In my research essay I will be exploring the impact of Chinese business on America,

especially economically. I will be looking into specifics like how deals between private

American businesses with China impacts Americans. I will also evaluate how government

regulated trade with other nations impacts America. Through this essay I will try to discover to

what extent Chinese businesses effect the American life. It is known that we do business with

foreign, but to what extent these foreign nations get to influence America isn’t common

knowledge. I aim to uncover just how influential foreign nations, specifically China, are

economically.

American Factory. Directed by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, Higher Grounds Production,

2019.

American Factory is a documentary directed by well-respected documentary film maker Julia

Reichart alongside Steve Bognar that aims to show the relationship between a Chinese company

with American workers. The documentary shows how a Chinese company, Fuyao, must adapt

when it opens a facility in Moraine County of Ohio. The documentary details on how American

workers hold very different values than Chinese workers and as a result there is a lot of learning

to be done on both ends.

Gould 1

The purpose of this documentary is to provide people with multiple perspectives. The film is

aimed for all Americans to look at and gain an understanding. The documentary is meant to help

Americans sympathize with both the Chinese and the working-class Americans as it sheds light

on both group’s views. This film was made in the context of Trump having a trade war with

China and overall there being a great deal of hostility towards Chinese in the ways of economics.

The documentarians are credible because they have a great deal of experience. Julia Reichart is

well known and established. It is easy to see the source is reliable because it has first-hand

footage of all parties throughout the process of the new branch of Fuyao opening. Additionally,

this is a very recent documentary, it came out just this year.

This source is extremely relevant to my paper because it shows me how an outside nation

(China) influences domestic economics. The company came over to America and employed a

great deal of people who were otherwise jobless. There are other effects from the China that can

be used in the paper such as Chinese people moving to America or different worker’s rights.

In “Caught between Superpowers: Alaska’s Economic Relationship with China”, Sam Karson

evaluates how business between states and foreign countries can be a conflict of interest for the

state and the rest of the U.S. The article says that Alaska must be prepared to protect itself from

the U.S. preventing its economic dealings with China.

The author’s purpose in writing this piece is to make people aware of the fact that there can be a

conflict of interest between states and the U.S. when foreign nations are involved in American

economics. The audience is the general American public, trying to make them aware that states

have rights to in order to protect their citizens. Once again, this source was written in the context

of America being at a crossroads with China.

The author is a law student at Duke and had a lot of assistance from the Alaskan Law Review.

All of this supports the claim that the source is credible. The article was written in May of 2019,

so it is incredibly relevant as well.

This source provides another example for me to use on how a China’s business with the U.S. is

impactful. In this case the Chinese business causes potential friction between the state and the

country. The article will be used as an example of how Chinese business can cause trouble

among different domestic entities.

Kennedy, Merrit. “Back From China, LeBron James Speaks Out On NBA Controversy.” NPR,

NPR, 15 Oct. 2019, www.npr.org/2019/10/15/770305688/back-from-china-lebron-james-

speaks-out-on-nba-controversy.

In Merrit Kennedy’s “Back From China, LeBron James Speaks Out On NBA Controversy”, the

results of a comment made by an NBA employee on the Hong Kong conflict are discussed. The

article specifically addresses what LeBron James had to say on the subject matter.

The author’s purpose is to show people how other employees of the NBA are responding to

General Manager, Daryl Morey’s tweet about Hong Kong. The audience is meant to be for those

who have been following the Hong Kong conflict. The piece was written in the context of Hong
Gould 1

Kong being in turmoil as people continue to protest the government over there. Daryl Morey

chided Hong Kong and as a result has faced criticism from his peers for “speaking out”.

Merrrit Kennedy has written for NPR for a long time now and has a lot of education on both

international relations and international human rights, making her very qualified to write this

article. The article was also written just a couple of weeks ago and is extremely relevant.

This article will be used in the paper to demonstrate how Chinese business can even affect free

speech in America. China does a lot of business with the NBA and that is why when Morey

spoke against China in his tweet he was chided by his peers. The fact that China was in business

with the NBA meant that many of the NBA players backed up China regardless.

Schweizer, Peter. Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and

Enriches Family and Friends. Harper, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2019.

Peter Schweizer uses his book, Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides

Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends, to expose how politicians abuse power to benefit

themselves or loved ones. The book takes an in depth look at how foreign countries will make

business deals with American businesses in return for “favors” of sorts. The book is meant to

share how there is much more going on among our political leaders and foreign countries for

personal gains.

The purpose of this book is very clear, expose corruption. The audience once again is the general

American public, aiming to make them aware of what happens behind closed doors in

government. The piece was written during and after the election of Donald Trump. It works to

show how both the Republican and Democratic sides make crooked deals with foreign countries.
Gould 1

Peter Schweizer is a well-known author that has written many political books, especially on

corruption. He has several awards for covering different material. His research has been featured

from 60 Minutes to The Washington Post. The fact that the author is well established and that the

book was written very recently makes this a great source.

China’s dealings with Biden and several others is discussed in this book. The book

provides information on how politics in tandem with business is affected by China, it will be

used extensively in the paper to show correlation business and politics when it comes to Chinese

influence.

Swanson, Ana, and Keith Bradsher. “What's Really in the Trade Deal Trump Announced with

China.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 15 Oct. 2019,

www.nytimes.com/2019/10/15/business/economy/china-trade-

deal.html?searchResultPosition=2.

The article, “What’s Really in the Trade Deal Trump Announced with China”, by Ana

Swanson and Keith Bradsher breaks down the trade deal Trump made with China. It goes step by

step describing what will happen with tariffs to how security will be affected.

The authors’ purpose in writing this article is to make the trade deal better understood and

concise for an everyday person. The audience is certainly those who are interested in foreign

affairs/politics. It is meant to make things simpler for someone who wants an idea of what the

trade deal is. It is written in the context of the current “trade war”.

Ana Swanson is a NYT’s writer that specializes in economics. The other author, Keith

Bradsher, reopened the NYT bureau in Shang-hai so he has first-hand experience in China.
Gould 1

Bradsher is also the winner of a Pulitzer Prize, showing how he is a qualified reporter. The

article was also written just a couple of weeks ago, making it extremely relevant.

This article provides a lot of statistics and basic information that can act as evidence in my

paper. The data in the article can provide information as to what the trade war is and how it

effects both American economics and American security.

“Trump's Trade War.” PBS, Public Broadcasting Service,

www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/trumps-trade-war/.

This Frontline report from PBS goes in depth on Trump’s trade war, talking on subjects

such as the tariffs and their effects domestically. The report goes into how the tariffs may “level”

the playing field for American business, but at the same time raise prices for American

consumers.

The purpose PBS had in creating this report was to educate the American public on how

the actions taken by the government in relation to Chinese business effects the American people.

This piece was created in the context of a turning point between American Chinese relations in

hopes to keep people aware of how their lives would be affected.

There are no writers, simply reporters for this source. The information comes from PBS

which is a notoriously reliable and relatively unbiased source. Additionally, this information was

put forth this year making it extremely relevant.

This report from PBS will give concrete examples of businesses in America that have been

affected by American business. It will give a lot of detail to support the impacts China has on
Gould 1

American economy. This source will act as evidence of China’s influence on prices in my

research paper.

UCIU, TITUS, and ANA-MARIA GERMAN. “The Economic and Social Polarization in the

Actual Period of Globalization.” Journal of Academic Research in Economics, vol. 10,

no. 3, Dec. 2018, pp. 429–444. EBSCOhost,

search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=134240977&site=ehost-live.

“The Economic and Social Polarization in the Actual Period of Globalization”, written by

Titus Suciu and Ana-Maria German discusses how gloablization has polarized the world.

Specifically, it discusses how businesses and governments put aside the needs of the poor in their

economics and as a result the poverty is even worse.

The writers’ purpose of writing this article is to shed light on the detrimental effects

globalization has on the impoverished. The intended audience is once more the general public,

hoping to bring awareness to an issue and evoke change.

The writers are two Romanian from Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania. They are

well educated and seem to be qualified to write the paper. They also cite a great deal of sources

to back up their writing. The article is recent, written not even a year ago proving to be relevant.

The information in this article will be used to show how other nations are affected by

outside business and economics. This article will also provide more detail on how foreign

business polarizes a country economically. Overall this source will act as something that can be

compared to the U.S.
