Hydro Ones Distribution Challenges
Very Long Rural / Radial Feeders
 Feeder Protections (increased R/X =
low fault amps) + DG contribution
 Patrol times are significant.
 Feeder transferability – limited by
voltage support.
 True Load on System with DG
Contribution.
Reactive DX Operating
 No Realtime DX operating diagrams
 Smart Meter data not leveraged
 No integration with field tablets and
OMS. Change Control issues arise.

What is a
Distribution Management System?

DISTRIBUTION A decision support system to assist the

MANAGEMENT OGCC and field staff with the monitoring
SYSTEM and control of Hydro Ones Distribution
(DMS) System.

Essentially, it is the brain of our Smart Grid Solution

IT Systems

Integration of enterprise data systems is critical to modernizing

the Distribution System. All information contained within the
DMS is extracted from the corporate enterprise systems.

DMS State Estimation
Load Profiles: The load profiles are created from the
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and MV90 data
that has been collected from HONI smart meters and
Primary Metering Equipment (PME). This data was then
averaged and normalized to create a 24 hour daily load
profile.

Load Transfers with DG

The DMS can easily find the true load of the system when a
feeder has a large amount of DG connected. This is
important for:
- DG Curtailment when
no Transfer Trip is
present (based on TIR
rules)

- Real Time Load

Transfer Restoration
when DG’s have been
removed on Transfer
Trip
Current DMS (3.2) DG Management Application
Future DMS (3.7) DERM Application

Distributed Energy Resources Management application

(DERM) provides real-time monitoring, near-term forecast
and user friendly control of DERs.
The main goal of the DERM is to enhance the capability of
the existing grid to absorb large amounts of distributed
energy assets for meeting regulatory technical constrains.

It does this by:

- Receiving input values (V,P,Q) from Measurements or
- Receives a load profile (P,Q) from historical data

DERM can be viewed at system level, by station, and by

feeder.
DER Device Modelling

ADMS will provide modelling of the following DERs:

- Distributed Generators (Synchronous, PV etc)

- Energy storages
- Electrical vehicle charging stations
- “behind-the-meter” generation units
- Electrical vehicle chargers.
DERM Dashboards
DERM – Calculated Load and Generation
With DERM always calculating the generation on the
system, the true load can also easily be calculated and
displayed, per feeder, for the Operator.

This true load point can also be trended to assist in

restoration and DG Curtailment assessments.
