5.0 Acceptability Criteria for tests on Basic Materials for Conereting AG sa Testing of Water The water to be used for concreting should be tested in accordance with BS 2690 for the following: a) Determination of the chloride of the water: \ b) Determination of the chloride content of all acid soluble chlorides (CL content), The test results should be expressed in PPM (i.e parts per million) ©) Determination of the sulphate content of all acid soluble sulphates ~ (SO3- content). The results should be expressed in parts per million (PPM). 4) Determination of the amount of dissolved solids- expressed also in parts per million. ‘The water may also be tested according to BS 8148: 1980 ‘Water for making Concrete’ OF 52 Testing of fine Aggregates Fine aggregates (sand) to be used for concreting should be tested in accordance with BS 812: part 4 and the following should be reported: a) The chloride content of all soluble chloride (Cl content) expressed as a percentage by weight of the sample. b) The sulphate content of all sulphates (SO3 content) expressed as a percentage by weight of the sample. ©) Results of sieve analysis and determination of the amount of organic matter are also to be submitted. ero ie The contractor shall be concerned with three general types of tests on coarse aggregates, as follows: a) Initial laboratory acceptance tests for suitability as to gradation (by sieve analysis), cleaniiness (silt and organic impurities), strength, soundness or durability and in some cases toughness, wear resistance, foreign substance and composition. b) Secondary laboratory tests on approved samples to determine physical properties used in mix design, such as absorption, specific gravity, unit-weight,voids and bulking. ©) Field-tests for secondary acceptance or control, such as gradation, cleanliness, moisture content and unit weight. These tests should again be carried out in accordance with BS 812: 1975 part 1 to 4. OA & OC for Fynefield Filling Station Development, Asaba — Benin Expressway, Asaba, Delta State 2 In addition to submitting the manufacturers test certificate for the cement to be used on this site, cement on site should be tested in accordance with BS 12: 1978 for - Setting time = Soundness - Consistency of standard paste - Compressive strength - Fineness, ete CX} ss Testing of Stee Rei In addition to providing the manufacturers certificate, three random samples of each size of steel reinforcement bars being used on site should be tested in accordance with BS 4461: 1978, preferably in different laboratories. 6.0 Acceptability criteria for Testing Fresh Concrete - Slump Test The consistency of the mix for good concrete should be such that it can be transported, placed and finished sufficiently easily and without segregation. Any concrete satisfying these conditions is assumed to be workable. A measure of the workability of fresh concrete should be done on site using the slump test apparatus. 7.0 Acceptability Criteria for Testing Hardened Concrete - Compression Test Cube tests should be carried out in accordance with BS 1881: 1983 The contractor is expected to be familiar with the type of moulds as well as the method of casting cubes. Cubes should be tested for their 7 and 28 days works cube strength We hope that all the above quality control procedures are clear to you. However, should you require further clarifications, do not hesitate to contact us. We shalll supervise the sampling ‘and preparation of concrete cubes for tests whenever major structural elements are being cast. ‘We strongly advise that you proceed immediately with all the above tests.
