IN ENERGY AWARDS

Returning for its second edition, EGYPS HSE Excellence in Energy Awards is looking to recognise outstanding
and impactful HSE projects, as well as exceptional individuals working within the Egypt, North Africa and/or the
Mediterranean energy sector.

The Awards are open to national and international oil and gas companies, EPC contractors, service providers, OEMs,
technology and solution providers or any other companies that have had a significant impact in the HSE field in Egypt,
Africa and/or the Mediterranean.

The EGYPS HSE Excellence in Energy Awards are led by a high-level Regional Select Jury that will review and grade
all entries through an unbiased two-stage evaluation process. After the first round of online evaluations, the Jury will
select six shortlisted entries for each category that will be invited for face-to-face interviews. After the interviews are
completed, the Jury will make the final round of evaluations to select finalists and winners for each category.

BEST HEALTH AND SAFETY PROJECT
OF THE YEAR
This category is looking to recognise the best health and safety project of the year that has had a
substantial impact in Egypt, North Africa and/or the Mediterranean.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• Nominations to be submitted by a company
representative
• Any company can submit multiple entries
• This is a yearly award, so the submitted project must
have been completed within 2018-2019
• The Jury will only consider projects that have already
been completed (i.e. not ideas or suggestions)
• All entries should be submitted in written English. Any
entry submitted in a different language will not be
considered
• Please do not submit the same entry more than once.
If an entry is submitted multiple times, the most recent
entry will be considered with previous entries being
deleted

EVALUATION CRITERIA
• Measureable impact (50%)
Please explain what health and safety impact your
project has had. For example, reduced number of
safety related incidents, achieving zero fatality, reduced
number of dangerous man-hours etc. Try to quantify
the impact as much as possible, the more numbers you
include the better. Also, make sure the information
provided clearly explains the situation before and after
project implementation. Please note that improved
financial indicators (e.g. reduced costs) are secondary
here, although you are of course welcome to include
them too.
• Quality of the delivery (20%)
Was the project completed on time and within budget?
Did the project deliverables match or exceed the initial
objectives? Please describe the challenges that were
faced and how they were dealt with. What lessons were
learned to improve the management of future projects?
• Innovation (20%)
Your entry should explain why their project is original
and innovative. For example, implemented technology
has never been used for HSE purposes previously or it is
the first time this kind of project has been implemented in
the country/region/globally.

This category is looking to recognise an HSE employee who with a help of innovative approaches has
demonstrated outstanding achievements within the HSE field, has exemplary leadership skills and serves as
a role model for their peers and colleagues.

• Nominations can be made by the individual directly
• Colleagues and peers can also nominate individuals
• More than one employee from the same company can
be nominated
• This is a yearly award, so the submitted information
must display achievements from 2018-2019
• All entries should be submitted in written English. Any

EVALUATION CRITERIA
• Role model and commitment towards
promoting safety culture (30%)
The individual has provided an example to peers or
colleagues on the importance of the role of HSE in
an organisation and the standards expected of HSE
professionals He/she has been actively promoting
safety culture, rewarding safe behaviour and has been
unwilling to compromise on safety
• Leadership skills and proactiveness (30%)
The individual has demonstrated initiative, effective HSE
management strategies and exemplary leadership skills
in working with teams and people. The individual is
intrinsically motivated, cares about the workers, looks to
eliminate causes of problems and does not encourage
the “blame culture”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who can submit entries for the HSE Excellence in Energy
Awards?
Entries can be submitted by individuals from companies within the energy
sector that have had an HSE related footprint in Egypt, North Africa, and/
or the Mediterranean regions.
We are a technology company working in the energy sector,
can we submit an entry?
Yes, you are welcome to submit, as long as your project is relevant to the
HSE, and has impacted Egypt, Africa and/or the Mediterranean regions.
Can one person or one company submit more than one entry?
Yes, multiple entries are permitted, however, please do not submit entry for
the same project/individual more than once. If the same entry is submitted
multiple times, the most recent entry will be considered with previous entries
being deleted.
For the HSE Leader of the Year category, can I submit an entry
myself or does my company have to nominate me?
Entries can be submitted by the individual directly or by the company’s
corporate communications team.
If more than one company are working together on the same
HSE project, can they submit separate entries?
No, there should be one entry per project only. The companies should
decide between themselves who should submit the entry. If multiple entries
from different companies are received, the Jury will decide which entry will
remain and which one will be discarded.
Can multiple people submit entries for the same HSE project?
No, there should be one entry per project only. The team should decide
between themselves who will submit the entry. Alternatively, the entry
can be submitted by a representative from the corporate communications
department.
Are corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives relevant to
the HSE Excellence in Energy Awards?
Corporate social responsibility is a very vast term, which may include
initiatives such as volunteering, philanthropy, ethical labour practises, as
well as environmental efforts. While the former three examples are not
relevant to the HSE, the latter one certainly is. If you believe that your
company’s CSR initiatives are relevant to the HSE, you are welcome to
submit your entry.
We are an international company and we had a very successful
HSE project in the US, can we submit an entry?
If your project has also had an impact in Egypt, North Africa or the
Mediterranean, you are welcome to submit the entry. However, if the
impact affected operations in the US only, then it is not relevant.
Can Regional Select Jury members submit entries for the HSE
Excellence in Energy Awards?
To ensure utmost transparency, the Jury members are not allowed to submit
awards entries.
Which countries fall within North Africa and the Mediterranean?
Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France,
Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco,
Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, and Western Sahara.
How can I submit the awards entry?

What information is mandatory for the awards entry
submissions?
If you are submitting your entry for one of the project categories, you must
download and fill in the PowerPoint template available on our website, and
address al the evaluation criteria. Please note that your presentation cannot
be longer than 20 slides.
If you are submitting for the HSE Leader category, you must provide an up
to 1,000 words cover letter.
Why is there a dateline on the supporting evidence? Why can I
not submit evidence from three years ago?
The HSE in Energy Awards is an annual event, and therefore, recognises
achievements on an annual basis. Additionally, as the energy sector is
rapidly evolving and emphasising on innovation and transformation,
employees must adapt to it and hone their skills continuously. Whilst there
are many subjective nuances, there is a high probability that what may have
been valid and relevant a few years ago, may not be as important today.
I forgot to include an attachment to my entry, what should I do?
If you have submitted an entry and forgot to include an attachment or would
like to request some minor edits, please email us on
egyps.hseawards@dmgevents.com with the request. If you would like to
make a major edit and/or amend more than 50% of the entry, please
resubmit a new entry. We will automatically delete the old one.
On what instance may an award entry be disqualified?
Awards entry will be automatically disqualified due to the following
reasons:
• PowerPoint presentation submitted is longer than 20 slides
• CV is submitted instead of the cover letter
• Failure to provide mandatory documents with your submission
• Incorrect or falsified information submitted
What criteria are used to evaluate the awards entries?
For project categories, the following four criteria are used: measurable
impact, quality of the delivery, innovation and transferability. For the
HSE Leader category, the following four criteria are used: role model
and commitment towards promoting safety culture; leadership skills and
proactiveness; measurable success and achievements; and innovation.
Detailed information on evaluation criteria is available on the website and
in the HSE Excellence in Energy Awards brochure.
How are the entries evaluated and scored?
Entries are evaluated and scored according to the judging criteria outlined
on the website and in the HSE Excellence in Energy Awards brochure.
There is a rigorous evaluation process, where the Regional Select Jury –
comprising of industry leaders – review and grade each entry received
through an online system.
Scores from the online review are then tabulated and the top six entries in
each category are shortlisted for a face-to-face interview with jury members
at the Regional Select Jury Meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday 8
October 2019.
Following the face-to-face interviews, three finalists are shortlisted in each
category. Finalists are announced and informed after the Jury meeting.
The winners are kept confidential are announced at the EGYPS 2020 HSE
Excellence in Energy Awards ceremony on 12 February.
When are the winners announced?
The winners are kept confidential and are only announced at the awards
ceremony that will take place on Wednesday 12 February during the Egypt
Petroleum Show (EGYPS).
