During the early years of Spanish colonization, education was mostly run by the church. Spaniards
friars and missionaries educated the natives and converted indigenous populations to the Catholic
faith.
They established schools that taught us catechism, liturgical music, industrial and technological
techniques and of course, how to read and write.
Years after (1593), Baybayin script was later replaced by Latin script.
Tertiary schools was founded that mainly taught medicine and science courses.
In 1863, Free access to modern public education started that provided a complete educational
system consisting primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
Atleast two free primary schools was established, one for boys and one for girls under the
responsibility of municipal government.
Filipinos became well educated and our education became higher than any other countries.
