S/4 HANA TM 1809 – Whatʼs new?

The new release of SAP Transportation Management 1809 is now generally available on the
market. It’s a full-blown offering at par with TM 9.5, for different market segments.

The immediate questions are what has been added to it since 1709 release? What is of most
value to the TM customers? And what is still missing?

General Benefits of S/4 HANA embedded TM

SAP TM 1809 offers a simplified integration into other S/4 HANA processes based on
harmonized master data and customizing (“single-system integration qualities”)

No Core Interface (CIF) to transfer and convert master data is needed. The TM system
uses business partner and product master data created in S/4 HANA directly.

No replication of dangerous goods, hazardous substances and phrases. SAP TM 1809

accesses Product Safety & Stewardship (PS&S) master data in S/4 HANA directly.

SAP TM 1809 customizing is harmonized with S/4 HANA customizing.

No replication of logistics business documents in inbound and outbound processes.

Transportation demands (Freight Units) are created directly from S/4 HANA sales,
purchase and stock transfer documents.

Embedded analytics functionality is available SAP TM 1809.

SAP TM 1809 integrates into the embedded applications in S/4 HANA and supports
also side-by-side scenarios. This means that it can receive and process transportation
requirements from other ERP or S/4 HANA instances (in addition to the processing of
system internal transportation demand)

The new release has brought us enhancements in planning, charge management and
settlement areas, and most awaited LBN (Logistics Business Network) integration.

Here is a selection of key innovations and enhancements in 1809 release:

Following features which have been supported through the TM Collaboration Portal are not
available in S/4 HANA TM 1809 via other means.

Self-Billing Freight Order

The following features which have been supported through the TM Collaboration Portal
need to be still avail via means of EDI or mail communication

1:1 Tendering: RFQ to Service Agent

Peer to Peer Tendering; Broadcast Tendering, Subcontract List

Interface Tendering of Freight Order to Business Partner (for example Descartes)

Transportation Tendering through freight exchange

Rate change request from Carrier (Freight Agreements)

View Freight Agreements

Respond to Request for Quotation (Strategic Freight Procurement)

Award Confirmation from Carrier (FSP)

Carrier Invoice submission (B2B) and Dispute Management on the carrier invoice.

Note - The TM Collaboration Portal is not available in S/4 HANA. It is planned to be

replaced by the planned cloud product Logistics Business Network (LBN has an own road
map for needed functionality)

2.Planning

§ Improvements in Freight Planning with Gantt chart

• Improve planning efficiency with attribute-based planning: Group multiple

transportation demands by selecting specific attributes

• Visualize load planning results with operating times/calendar

• Visualize load planning on package level

• Improvements on usability and visibility

§ New package building process - Mixed pallets with multiple customer orders

A new transportation unit category Package Unit has been introduced. A package unit can
be used to consolidate packages, which means you can transport packages together across
several transportation stages and capacity documents.

• New single document user interface for PU

• New POWL for PU

• Document to keep items on packages together over several stages

• Loaded in container units or trailer units

• Master data is retrieved from the packaging material master

3. Forwarding settlement and charge calculation

Direct posting of the SD billing document from forwarding settlement

document (FSD)without webservice.

Online validations and error handling for posting.

Organization mapping in organization model.

Transportation charges

§ Filtering zero charges: Improved performance during batch processing by excluding “0”
charge items from settlement creation

• During batch processing of FWOs for settlement creation, charge items with zero
amounts are no longer considered

• New invoicing status to identify those orders with zero amount

§ Calculation date and exchange rate date change propagation

• Fixation flag set only at the level where the change was done

• If all charge items have the same manually changed date, then copy the same date to
the root (regardless of the manually-changed date indicator). Otherwise, the date is cleared
at the root

4. S/4 HANA EWM Direct Integration

S/4 HANA EWM 1809 to S/4 HANA TM 1809 system internal integration is done via
A2A services in the same way as cross system communication

5. Supported Integration for 1809

Following deployment or integration options are available to integrate TM with other SAP
applications such as EWM,ERP,GTS etc.

Scenario builder enhancements

• Fiori application to create test data for Transportation Management

• Simplify creation of master data, transnational data and customizing for tests

What’s new:

• Support planning profiles, scheduling settings and optimizer setting

• Support the change / conversion from currencies (e.g. from local currency to EURO) or
de-valuation like from Turkish Lira TRL to TRY

Compared to SAP TM 9.5, the following functions are not yet released in S/4 HANA
TM 1809

Scheduling Agreements integrated

Integration of Forwarding Order/ Settlement Document with S/4HANA Credit

Management

Group Logistics is only supported for side-by-side scenarios, but not yet for system
internal processing

Internal Settlement Management (including Internal Settlement for Resources)

Business Partner hierarchy

The usage of Package Building functions for Freight Order and Transportation Unit is
not released for S/4 HANA TM 1809 until further notice

Integration into Customer Relationship Management (discontinued for S/4 HANA road
map)

Integration of TM Resources to Enterprise Asset Management Objects (discontinued for

S/4 HANA road map)

Conclusion – The S/4 HANA TM 1809 release looks promising, keeps the SAP’s promise
of innovation and continuous investment in this area.

However, customers/partners are really looking forward to:

- Full fledged alternative to discontinued carrier collaboration portal, It’s the good news
to have LBN with 1809, but still a lot of ground to cover in terms of functionalities

- Coverage of more LSP specific functionalities

- Sales Order Scheduling, Scheduling Agreement integration

- Best Practices content for

- Data Migration

- All major Freight scenarios
