“Stone Cactus” emerged from my boredom at Point 84

Jury Duty in 2011. There are several versions
of Cactus font: Standard, Stone and Shiny.
They all take the same framework as a
starting point — the center line running
through the letters — but have been treated
or expanded differently. “Stone Cactus” is
beveled in such a way that the letters could Point 72
be chiseled into stone, or perhaps made
out of a solid, stone-like material. As a sign
painter in the , beveled letters were always
my favorite letters to paint. I used “Stone
Cactus” and “Shiny Cactus” font in my 2012
calendar (I’ve made an edition of calendars
with original fonts for the last eight years). Point 60
“Stone Cactus” will also be used for the
artwork on my friend Glasser’s forthcoming
album, “Interiors”.

“Kiwi Font” is named after my friend Keegan
McHargue, whom I often call Kiwi. Keegan
and I used to draw together a lot, and much
of the time he’d be drawing letters. Some of
his letters employed wiggles in every stroke, Point 84
and whatever good idea is embedded in this
font I probably owe to him, so I decided to
name it in his honor. This is the font I’ve used
most. It’s on my letterhead and my website
since 2009, and on the cover of a book about
the “Fold series”.

“Up Died” is a font I designed for my friend
Nicky Mao’s band, “Up Died Sound”. My old
friend Caleb Hughes deserves credit for the
name, though he didn’t assign it to the band.
One day, he said the phrase jokingly in the Point 84
place of “up side down”. I suggested it as a
band name to Nicky, and it stuck. I made the
font for them in 2009. If you follow the path
of the stroke, it backtracks intermittently.
I’ve used a slightly altered version of it on my
website for the last few years as well.

“Three Wire (SRS)” is a font from a batch Point 84

of fonts that I made on the train going back
and forth between New York and Washington
DC in the fall of 2012. There are three letter
structures in each, and to me they looked like
bent wires. (SRS) refers to Square, Round,
Square, the shape of the wires from inner-
most to outermost. There are other fonts in Point 72
the series, (RSR) (RRS) and (SSR), but this
is my favorite.
