ALPHA CHI OMEGA presents

R U N WAY WA R R I O R S :
reflect
October 26, 2019
8-10 PM
Welcome
We want to thank all of you for coming out tonight to show support and help us
raise awareness for domestic violence. Runway Warriors started as a means of
empowerment, and we hope that our current vision and work continues to support
those in the journey of overcoming domestic violence.

The theme Reflect is meant to invite participants to reflect on their own experiences
as well as come into contact with realities that do not necessarily align with your
own. We invite participants to watch and listen to our speakers, performers and
models and reflect on how the stories they tell relate to or differ from your story.

A mirror can reflect a face, but in the process something is lost. What was once
three-dimensional becomes limited to just two dimensions. During this show you
will catch a glimpse of another person’s life told through dance, song, art, and the
spoken word. Keep in mind that those expressions are deeply personal reflections of
the artists. Like a mirror, we are limited to what we see on stage tonight to
understand the artist and their performance may not reflect their story in its
entirety. That being said, I invite you all to use tonight’s show as an opportunity to
reflect on their own experiences as well as come into contact with realities that do
not necessarily align with your own.

Putting on a show like Runway is a difficult task, but as members of a sorority that is
both dedicated to its philanthropy and to empowering women, we believe that it was
incredibly important to put together an accessible and inclusive event that sheds
light on such a pervasive issue.

Thank you to all the sisters, models, friends, and of course, our wonderful sponsors,
who made it all possible. We couldn’t have done it without your help.

And again, thank you for attending!

Benefactors
Joyful Heart began as a dream to help
survivors heal in mind, body, and
spirit. It has grown into a national
organization determined to transform
the way society thinks about and responds to sexual assault, domestic
violence, and child abuse—while always keeping joy and survivors’ healing at
the core of its work.

Joyful Heart is paving the way for innovative approaches to treating trauma;
igniting shifts in the way the public views and responds to sexual assault,
domestic violence, and child abuse; and reforming and advancing policies and
legislation to ensure access to justice for survivors.

The vision of the Joyful Heart Foundation is a world free of sexual assault,
domestic violence, and child abuse.

Our mission is to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic

violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence
forever.

We deliver our mission through a program portfolio that includes three

integrated areas: Healing, Education, and Advocacy.

While we understand that our vision may not be achievable in our lifetimes,
we firmly believe that violence and abuse are preventable.

In support of our vision and mission, we have developed and adopted a set of
values and guiding principles that inform and inspire our approach to all that
we do.
The New York Asian Women's Center has transformed.
In January 2017, we changed our name. And, we are strengthening our focus on
advocacy and policy work, alongside our direct service provision.

Though our plans to expand our advocacy efforts were initiated before the
presidential election, advocacy takes on greater urgency and carries more
profound, life-changing implications. The survivors we serve, along with their
communities, are frightened because of immigration concerns, hate crimes, the
potential of widening gaps in the social welfare safety net, loss of health
insurance, and the decline of affordable housing, among other concerns.

Survivors of violence may be re-traumatized by these heart-stopping fears and

may be especially vulnerable. But their safety and security remains paramount
to our work.

Now is the time to donate generously. To those who have given, thank you. To
those who have yet to give, support survivors of violence by helping us facilitate
and strengthen their unified voice. Assist us in providing legal immigration,
employment and housing services. And, join us in assisting their children - who
may be in even more danger.

So even though we have changed our name, our mission, our heart remains the
same.

Sanctuary for Families is New York’s leading service provider and advocate for
survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence.
Every year, we empower thousands of adults and children to move from fear and
abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a range of comprehensive
services and advocacy.

Our first office housed five employees at a church parish house in midtown
Manhattan. By 1985, we were providing shelter to 35 women and children each night,
and operating a daycare program.

Guided by the needs of the survivors we serve, in the years that followed we
launched the Legal Center, programming for children, and the Sarah Burke House
Transitional Shelter. We also expanded our mission to meet the needs of survivors of
sex trafficking, female genital mutilation, and related forms of gender violence.

Today, Sanctuary for Families employs nearly 200 lawyers, clinicians and support
staff, and operates out of 20 locations throughout New York City. Together, we make a
difference for over 15,000 adults and children every year, and tirelessly advocate for
an end to gender violence.
