Mikaela Pérez Rosales presents on encouraging organ donation after death in Mexico. There are around 20,000 people waiting for transplants in Mexico, but only about 900 transplants were performed in 2016. Donating organs after death can save up to 11 organs and tissues to help the many people in need of transplants. Registering as an organ donor with the National Transplant Center or encouraging family members to do so could help the thousands waiting and give others a second chance at life.

Title: Organ Donation after Death Should be encouraged
Good afternoon everyone, I am here today to talk about second chances. Organ donation is still a taboo subject in Mexico, what many people do not know is that you do not have to be death to be a donor. You can donate 4 different organs or parts of them while you are alive, including bone marrow and one kidney. But when you are death the number of organs and tissues that can be donated increases up to 11, which include heart, lungs and skin. According to the National Center of Transplants in Mexico (CENATRA), there are around 20 thousand people waiting for a transplant, and in 2016 there has been around 9 hundred transplants made. The number of people waiting might seem small, but the perspective changes for someone that is in the last spots of that list. The transplant process can take from 2 years until much more, it all depends on the type of transplant, condition of the patient and the donor. Let us change the perspective a little bit, in the United States one person is added to the transplant list every 10 minutes, this means that there is a big chance that us or at least someone we know is going to be in that list in the future, if that happens would you prefer to have to wait until it might be too late, or would you rather have an answer as fast as you can? When you donate an organ you can give a child a new hope, a parent an opportunity to watch their kids grow or anyone the chance to archive their dreams. To make a change all we have to do is join and encourage organ donation in Mexico, you can register as a donor in the National Center of Transplants, the Red Cross or just making sure your family knows you want to be a donor; because with just one person becoming a donor, up to 50 others can have a second chance.
