Honeywell’s Enraf tank farm gateway CIU888 has now released with
enhancements and new capabilities!!

Purpose
To announce release of new and enhanced features of Enraf tank farm gateway CIU 888.

Objective
Enraf tank farm gateway CIU 888 was launched in 2015, and we have had a huge success since its launch. The latest software
release version R103, enables new features in CIU 888 and also enhances some of existing features. These features helps
us to penetrate in to competition installed base, to integration process radars in to Tank inventory system and to bid for the
bigger tank farm automation jobs with lesser hardware footprints.

Description
This release is a software release, where in new software version R103 is released for CIU 888. Below are the highlights of
this release:

1. Modbus input interface (Modbus master) is now available!

• This features helps integration of any Modbus device with CIU 888. For example competition tank gauges on
Modbus protocol can be now directly connected to CIU 888 on RS 232/485 serial bus. Other scenario is to connect
HART transmitters (such as Honeywell Guided Wave Radar) to CIU 888 using a HART to Modbus convertor.
• Maximum 32 devices can be connected to a single Modbus input port of CIU 888 over RS 485 serial bus. However
if the devices are connected through a converter, then the maximum count is 50 devices. In case of RS 232 serial
connection, only one device can be connected.
• Upgrade of install base with new feature - Existing CIU 888 within installed base can be easily upgraded with Modbus
input interface option by installing a RS232/485 communication board (refer part number S088105 from spares price
book). CIU with older software version will be upgraded to version R103 free through a service request generated to
Honeywell TAC support.

2. Maximum number of tanks increased from 50 to 80 tanks

• The CIU 888 can now be offered for bigger sites up to 80 tanks, when CIU is connected to a external Modbus Host
(e.g. DCS/ SCADA etc.).
• Currently this increased capacity of 80 tanks is not available if Entis Pro is used. If the CIU 888 is communicating
directly to any external Modbus Host (example a DCS or a SCADA system) CIU can be used with this enhance tank
capacity. Do let us know if you need 80 tanks connectivity with Entis Pro, so that we can deliver that as a
special.
• Number of straps CIU 888 can handle is now increase to 400,000 with the limit of 5000 straps per tank.

• The number of field communication ports can now be selected on slot 1 till 6 for any of the below communication
- Modbus Input Interface ( Modbus master serial port, slot 1 till 6)
- Bi-Phase Mark (slot 1 till 6)
- GPU input (serial port, slot 1 till 6)

4. Maximum number of serial host ports increased from 4 to 6 #

• Host communication option can now utilize slot 3 till 6. Following host communication option available:
- Modbus output (Modbus Slave serial port slot 3 till 6 and the 2 fixed serial ports)
- CIU Emulation ( Serial host port only on slot 5 & 6 and the 2 fixed serial ports)
#
Note: - CIU 888 has 2 fixed serial ports which are used for only host communication and has 6 optional communication slot,
which can be used for field or host communication.

FAQs

Q – What is the limitation on number of Modbus devices that can be looped in one field port of the CIU?
A – 32 Modbus device can be physically multi-dropped in a RS485 field bus (Modbus RTU). Remember that Overall
limitation on CIU tank license also need to be looked in to when proposing a solution, due to the fact that each tank
can be assigned with only one product level measurement.
Example: Assume CIU has 30 tanks license and this CIU has 1 Modbus field input interface port.
Max no. of Modbus (or other CIU license in Overall Modbus device Remark
protocol) device this example which can be configured
(no. of tanks) in CIU
32 (direct connectivity on RS 30 30
485 bus)
50 (connectivity through a data 30 30
concentrator/ Converter)

Note: Refer documentation of Modbus device also for cabling requirements and limitations if any.

Q – What is the Cable specification for the direct Modbus input interface connectivity?
A – Modbus communication from the field devices are possible through the physical communication layers of RS- 485
or RS 232. Refer the CIU manual Part No.: 4417590_Rev05 chapter 3.4.2.1 and 3.4.2.2. for more information. Below
are general recommendations for a RS 485 (Half Duplex multi-drop):
• 3 wire Overall shielded
• Max. Length: 1000 m (3000 ft.)
• Minimum one twisted pair (typical: 50 twists per meter) with a ground wire
• Rmax:0.12 ohms /m (per line)
• Cmax:119 pF/m
• Lmax:1.45 mH/m

Q – What is the Cable specification when devices are connected to CIU 888 through a Modbus converter?
A – The cabling between the data concentrator /Converter and CIU will be RS 232 (3 wire, overall shielded cable,
Max distance 15 mtr. (50 ft.)). Refer CIU 888 installation Manual Part No.: 4417590_Rev05 chapter 3.4.2.1 for more
information.

Q – Can CIU 888 R103, enables the interface of LTD gauges (Scientific Instrument) and the Skin Temperature
sensors?
A – No, these are special devices and requires polling of additional parameters/data from those devices and current
CIU software does not have that capability yet. These are in road map of future CIU software releases.

Q – How many HART devices I can connect to CIU through a converter?

A – Through a HART to Modbus converter we can connect 50 devices (HART devices). However it is to be noted that
there will be a limitation on how many HART devices can be multidropped on HART bus of that the converter. Normally
the HART bus will allow multi-dropping of 16 devices. Refer documentation of HART device vendor for this.

Q – Can HART devices be shown in the Entis Pro system?

A – Yes, if those devices are connected to CIU 888 through a HART to Modbus converter. CIU then polls the slave
device for the measurement data like Level, Spot temperature of liquid, average product temperature, average vapor
temperature, water level, vapor pressure and observed density etc. Entis Pro then shows are measured and
corresponding calculated values.

Q – If a device is able to transmit more than one measurement value (e.g. Level, Spot temperature and water level)
over Modbus (or HART), what would be the device count when such a device is connected to CIU 888 on RS485 or
through a Modbus converter?
A – As CIU is polling only one slave device (it will however reading more parameters from that device reading different
Modbus registers of that slave device ), it will counted as one device.

Q – Whether we can connect Spot temperature transmitters or averaging temperature transmitters to CIU 888.
A – Yes it is possible, if such temperature transmitters communicates over Modbus RTU protocol (directly or through
Modbus converter). Averaging type temperature sensors generally would be required to be connected to a device
(For example a Tank level gauge or a mux) which can determine what is average product and average vapor
temperature). CIU 888 will poll only the measured data such as Level, Spot temperature of liquid, average product
temperature, average vapor temperature, water level, vapor pressure, observed density etc.

Q – Can we connect any make of PT/Level/TT to CIU 888 over Modbus/HART (thru converter)?
A – Yes, CIU 888 R103 has been qualified with SmartLine Level transmitter (SLG700) and HCS Moore converter
(HCS/HART/MB485/9-30DC – RF (DIN)). However, solution is generic to handle other transmitter models and Modbus
converters it is possible. The Modbus RTU protocol covers most of industrial devices.

Q – Can we connect 2 gauges per tank?

A – No, two gauges for the same measurement are not supported. Each tank license gives flexibility to connect
minimum 1 each of level/ Vapor Pressure/ Spot temperature/ product Temperature (ave.)/ water level, Vapor
temperature (ave.), observed density etc.

Q – Who will supply HART to Modbus converter?

A- These are commercial off the shelf converters. Though Honeywell can deliver these when the project is handled
by Honeywell as a bigger solution package. Below are some model which can be used:
• Moore – Model HCS/HART/MB485/9-30DC-RF (DIN)
• IPC DAS USA- Model HRT-710 (HART to Modbus Converter)

Q- Can we send gauge commands (Like displacer up/down, test, freeze, alarm test, proof test, profiling commands
etc.) over Modbus input interface to Modbus slave devices.
A- No. Gauge commands are not possible over Modbus input interface.

• Note that as older software version of CIU 888 will not support Modbus input interface (Modbus master), the
CIU will need software upgrade as well. The software (Release R103) is available free of cost to existing
installed base customer. Get in touch with Service department/TAC to get this new software.
• You are ready to configure the new board.

Q- How can we upgrade the existing CIU 888 with additional/new functionality?
A- CIU 888 installed base can be upgraded with additional functionalities (redundancy pair / scanning & volume
calculations/ increased tank licenses). Let us understand this using an example

Consider the existing CIU 888 was delivered with single CIU option, scanning option, and for 50 tanks. Hence the
model for the CIU888 was “USSF888S1SZZZZZZ50Z”.
Example 1 – Customer want to upgrade the CIU for redundancy option.
• Step 1 - Note serial number and existing license of CIU.
• Step 2 - Build new functionality model code referring to old model and the new functionality required, also
select “U” in pos. 19 A as per new model selection guide in Product sheet / Price book.
• Step 3 - New model code becomes “URSF888S1SZZZZZZ50ZU”
• Step 4 - Upgrade list price = Price of “R” option in position 2 + Price of “U” option in position 19A.
• Step 5 - Order the above derived model code (only the functionality MSG) along with serial number of CIU
and license.
• Step 6 - New license will be delivered, which need to be loaded in to CIU Follow CIU configuration manual
for upgrading existing CIU.
Note: This upgrade makes the existing CIU pair-able to another CIU 888. New CIU need to be ordered
separately as a new unit. For new unit ordering select “N” at pos. 19A.

Example 2 – Customer want to upgrade the CIU for additional 20 tanks from existing 50 tank license.
• Step 1 - Note serial number and existing license of CIU.
• Step 2 - Build new functionality model code referring to old model and the new functionality required, also
select “U” in pos. 19 A as per new model selection guide in Product sheet / Price book.
• Step 3 - New model code becomes “USSF888S1SZZZZZZ70ZU”
• Step 4 - Upgrade list price = Price of “70” option in position 17 &18 + Price of “U” option in position 19A.
• Step 5 & 6 – as in example 1.
Note: - Ensure that sufficient field ports are installed in CIU to physically connect the tank level gauges on to
CIU. For example, if existing CIU has 4 field ports for 50 tanks with no balance capacity to add on devices
from those 20 tanks, additional field ports will be required to bring data from those additional 20 tanks.

Example 3 – Customer want to upgrade the CIU for “scanning with embedded calculation functionality” from existing
only “scanning functionality” and also wish to upgrade the CIU with additional 10 tanks (from existing 50 tanks license
to 60 tank license).
• Step 1 - Note serial number and existing license of CIU.
• Step 2 - Build new functionality model code referring to old model and the new functionality required, also
select “U” in pos. 19 A as per new model selection guide in Product sheet / Price book.
• Step 3 - New model code becomes “USSF888V1SZZZZZZ60ZU”
• Step 4 - Upgrade list price = Price of “V1” option in position 8 & 9 + Price of “70” option in position 17 &18 +
Price of “U” option in position 19A.
• Step 5 & 6 – as in example 1.
Note: - Ensure that sufficient field ports are installed in CIU to physically connect the tank level gauges on to
CIU. For example, if existing CIU has 2 field ports for 50 tanks with no balance capacity to add on devices
from those 10 tanks, additional field ports will be required to bring data from those additional 10 tanks.
