CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Brief Background of the Study

The Philippines remains as the world leading supplier of traditional coconut

products. The Industry is also finding new products and uses for the “Tree of Life”: Coco

Peat, geotextiles, activated carbon and virgin coconut oil. The coconut industry is a

dominant sector of Philippine agriculture composes of 12 Million Hectare of farm lands,

3.25 Million is devoted to coconut and 68 out of 79 provinces are coconut areas. One of

the provinces that have an abundant supply of coconut is Tagaytay. Coconut industry

gives an opportunity for the locals to create and develop a lot of products that is made

from coconut. The coconut is known for its great versatility as seen the many domestic,

commercial, and industrial uses of its different parts. Coconuts are part of the daily diet

of many people, which lead to the reinvention of an ordinary Cream Pie into Coconut

Cream Pie.

The original ingredients of Coconut Cream Pie are package refrigerated pie

crusts sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, butter, sweetened flaked coconut, vanilla extract,

and whipping cream. Marisol Amparo Habelito, an entrepreneur, comes up with the idea

on how to make the procedures of the Coconut Cream pie become easier and

affordable. Instead of using expensive ingredients, Marisol used crushed biscuits, filling

of sweetened strips of coconut meat and heavy cream on top as alternative ingredients.

The Coconut Cream Pie by Marisol Amparo Habelito was initially sold at

Marisol’s residence in front of the church last 2011. In the year 2013, the owner of the
Puzzle Mansion was captivated by the soft crust and the right blend of sweetness of the

Coconut Cream Pie and helped Marisol with financing the Coconut Cream Pie business

to transfer it to the Puzzle Queen Bakeshop (Museum’s bakeshop) which also offers

cookies, pastries and other delicacies. The Puzzle Mansion is located in Purok 4,

Cuadra St., Brgy, Asisan, Tagaytay City.

The proposed study will be the establishment of The Puzzle Queen Coconut

Cream Pie because the said establishment will only offer its carrier product which is the

Coconut Cream Pie. The Puzzle Queen Coconut Cream Pie is located at EGI-Rufina

Plaza Central Exchange Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue Cor. Taft Avenue, Pasay City. The

standard procedure in making the pie will serve to the customers in the area of Pasay

City. Since Pasay is bordered to the north by the City of Manila, Makati to the northeast,

Taguig to the east, and Parañaque to the south, it is the right place to establish a store

of delicacies.

This feasibility study therefore is conducted to determine if The Puzzle Queen

Coconut Cream Pie in the City of Pasay is a viable project. The researchers come up

firm and if the business goes bankrupt, all the partners will have to clear the

debts even if they have to sell of their personal belongings.

2. Disagreement among the partners can lead to problems for the business.

3. There is a limit to the capital invested. Because of the fact that maximum 20

members are allowed, the business may find it difficult to expand after a certain

limit.

die or resigns or becomes bankrupt.

Objective

The Puzzle Queen Coconut Cream Pie focuses not only in helping other people

by providing jobs but also to help the country through contributing taxes

Contribution to the Philippine Economy

Businesses contribute to economies by bringing growth and innovation to the

Philippines especially to the community in which the business is established. Putting up

a business like selling delicacy is one of the popular businesses in the country, knowing

that this type of industry can be easily manufactured at home, which can make it as a
big contributor to the Philippine economy. One of the examples of the contribution of

selling a delicacy is that having a supplier of coconut which is abundant in the country

that can help the industry of the coconut to move and grow. It also contributes to the

government because the firm needs to pay taxes. Aside from this, it can give jobs to the

people who are willing to be in this kind of industry.

Employment Generation

Poverty is one of the major problems that our country faces today. One cause of

poverty is the numbers of unemployed individuals that is increasing. The unemployed

persons must be gainfully employed so they can support their basic needs. The Puzzle

Queen Coconut Cream Pie will help lessen this problem by hiring people if the proposed

business becomes feasible. The company also aims to give emphasis on how the

workers will attain new skills through trainings that they can relate to their independent

living, their preparation for works and maintaining a genuine employment.

Social Desirability

In this certain project, the researchers consider the whole part of the business

especially the social impact in the community. The best place to find young fresh

coconuts is, of course, in the markets of the tropics, like the Philippines. Filipino’s

passion is to eat all the time. The proponents want to give the consumers new and fresh

taste of pie. The product is healthy to eat since its main ingredient is coconut – known

as one of the wonder foods on Earth for having multiple health benefits. Based on the

survey, the primary and secondary target market of the product of the Coconut Cream

Pie will be popular in terms of its taste and affordability.

Moreover, this project does not only give a great deal of benefits to the

proposing parties but to the society as well. With the establishment of this business, the

Coconut Cream Pie can contribute to the improvement of the economy locally by

somehow increasing the employed people in the society.

Environmental Impact

The discarded husks were the largest waste product in making the proposed

product. Wastes generated during production are mostly organic, so this may not give a

problem to the environment, the community and to the health of the residents near the

site of production. Because organic wastes like coconut shells would eventually

decompose and enrich the Earth. Aside from that it may also be made into useful

materials like ropes, mats, brushes, brooms, fertilizer, livestock feed and handicrafts. In

terms of garbage, the management will do their part by segregating the waste to

biodegradable and non-biodegradable. This will be picked up by the trash trucks

provided by the local government.
