1. SCOPE
This instruction defines the preparation of Methyl-Camphor-Methyl Salicylate Chest Rub Ointment
2. CHEMICAL MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT
a. Menthol h. Evaporating dish
b. Camphor i. Watch glass
c. Eucalyptus oil j. Test tube
d. Turpentine oil k. Spatula
e. Methyl salicylate l. Mortar and Pestle
f. Paraffin
g. Petroleum
3. INSTRUCTION
a. Weigh the following ingredients: Menthol, Camphor, Paraffin, Petroleum Jelly, Turpentine
oil, Methyl salicylate
b. Combine petroleum jelly and paraffin in an evaporating dish. Melt over steam bath at 75 C
c. Triturate menthol and camphor crystals in mortar and a very fine, impalpable powder. Add
these to the melted white ointment base. Stir to blend.
d. Remove from heat and set aside
e. In a test tube, combine turpentine oil and methyl salicylate. Incorporate this to the bulk
mixture
f. Transfer bulk mixture into a mortar and triturate until a smooth, unctuous mass is
produced.
