Chaplaincy is happening!
Welcome, behind our backs, out of sight, unnoticed
(by many). It’s exciting, challenging, demanding and it’s
changing lives and communities. You see, whilst less than
5% go to church on a Sunday 100% are in their
communities on Monday, Chaplaincy ministry is an
incarnational ministry, it is called to go where the people
are! Chaplaincy offers a way for the church to respond to a
rapidly changing society. Most people are no longer
members of churches, and these are the people to whom
the church offers its message of hope and new life in Christ.
Chaplains are at the forefront of this mission. Much of their
work is pastoral, offering compassion and a listening ear,
but also affirming and encouraging. We bring experience
and an informed Christian view to the places we visit and
the people we meet.
Stories are powerful vehicles that capture our imagination.
I wish I could share with you all the stories of
transformation, fire office battling depression who
attempted to take his own life, but following a meeting
with his chaplain and encountering Christ he and his wife
were baptised on Easter Sunday or a hospital chaplain
being asked to pray with a senior Iraqi government minister.
We later discovered that members of his family
attended a London church. In every sector from HMP to
hospitals, universities, shopping centers, the aged the
emergency services, chaplains are available for people.

We have grown from small beginnings and now have a
representation across the UK.
We currently have more than 200 chaplains and our numbers
continue to grow as people feel called to this vital ministry.
Chaplain’s Aim
Our aim is to care for people at their point of need, by
communicating the love of Christ in a compassionate and practical
way. Equipped with theological training and pastoral care,
chaplains minister to people in many life-situations and
particularly to those facing deeply distressing situations, enabling
them to better cope with periods of instability.
Chaplain’s Mission
• To Discover: We are committed to discovering future
chaplains from our local churches. We are looking for
people who are passionate about helping those in need
and turning that passion into practice.
• To Develop: We are committed to develop and train
prospective chaplains, providing them with the necessary
confidence and competence skills they need. We offer an
excellent ‘Introduction to Chaplaincy’ conference and a
‘Chaplains Conference’ each year. We have recently
teamed up with Regents Theological College to offer a
MA in Applied Theology with Chaplaincy Specialism and
Mattersey Hall also offers bespoke Chaplaincy training.
• To Deploy: We are committed to deploying chaplains in to
the community. This may be voluntary or paid, either full
or part-time. We are building links with like-minded
organisations to expand deployment opportunities.
Chaplains Who?
Chaplains are men and women of all ages who are trained to offer
care and support, regardless of race, gender or culture. They do
not impose their own spiritual values on others, instead they allow
people to explore and examine their own beliefs and meaning
of life. Some chaplains are required to be recognised Pastors but
many are trained lay people.
Chaplains Are
Chaplains are present and good listeners, provide a safe
environment for people to share their feelings, they help people
work through life issues and assist in times of crisis. They are;
• Pastors: they need to be able to listen, care, empathise,
understand, and be available to those in need.
• Interpreters: they try to identify, understand and share in
issues affecting the culture of a particular context and
what God is doing there and to help the people there to
understand God. This means winning the right to be
heard.
• Ambassadors: they represent the Church, and they also
report back to the Church about the new insights they
have gained.
• Pray-ers: they pray for the places where they work and
when it is appropriate they pray with people.
• Connectors: they connect their faith with their context
by being chaplains to all and demonstrate gospel values
such as compassion and concern for social justice.
• Guests: in the contexts they serve, but often work by
acting as hosts crossing bridges to provide hospitality,
welcome and interaction with others.
Chaplains Where?
The opportunities for chaplaincy are as diverse as the
communities we serve. Chaplains serve in the following
areas: (not comprehensive) Sport clubs, Hospitals, Aged Homes,
Prisons, Universities / Colleges, Schools, Police, Fire and Rescue,
Ambulance Service, Military, Detached youth work, Shopping
Centres and Airports.
Did you know that Association Chaplains serve in key
roles and a number of them are Team Leaders in a
variety of settings?
These include: West Midland Police, various hospitals,
various prisons, National Fire and Rescue Service, various Sports
Clubs, East Midlands Airport, Port of Aberdeen and so much
more!
Exciting Times: This is an exciting time to be thinking about
chaplaincy; opportunities abound and fresh thinking and
creativity is leading people to become involved in all kinds of
places. An Elim Pastor recently told us that he is the official
chaplain of a hells angels group on south coast!
It is encouraging to know the Association Ministers are accepted
in the NHS, HMP and the Military as chaplains. There are growing
numbers of part and full time Chaplaincy positions available in
these sectors. We believe Chaplaincy ministry offers a meaningful
and fulfilling opportunity for ministers and non-clergy with the
right experience.
