Job description of a Structural Engineer

Structural engineers design, plan and oversee the construction of new buildings and bridges, or
alterations and extensions to existing properties or other structures.

The structural engineer is primarily concerned with designing aesthetically pleasing buildings and
structures that are safe and capable of withstanding the elements to which they will be exposed.

The structural engineer should build 2D and 3D models using computer-aided design technology (e.g.
AutoCAD & other engineering software).

Structural Engineer Duties & Responsibilities


The role and function of a Structural Engineer includes the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Prepare reports, designs and drawings.


2. Make calculations about pressures, loads and stresses.
3. Consider the strength of construction materials and select appropriately.
4. Provide technical advice on safe designs and construction methods.
5. Monitor and inspect all work undertaken by contractors to ensure structural soundness.
6. Administer contracts and manage projects.
7. Inspect company assets (properties/ buildings) to evaluate the condition and issue report with
recommendations.
8. Use computer aided design technology for simulation purposes.
9. Obtain planning and/or building regulations approval.
10. Analyze configurations of the basic components of a structure.
11. Liaise with professional staff such as surveyors, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and
builders.

Structural Engineer Requirements, Skills &


Qualifications
The following common skills and qualifications are required of a Structural Engineer:

1. Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (essential).


2. At least 6years post-graduation work experience as a Structural Engineer (essential).
3. Professional registration with the Council for regulation of engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
4. Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
5. Meticulous attention to detail with the superb organizational skills.
6. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
8. Excellent communication and IT skills.
9. Expert experience in project management.
10. Advanced knowledge of construction methods, materials and legal regulations.
11. Sound understanding of physics and mathematics.
12. Ability to liaise with professionals from other disciplines.
13. Three-dimensional conceptual skills.
