His father, was rector of Somersby (1807–1831), Tennyson with two of
his brothers liked to write poetry in their teens and a collection of poems by all three was published locally when Alfred was only 17.
Education and first publication
Tennyson studied at King Edward VI Grammar School, He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1827. Arthur Henry Hallam and William Henry Brookfield, were his closest friends. His first publication was a collection of "his boyish rhymes and those of his elder brother Charles" entitled Poems by Two Brothers, published in 1827.

After leaving Cambridge, Tennyson had remained close to Arthur
Tennyson had remained close to Arthur Hallam, who had fallen in
love with Tennyson's sister Emily. When Hallam died suddenly in 1833, likely from a stroke, it was a devastating loss for the poet and his family.
