.

AVAILABILITY OF TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS

There are various ways or mode of transportation in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei:

1. Air (Air Transportation)

2. Walking
3. Buses (Provides a cheap and convenient way to get around the city.)
4. Water Taxis (Water taxis line Bandar Seri Begawan’s Waterfront ferrying passengers to
and from Kampong Ayer. The motorised boats carry hundreds of residents every day.
Fares vary depending on the destination.)
5. Taxis (Brunei doesn’t have many taxis. According to locals, only 50 exist in the entire
country! Regardless of the accuracy of this statistic, visitors will undoubtedly face
difficulties finding a taxi.)
6. Private Drivers (The driver picks passengers up from the hotel and collects them later at
a specific time. While this does reduce flexibility, it is among the most convenient and
cheapest ways to get around Bandar Seri Begawan.)
7. Rent a Car (Rentals are affordable while ultra-low fuel prices allow a full tank for a few
Bruneian Dollars.)
5 ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

1. Brunei needs to move away from dependency on oil

The country’s economy that is completely dependent on oil exports has been slowing
lately. Previously, Brunei’s oil exports have been the backbone of the country’s
economy, allowing the government there to provide welfare to their citizens and also
contributing to the country’s high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

2. Unemployment in Brunei rises to 9.3%, higher among men

The latest statistics, which were the findings from the Labour Force Survey 2017, puts
the number of unemployed persons at 19,200, out of which 18,200 are locals. It also
showed that there are more unemployed men than women — at 52.1 percent for males
(10,008 persons) compared to 47.9 percent (9,191 persons) for the opposite sex.
3. Brunei Stoning Punishment for Gay Sex and Adultery Takes Effect Despite International
Outcry
International protest delayed its implementation at the time, but in deciding recently to
put the law into effect, with some revisions, Brunei has stood defiant.

4. European Parliament condemns Brunei over 'retrograde' death penalty for gay sex
The European Parliament on Thursday strongly condemned Brunei for introducing
“retrograde” Islamic laws that punish gay sex and adultery with death by stoning.

5. Airbnb for LGBTQ Travellers boycotts hotels owned by Sultan of Brunei in wake of new
death penalty laws.
A short-term rental company that caters to LGBTQ travellers is calling for a boycott of
hotels around the world owned by the Sultan of Brunei following the introduction of
new laws that make gay sex punishable by stoning to death. Homosexuality has been
illegal in the small Asian nation since it broke from British rule in 1984. But was
punishable by imprisonment alone until a recent shift to a more conservative
interpretation of Islam. Laws that came into effect April 3 make gay sex and adultery
punishable by stoning offenders to death.

5 TREND AND OPPORTUNITIES

1. Brunei prepares for Smart Nation future and digital revolution

Infrastructures improvement, cyber-security, agility and engagement are the four main
approaches in the drive towards preparing Brunei Darussalam as a Smart Nation, to
maximise its digital economy potential

2. Brunei Darussalam long term development plan : Wawasan Brunei

transport and communications acknowledges the progress made in Brunei in the road
and telecommunications sub-sectors, it recognises that the availability and reliability of
public transportation is still unsatisfactory. It is vital that the development of the
transport and communications infrastructure has been elevated as one of the key
thrusts in Brunei’s long-term development plan.

3. Tutong district plan, 2010–2025 = [Pelan daerah Tutong].

Section 13 (“Roads and Transport”) of this resource outlines the key strategies to
integrate and upgrade the road networks and inter-district connections in the Tutong
district in Brunei to meet the future needs of its community.

4. Brunei’s shift towards renewables

The reasons for going the way of renewables are well known; it is environmentally
friendly and according to the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA), it is
fast becoming more cost effective than traditional energy resources.

5. One of Southeast Asia’s smallest countries is diversifying its economy

Long reliant on oil exports for its revenue, Brunei Darussalam is now taking steps to
create a more conducive entrepreneurial environment for local companies to flourish.

TOTAL NUMBER OF AIRPORTS

There are over 235 civil airports located in different parts of China.

TOTAL NUMBER OF HOTELS

According to Trip Advisor, there are over 9,500 hotels that are located in Beijing, China.

AVAILABILITY OF TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS

There are various ways or mode of transportation in Beijing, China:

1. Air (There are two passenger airports in Beijing and the third one will be built in October
2019)
2. Train (It is the center of China’s railway net, which has trains to most of cities of the
country.)
3. Long Distance Bus (There are ten major bus stations in downtown)

4. Subway (22 subway lines (including one airport express line))

5. City Bus (Over 1,200 bus routes are running in Beijing, including regular downtown lines,
suburban lines, night lines and intercity lines.)

6. Taxi (67,000 taxis are in operation in Beijing to serve the public)

7. Bicycle (86,000 public bicycles at the docking stations and 2.35 million dockless sharing
bikes are good supplement to the mass transit of Beijing city buses and subways.)

8. Rickshaw (Rickshaw is a traditional form of transport.)

5 ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

1. Air pollution is killing 1 million people and costing Chinese economy 267 billion yuan a
year, research from CUHK shows
Two pollutants were found to cause an average 1.1 million premature deaths in the
country each year and are destroying 20 million tonnes of rice, wheat, maize and
soybean.

2. The Iconic Chinese animals heading for extinction

Recreational killing, poaching, civil unrest and habitat destruction threaten some of the
country’s most loved creatures.
3. Trade War with United States
China has consistently maintained a major trade imbalance with the United States.
China sells but does not buy. The imbalance grew even more extreme in 2018. This is a
core factor leading to the trade war. This is because the U.S. has shown it will not allow
a major trade deficit to continue with any country. It is therefore clear that the trade
war with the U.S. will not be resolved until the trade deficit issue is resolved. Since such
a resolution does not seem to be imminent, the trade war will likely continue, exerting
great pressure on the Chinese economy.

4. Frozen domestic real estate market.

5. Noise pollution affects a quarter of China’s cities

A quarter of all of China's cities are suffering from excess levels of noise, according to a
new report by leading Chinese environmental authorities.

5 TREND AND OPPORTUNITIES

1. China to have 74 more airports by 2020

China plans to have 74 more civil transport airports to bring the total number in the
country to around 260 by 2020, said the latest report released by civil aviation regulator.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), by then, number of air
passengers in China will grow to 720 million. It means that China will complete its
construction of a traffic network in air in the near future after the convenient high-
speed railway network takes shape.

2. “Made in China 2025”

A deep dive into China’s techno-strategic ambitions for 2025 and beyond.

3. Digital transformation of Small Business in China

In addition to timely delivery, small businesses now have higher requirements for brand,
dealer support in channel activities, new product support, and the frequency of agency
visits.

4. Chinese Platforms go Global

Google and Facebook may be blocked in China (not for lack of trying to get in the market),
but Chinese tech companies have no similar censorship obstacles when it comes to
expanding abroad. Not only is Douyin a top app in China, its international version TikTok
has risen to become one of the most popular new apps globally—the two versions
combined now have 500 million users. Chinese payment methods Alipay and WeChat Pay
continue their expansion into stores across the world, which is only one part of ambitious
global expansion plans underway by both Alibaba and Tencent.

5. The Three-Step Development Strategy

The first period (until 2020) is aimed at comprehensively building a moderately
prosperous society and eliminating poverty. After the second period (2020-2035), China
will basically realize socialist modernization, while by the end of the third period (2035-
2050), China will finally become a leading nation in terms of national power and global
impact.
