Emerging Technologies

One of the emerging technologies people are using to bridge the digital divide is
TV white space (TVWS). Specifically speaking, Africa is most interested in this
technology. TV “white space” is unused television frequencies between 54MHz-
698 MHz. The waves from the “white space” can travel up to about 6 miles which
is perfect for remote villages. Because of the potential positive impact this
technology holds, Microsoft and Google have been really involved in this
technology’s market.

Another emerging technology used to help bridge this gap are Smart phones.
They aren’t entirely new to the scene, but nonetheless have been vital to those
who lack internet access. Leading Tech companies such as Android and Samsung
are constantly coming out with new and upgraded smart phones. These smart
phones slowly are becoming more and more like computers. Thus, these smart
phones are helping people apply to jobs, stay up to date with current events, and
stay connected socially. While not a perfect solution, they help to bridge the
distance. They also are available at a reduced cost when compared to most
computers (depending on the tech company you purchase a smart phone from),
and also save time as they are very convenient and hand held.
