CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Project Context

In the Philippines, just like other countries,

the right to have a good environmental quality has
been hindered by pollution. Pollution has been one of
the major problems and societal concerns in the
country.

People in modern societies spend more than 90% of

their time indoors. Hence, indoor environmental
quality (IEQ) has a significant impact on public
health. The weight of evidence suggests that indoor
environmental contaminants pose significant public
health risks, particularly among children and the
societal costs of illnesses related to indoor
environments are considerable.

Indoor Environmental Quality has been an issue of

discussion since antiquity; Hippocrates observed that
when air, noise and temperature are not in good
condition, people become sick. Workers are often
concerned that they have symptoms or health conditions
from exposures to contaminants in the buildings where
they work. One reason for this concern is that their
symptoms often get better when they are not in the
building. While research has shown that some
respiratory symptoms and illnesses can be associated
with pollution contaminated buildings, it is still

2
unclear what measurements of indoor contaminants show
that workers are at risk for disease. In most
instances where a worker and his or her physician
suspect that the building environment is causing a
specific health condition, the information available
from medical tests and tests of the environment is not
sufficient to establish which contaminants are
responsible. Despite uncertainty about what to measure
and how to interpret what is measured, research shows
that building-related symptoms are associated with
building characteristics including dampness,
cleanliness, and ventilation.

From these prevalent problems, the proponents

were encouraged to develop the Indoor Environmental
Quality Monitoring System (IEQMS). IEQMS is determined
by many factors, including air quality, noise quality
and temperature. Moreover, the proponents main end it
to maintain the good physical and mental health, and
performance.

3
Purpose and Description of the Project

The study is focused on monitoring the Indoor

Environmental Quality through developing a system that
will serve as a means of providing good indoor
environmental quality.

This system will provide functions to help people

indoor, such as monitoring the air quality condition,
the noise pollution, and the temperature.

4
Project Objectives

This study aimed to develop a system for the

monitoring of Indoor Environmental Quality.

The proposed study aimed at identifying ways of

solving environmental issues and problems face by the
people indoor. This study is guided with the following
objectives:

1. Monitor and maintain the air quality condition.

2. Monitor the noise pollution.
3. Monitor the temperature.

5
Scope and Limitation of the Project

In the development of the proposed system for the

Indoor Environmental Quality Monitoring System, the
researchers have come up with identifying the limits
and the scope of this study.

The research proposal aimed to developing a

system for indoor environmental quality monitoring
system intended only for the indoor places.

The proposed system will function by the use of

energy. The system will not work without power supply.

6
Significance of the Study

The proponents conducted the research in order to

help some indoor pollution contaminated areas.
Likewise, this study is looked forward to be of great
help to the following:

House – This study will help and protect the

family from diseases cause by the unconditional indoor
environment.

Class room – This study will help to improve the

indoor environmental quality of the class rooms that
will affect both their learning ability of the
students (more of concentration and attention, high
performance, infrequent absenteeism) and, more
importantly, reducing health illness (asthma,
allergens, etc..).

Office – This study will protect the employers

and employees from physical and mental illness that
affect their concentration and attention.
