WHAT IS
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
?
➢ Sustainable development is the organizing
principle for meeting human development goals
while at the same time sustaining the ability of
natural systems to provide the natural resources and
ecosystem services upon which the economy and
society depend. The desirable end result is a state of
society where living conditions and resource use
continue to meet human needs without undermining
the integrity and stability of the natural systems. As
the concept developed, it has shifted to focus more
on economic development, social development and
environmental protection for future generations.
➢ Sustainable
development is a core
concept within the global
environmental policy. It
provides a mechanism
through which society
can interact with the
environment while not
risking damaging the
resource for the future.
THE CONCEPT
OF
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
➢ Sustainable development is development that
meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs. It contains within its
two key concepts:
1) The concept of NEEDS, in particular the
essential needs of the world's poor, to
which overriding priority should be given.
2) The idea of LIMITATIONS imposed by
the state of technology and social
organization on the environment's ability
to meet present and future needs.
