Media:
Media are the collectively communication outlets or tools used to store
and deliver information or data. It is either associated with communication media or
the specialized mass media such as print media, press advertising, photography,
publishing.
Democracy:
A system of government by the whole population or all the
eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
Media Democracy
Media democracy is a group of ideas that believes
in reforming mass media by means such as improving public service broadcasting,
participating in various forms of media and journalism offering various platforms for
public discussion and expression of opinions.
Introduction
The media is a lifeline of a nation. It provides not only information on what
may affect the normal human being is his day to day functioning, but also by
other features keeps him informed of developments national and
international.
It plays a significant role in our society in the present scenario. It is all around
us from the shows from we watch on television, the music we listen to on the
radio to the books and magazines we read each day. Television more than
any of the other medias, achieves different goals.
Democracy is a form of government of the people for the people and by the
people where people elects their representatives.
Public opinion is an important aspect, people in turn could hold the
government accountable and change it, if they knew what is was doing.
Role of Media
1. As an Informer
It supplies the information in true and unbiased form and let the public choose,
what may be the best in their interest. It is the only media who reminds the
politicians about their unfulfilled promises at the time of elections. The excessive
coverage TV news channels during elections helps people illiterates in electing
the right person to the power. This reminder compels politicians to be perform
their promises in order to remain in power.
2. As creator of Public
Opinion
In an uneducated democracy, Public opinion has to be generated and same
agency is required to do work. An instrument of mass communication can
serve the requirement of effective mobilization of national opinion. This is the
only way democracy can survive. Television and radio have made a
significant achievement in educating rural illiterate masses in making them
aware of all the events in their language.
3. As a detective
The role of media as a detective is a critical adjunct to the role of the
press as public watch dog; It is dealt with separately here to emphasize
the difference between reporting on public affairs and journalistic
investigations into doing in the administration of public affairs. When
journalists are well trained and have trusted sources of information, the
press is able to investigate wrong doing by public officials.
Media as fourth pillar
Media has four basic responsibilities as a fourth pillar of democracy.
It should tell the truth.
It should be unbiased.
It should not act to spread propaganda.
Moral conditioning of mass.
Conclusion
No one is perfect in this world and so the media. We cannot think of a
democracy without active and neutral media . From being just an
informer , it has become an integral part of our daily lives. With the
passage of time, media has become a more mature and a responsible
entity which informs people about all the things which is going on in
society.
