PRE-INTERMEDIATE

Lead-in
Can you find some famous names of actors or actress hidden in the word search? Have a look at it for
one minute. Then you can listen to your teacher's hints. Try to find the names of the actors and
actress.

Discussion:
What do you do in your free time?
Do you prefer outdoor or indoor activities?
Do you like going to the cinema? Why?
What kind of films are your favourite ones?

Can you give some examples of titles that you liked or like?
Are you going to go to the cinema in the nearest future?
What would you like to watch?

Exercise 2.
Which words or phrases have you got in your mind when you hear the word “cinema”? List everything
you can:
a) that contains the word,
b) that is connected with the cinema,
c) that you can describe the cinema with.

Exercise 3.
Have you ever seen any funny or unusual titles of films? Why is it sometimes hard to translate
the titles? If you remember, give some examples.

Exercise 4.
If you worked as a translator, how would you translate these titles? Is there any difference if you
translate it directly/with logic? You can also check with the actual titles. Work in pairs and discuss
the given translations. Then with the whole class decide to choose one common title.

What kind of adjectives can you use to describe a film? Think and fill in the table with your ideas.

Exercise 9.
Discussion. Pick 3-4 titles of different films that are known to all of you. Give your opinion about each
film. Discuss also: plot, characters, special effects, soundtrack, acting, etc. Use adjectives from
the exercise 8. and some phrases for giving your opinion.

Exercise 10.
Discuss with the whole class:
1. Which 5 categories of films do you like (and put them into the table)?
2. Which other titles of the films from each category can you add (fill in the table with them)?
3. Which films from the whole table are the most well-known to you (underline them)?

4. Divide into smaller groups:

Option 1. Each group chooses one film which is liked by all the students from a certain group. Your
task is to act the film out to the class. It can be short (1-2 minutes). All other students try to guess
the film and tell what did they like about your creative drama.

Option 2. Each group chooses the same title of the film – but they have to act out a little different
scenes – so you'll have a mini version of the plot of the film. For instance, one group takes something
from the intro, the other from the main part, the other from the end, etc. The scenes must be different.

Exercise 11.
Evaluate your ideas and acting. Talk in English about it for some time.
Then write what was the best to remember about that meeting.

Lead-in game
Your students are to stand in two rows and each time one student from one row can write down one
name and surname of the famous male or female. You can set the time limit for the action
(3-5 minutes). Then you check if the answers are correct. If so, you give points to each of the teams.
