Name of Experiment: FM SIGNAL DEMODULATION USING RADIO RECEIVER.

Theory:

FM SIGNAL DEMODULATION

A circuit is required to demodulate a frequency modulated signal that provides the

output with a voltage proportional to the frequency deviation of the input modulated
signal. The ideal characteristic of the demodulator is a straight line, so, al- though
characteristics like the one of are actually sufficient and these show a linear behavior
only for a particular range of frequencies (range of use of the demodulator).

Apparatus:
1. MCM24/EV
2. MCM25/EV
3. PSLC/EV
4. Digital Storage Oscilloscope
5. BNC-BNC coaxial cable & Connecting Ware

Working Procedure:

The following sections are used:-

 ANTENNA / CABLE, as signal input

 RF FILTER, as input band filters
 VCA, as RF amplifier with voltage controllable gain
 RF MIXER 1, as mixer from RF to IF1
 10.7-MHz IF FILTER, as IF filter at 10.7 MHz
 LOCAL OSCILLATOR 1, as local oscillator used to provide LO1 to the mixer
 IF AMPLIFIER / FM DEMODULATOR, as amplitude detector and
demodulator of the converted IF signal
 AGC / LEVEL METER, as voltage control of the VCA gain
 AUDIO FILTER & PREAMPLIFIER, as output filter and pre amplifier
 POWER AMPLIFIER, as power amplifier complete with loud- speaker

Set switch SW1 of the ANTENNA / CABLE section to CABLE

In the RF FILTER section, set switch SW2 to FILTER and SW3 to 1.5 MHz
Set switch SW4 of the 10.7 MHz IF FILTER section to CERAMIC
Set switch SW7 of the IF AMPLIFIER / FM DEMODULATOR section to FM/SSB
In the AGC / LEVEL METER section:-

 Set Switch SW6 OFF to disconnect the automatic control: in this mode the
AGC signal control is adjusted continuously with the DC SOURCE trimmer
of the same section
 Turn the DC SOURCE trimmer completely counter-clockwise to obtain the
minimum gain of the voltage controlled amplifier
 Set switch SW8 to FM and SW10 to PLL
 Connect an amplitude modulated signal to the CABLE IN with the
following characteristics in TP2 (it is possible to use an external
generator or module mod.MCM24
 Connect the oscilloscope to TP2 and check the signal amplitude
 With the oscilloscope check that the amplitude of the signal is 2Vpp at the
FM AUDIO OUT output and that the frequency is the same of the modulator
(1 kHz): in these conditions the amplitude of the de- modulated signal
must be proportional to the amplitude of the modulated signal
