On October 25th, 2019 North Bay Produce, Inc. voluntarily recalled certain varieties of fresh
apples packed and shipped from one packing shed between October 16th-October 21st due to the
potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious
and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with
weakened immune systems. The recall was initiated as a result of product testing which revealed
that finished products contained the bacteria. We hope that the information below answers
commonly asked questions about this recall. Consumers with additional questions may also call

North Bay Produce, Inc. is recalling fresh bagged and individually sold apples which were
packed and shipped between October 16th, 2019 and October 21st, 2019 to customers in Florida,
Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin. Apples available
at retail before October 16 are not affected by this recall, and no other North Bay Produce
products are affected by this recall.
If you have the recalled product, do not consume it. Please discard immediately or return to the
place of purchase.
North Bay Produce, Inc. is recalling certain varieties of fresh apples due to the potential to be
contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was initiated as a result of product testing,
which revealed that finished products contained the bacteria. The implicated apple varieties
include McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Jonathan, Fuji, Jonamac and Red Delicious apples that can be
identified in plastic bags by the following brands; Great Lakes, North Bay Produce Pure
Michigan, clear plastic tote bags, white paper tote bags and apples that were individually tray
packed at one of its facilities. The recalled apples were shipped to retailers, brokers and
wholesalers in Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas and
Wisconsin.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterial pathogen which can cause serious and sometimes fatal
infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
It is a naturally occurring bacterium that can be found in soil and water. Additional information

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in
young children, frail, or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although
healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache,
stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and
stillbirths among pregnant women.
No. At this time, we are not aware of any illnesses attributed to this recall .
Although adequate cooking inactivates Listeria monocytogenes, you should NOT consume the
recalled product even if cooking it first. Please discard the implicated product.
If you have consumed the recalled product you should contact your healthcare provider to
address any health concerns.
North Bay Produce, Inc. immediately stopped production and distribution from the identified
facility. FDA and North Bay Produce, Inc. continue their investigation into what caused the
issue. North Bay Produce, Inc. is investigating where the contamination originated and is
destroying all affected product still in its possession.
North Bay Produce, Inc. is working with the FDA and the supplier to determine the root cause of
contamination. North Bay Produce, Inc. takes food safety seriously and will continue to review
and improve our practices and work with our suppliers to prevent this from happening again.
