ABHIVYAKTI
Abhivyakti is the performing arts and expressions club of IIM Lucknow, focusing on Stage theatre, Street plays
and Mime. It has a long standing tradition of telling stories in a new way and in various formats to the IIM
Lucknow community. Besides organizing different events and workshops, we participate in various
competitions, and stage our own productions round the year.

FOUNDATION DAY PLAY

The beginning of the academic year witnessed team Abhivyakti enthrall its audience by performing its first stage
play for the year "Bechara Mara Gaya", a Hindi adaptation of the play “Death of an Anarchist” by Dario Fo. It
was an ironical satire on the dilemmas faced by today’s youth.

INDEPENDENCE DAY STREET PLAY

Continuing the tradition of bringing out the best talent in the new batch, Abhivyakti performed the first street
play of the year on Independence Day. PGP34 students put up a great show with guidance from the senior
batch. Packed with punch lines, the play captured the attention of the audience and enthralled the audience.

MANFEST-VARCHASVA –STAGE AND STREET PLAYS

Continuing the tradition of bringing in unique themes on the stage, Team Abhivyakti performed their self-
scripted play “Uncle” in this year’s Manfest-Varchasva bringing in elements of how an old age couple survive
through their lonely life. Through exemplary efforts, we were able to put up an engaging show on stage by
mixing humour and emotions.
In addition, Abhivyakti performed a street play ‘Rakt’ on the theme of let’s talk period sensitizing the villagers
including primary/secondary school students and women. We won the Nukkad competition.

REPUBLIC DAY – STREET PLAY

The youth of India is misguided by the glamour of money and power prevalent in today’s modern era. Through
subtle comedy and satire, Abhivyakti brought this idea onto the stage in their enthralling performance in street
play named “Bhatka Hua Yuva”. The spell binding dialogues, gripping story-line, strong direction and acting
made sure the audience enjoyed every bit of the street play.

ART STROKES
Bound by a profound love for art in all its forms, Art Strokes, the fine arts club of IIM Lucknow aims to infuse,
revive and reinforce the same across the campus. We believe that art is for everyone not just the Da Vinci's and
Michelangelo’s in society. Art is a force of energy anyone can harness and then use to connect with nature, the
people around them or in some cases their own self. We at Art Strokes wish to make everyone aware of this
energy and assist them in using it.

With the aim to revive and instill a profound love for art amongst all, Art Strokes has conducted multiple
events, both independently as well as in collaboration with other clubs and committees in the campus
throughout the year.

Following are the list of events conducted by Art Strokes independently -

ART NIGHTS

This event gave IIM-L students a platform to unleash their creativity. These art nights helped to promote
interest in arts and facilitated students to display their paintings in the upcoming exhibitions. The creations
were well appreciated by students, faculty and staff at the campus.

HELL HAAT

This was first of its kind arts cum exhibition cum marketing event. The students were asked to create any form
of art out of their interest in the stipulated time. During the exhibition, the artist needed to use his/her
marketing skills and proceed with a sale. The total sales value of the paintings created and sold as a part of the
event was over Rs. 10,000. The event also facilitated the SBN students to complete their art assignment and to
let others explore canvas painting and gain an interest in arts.

AFICIONADO

This online quiz comprised of exciting and fun-filled questions related to art and culture. The quiz was set up
in a way so that one can test the knowledge about fine arts and culture while still enjoying the cosiness of one’s
hostel room. Considering the fact that parallel events were going on during the period when the quiz was
conducted, the response from IIML community was overwhelming.

EXPRESS-O-LOVE

This event was aimed to celebrate love and togetherness, and spread the charm of Valentine’s day. It is a DIY
card making event where Art Strokes encouraged and assisted students to express their love creatively via
handmade greeting cards. Given the busy schedule and tiring day, Express-o-Love got a great footfall of
participants showing both excitement and enthusiasm for the event. After the event, the creations were
personally delivered by Art Strokes team to the doorstep of the recipients. The event brought smiles on
numerous faces.

Following is the list of the events conducted in collaboration with other clubs and committees at IIM Lucknow

CAMPUS ON CANVAS

2018. The event had a dual objective - one, to promote unity among the students of the new batch and second,

2
to help them understand, imbibe and portray the culture of IIM Lucknow in their own creative way. This also
promoted art as a medium of expression among the students.

In collaboration with Mess Community, Rangolis were made in the mess to revive the Diwali feel and augment
the Diwali dinner experience for the students.

in collaboration with Team MV. This was organised for students from different colleges pan India to enhance
their experience at IIM Lucknow.

Art Strokes has shared ideas with Mess Committee to reshape the walls of mess using colours and sketches.

BHAVISHYA

Bhavishya is the social initiatives committee of IIM Lucknow. Our aim is two-fold:
a) To raise awareness about social issues among the students of IIM Lucknow, sensitize them and
energize them to take action; and
b) To actively engage in projects that directly benefit society at large. Through our activities in education,
health, women empowerment and other social sectors, we leverage the technical and managerial
competencies of students and the faculty at our institute to help the underprivileged. Till date,
Bhavishya has reached out to thousands of beneficiaries through its activities.
Activities that continue throughout the year are listed below

EVENING SCHOOL

Evening School is an initiative where the students of IIM Lucknow provide supplementary education to the
less fortunate children living in the neighbouring villages around campus. Almost all of these children attend
school during the day. However, they find themselves grappling with issues of poor quality education. Hence,
the young students are supported by the IIM-L community where student volunteers dedicate time every week
to teach various subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science to children. The usual strength of children is
around 50.

VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT

Our aim is to transform Saidapur village (3-4 km from the institute) into a model village in all major aspects
such as sanitation, education, health, digital literacy, etc. We adopted Saidapur village in June 2016 after an
exhaustive search for a village that most needed our support to develop. As part of our continued efforts to
help the village prosper, we tiled the roof and the ‘aangan’ of the primary school and built a new drainage
system in the village. Most importantly, the entire budget for this activity was taken from the money collected
in Harmony Cup 2018.

PAARIJAT

With millions of girls in requirement of quality education, Bhavishya started Paarijat, an initiative which
connects people who want to contribute towards sponsoring the education of a girl child. All the donations go
to Prerna School, an institution for the less fortunate girls under the Study Hall Foundation. Prerna school has
taken more than 600 girls under their wing from all walks of life. Prerna, through its pioneering efforts in the
field of girl-child education has won accolades at international levels including the 6th Annual Global Citizen
Awards UN Association – USA East Bay.

BLOOD DONATION CAMPS

We hold 2 blood donation camps in the academic year organized with RML Hospital. The first blood donation
camp was held in August and the second was held in February. We saw great participation from the IIM L
community with more than 100 donors in each camp.

6
MEDICAL CAMPS

We hold 2 medical camps in one academic year where we provide free testing for basic illnesses and diseases
to all the contractual workers in the institute and the residents of Saidapur village. In December, we organized
a free medical camp in association with Lion's club - Lucknow with the objective of providing free medical
tests to villagers who don’t even have a basic health centre in and around their village. Basic treatment and
general check-ups were provided to make people aware of their health status. More than 150 residents of the
village showed up and got themselves tested. In addition, we ran a sanitary napkins drive, wherein we distributed
sanitary pads to the women and sensitized them regarding its benefits and encouraged them to observe hygiene
and cleanliness in all aspects of daily life.

CLOTH DONATION DRIVES

We collect winter wear and even normal clothes from students, faculty, staff living in the institute and donate
them to needy people in Saidapur village.

COMMUNITY VISITS

We organize an orphanage visit on Independence Day and an old-age home/NGO visit on Republic Day to
sensitize the students about the children and senior citizens living in these homes and interact with them. On
the occasion of the 72nd Independence Day, Team Bhavishya took some loving and enthusiastic volunteers to
visit an orphanage called Don Bosco Ashalayam. This orphanage focuses on making capable young men of the
children under their care. They stress on holistic development through quality education and extra-curricular
activities. The children are encouraged to pursue their passion for dance, music and painting and indeed excel
in all.

HARMONY CUP

Harmony Cup is our annual cricket tournament where we bring together the IIM Lucknow community to
participate and play for a cause. We have received enthusiastic participation from students, professors and staff
members. The funds collected from the tournament are used for various social causes, primarily the
development of our adopted village. By utilizing funds in an effective manner, we aim to develop the village so
as to propagate sustainable practices, alleviate poverty and improve the standard of living of the residents of
Saidapur. Harmony Cup is an unique platform where the entire IIM Lucknow fraternity collectively pledges to
take action and better the society. Continuing the rich legacy, Bhavishya presents “Harmony Cup, 2019”. This
year we aim towards the skill development of the residents of Saidapur. This year, we aspire to set up self-help

CULTURAL COMMITTEE

The Cultural Committee is a two-year student body that endeavors to add life and laughter to all occasions,
celebrations, festivals and gatherings at IIM-Lucknow. We believe in creating moments of joy at every
touchpoint of a students’ life, from freshers to farewell and all along. “You are a fraction of every person you
meet”, therefore we look at fostering and augmenting interactions among the batch, through this we aspire to
forge memories that become a cherished nostalgia for a lifetime.
The bygone year saw numerous initiatives and nuances of student engagement and celebration. The underneath
is a brief snapshot of the activities undertaken: fa

ANTI-PURGATORY

Anti-Purgatory was a parallel to the normative purgatory that an inmate of heaven undergoes to enter the gates
of heaven. Anti-Purgatory was a process of revisiting the 7 sins through seven stages by doing tasks with
prospective batch mates at every stage. The underlying idea was to break the ice and kick start batch interaction
even before they arrive at helL. Besides engendering a friendly interaction among the batch, Anti-Purgatory
was also aimed at getting people to brush up their PowerPoint and excel skills.

PARICHAY

Parichay, the freshers’ night, was a gallimaufry of music, dance, drama and band performances. Parichay, as is
evident from the name, was aimed at introducing and being the launchpad of the fresher batch by enabling
them to showcase their innate talent. The sophomores also got a chance to perform on the evening and engage
with the batch in an informal setting. The event culminated by selecting Mr. Fresher and Miss Fresher.

CAMARADERIE LAUNCH

At the outset, the rulebook was launched prior to Camaraderie explaining the general rules, scoring schemes
and judging criteria.

CAMARADERIE

Camaraderie, the inter-section war, is a long-lived tradition at IIM L which aims at unifying each section by the
undivided section-spirit. Camaraderie’18 was based on the theme of “ranbhoomi” in which sections had to
conquer different dwars to reach the kingdom. With over 30 online and offline events in camaraderie, we looked
at giving every person a chance to come to the forefront and perform. Some of the events are as follows:
Designing section poster, logo, name, anthem; Recording a section spirit video, dubsmash; fashion parade, solo
and a duet dance performance, role reversal, dramatics, singing, painting among others

FESTIVALS

Offering an escape from the mundane, the Cultural Committee facilitated the celebration of the following
festivals

Ganesh Chaturthi: Bringing the holy festival of Ganesh Puja to the Hellites, a two-day celebration, honoring
the great Bappa Morya was arranged for both the students and the faculty. Along with regular aartis and

13
prayers, in the mess hall, a procession of Ganesh Visarjan too was carried out by our own students, throwing
colours in the wind and dancing to the tune of Dhol lost in the euphoria of the occasion.

Dandiya Night (Workshops were also conducted): The much celebrated festival of Gujarat, Dandiya, was
celebrated during the Navratri. Along with the sparkling ambience, that s suited to the youthful fervour of the
festival, the students danced to the tunes of Gujarati songs with the melodious clap of Dandiya sticks.

Diwali: The festival of lights was celebrated with much zeal, in spite of the exams going on. The students
painted the sky with light with a horde of sky lanterns. As they lit up like stars, the students enjoyed the
lighting and diyas in the Fauji area. The arena was covered by wall of umbrellas with a hue of drapes forming
a canopy at the centre. The camera clicks never stopped throughout the evening, nor did the cheerful laughter
of the Hellites.

Makar Sankranti (Kite Festival): The festival of Kite Flying saw a huge crowd of students zigzagging the
football field with kite strings in their hands. From brightly coloured kites, to the process of tying the knot
and giving wind to the kite, the four hours of nostalgia left the students asking for more wind and sun. As the
students tried to cut off each other’s kites, the sound of “Kai Po Che’ echoed in tune with the traditional
songs on the speaker

Lohri: The festival of Lohri, reignited the communal feeling of celebration as the blazing bonfire, brought
warmth and the whispers of a new season. As the curling smoke bid adieu to the chilly winds, the night
announced the arrival of summer with the energy of Dhol and the harmony of various traditional songs. The
students and faculty circled the ceremonial fire as they offered revdi, peanuts and popcorn to the flame.

INSTITUTE GATHERINGS

Breaking the monotony, the Cultural Committee conducted Institute Gatherings from time to time, to rekindle
the party spirit in students and to give them more occasions of bonding outside the classroom to make
memories that last forever.

FAREWELL

Farewell 2019 was meant to cherish the treasured moments that the batch of PGP33 and ABM14 had made
over their stay at IIM-L or hel(L). The farewell walked them through their journey at IIM-L amidst cultural
performances, picturesque photoshoots and award ceremony. The night was concluded with a gala dinner along
with live-band performance followed by institute party.

IIM-L is not just an institute to revere but also an emotion to cherish, a family to adore and a memory to
treasure; the cultural committee constantly endeavors to raise the culture at IIM-L a few notches further.

RIGHT ANGLES:
Right Angles is the photography club of IIM Lucknow. The primary aim of the club is to capture the magical
moments in the campus through photography, which the student community can cherish for their entire life.
Apart from this, the club intends to spread knowledge regarding photography on the campus. In this endeavour,
the club conducts numerous events across the academic year.

PHOTONIGHT

It's Right Angles' flagship event. Like all the previous editions this time also the turnout was very good. In
addition to using fairy lights, we used fireworks and saber rods for the sci-fi effect which people loved. It was
a great opportunity for the new inductees of the club to test the water and experience the life as a photographer
of IIML. The other objective of the event was to introduce new students to long exposure and ignite interest
in photography as a hobby as many other students had brought their camera with them to take photographs.

PHOTOWALK

It is the first event where we introduce the beauty of IIML through the lens to everyone. From flowers to
peacocks, and peculiar insects to migratory birds, our campus is embellished with a plethora of opportunities
for nature lovers. All the interested people can join the complete walk around the campus during an awesome
morning. This is actually an icebreaker kind of event to introduce the Right Angles to the first year students
and also our team get to know the photography enthusiasts.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

The flagship event is the DSLR workshop, which is usually conducted in association with industry stalwarts.
The event is usually clubbed with a photography competition for the students, subject to participation footfall.
The event’s primary objective to brush up the basics for all photography enthusiasts on campus.

BHAVISHYA PHOTOSHOOT

This is an event where we, the members of Right Angles, click pictures of different groups and collect a
voluntary amount of money for the same. The money is then donated to Bhavishya to carry out a particular
welfare project. This year, we clicked 500+ pics during the event and collected 10000 rupees and counting.

CONVOCATION PHOTOSHOOT

The club extends its best wishes to the outgoing batch and as a parting gift to them, will extend full support to
the convocation committee through covering of the entire event by launching a photo booth and capturing the
‘once in a lifetime’ moment for PGP33.

SPORTS COMMITTEE

Sports is a metaphor for overcoming obstacles and achieving against high odds. It teaches us to stay focused,
dedicated and also understand you are going to have ups and downs and you need to keep running right through
them. Sports is one common denominator at IIM-L that brings everyone together. One place that displays the
camaraderie among the students, playing it out on the field with real team spirit and sportsmanship. Sports at
IIM-L also is a vent to release all the built-up pressure of academics, placements and much more.
The batch of PGP27 pioneered in the formation of Sports Club. But due to its unprecedented impact, the club
soon attained the status of a committee in 2014. The responsibilities and activities have been ever expanding
since then. The objective of Sports Committee is to provide a platform to the students to compete in sports at
the highest level, organized within the institute as well as other colleges nationwide. It also provides the student
with ample opportunities to venture into different games with the available infrastructure to keep them
refreshed physically as well as mentally.
FOUNDATION DAY

With the college foundation day being a quiet and formal event, we brought in a change adding the element of
sports into it, sports which not many here opt to play. The list of activities included powerlifting and gym
events, squash, swimming, badminton, snooker and a cross-country run to flag off the events spanned across
from July 23-25. The response was very much encouraging with more than 200 participants turning up across
all the games.
SANGRAM

The second inter-section event after Camaraderie, the section war was rekindled. Teams battled it out on the
field, building up an intense friendly rivalry. The inclusion of fun games such as 7-stones, tug of war and arm
wrestling gave an unique flavour to this event. Over the 4 days of the event from 18-21 October, the
participation and enthusiasm shown by the students amidst the busy schedule of classes, assignments, and
quizzes were encouraging. Students put their heart out in winning the championship bringing in the team effort
to fore. It was also a platform to unearth some new sporting talents towards the process of preparing for inter-
college events and specially Sangharsh’19.
MANFEST-VARCHASVA

The event every one of us wait for, Manfest-Varchasva lived up to the expectations, providing raw
entertainment and a platform to compete with the best of the country. Being one of the largest inter B-school
sports event, we received registrations of over 1000 for sports spread over 21 distinct events. The intense rivalry
between various colleges was on display, notably the one between Lucknow and Calcutta.
The performance by the students was highly evident, thumping the oppositions to retain the championship by
a considerable margin. An event to remember for long, it was for 3 days when the whole of college was together
cheering and supporting our brigades representing the college.
SANGHARSH

The battle of the big 4, the inter- IIM A, B, C, L sports fest was organized in IIM L this year. This event brought
the whole college together on the fields of IIM L, and we made our way to the championship beating IIM A,
B, C by a vast margin. We were fortunate enough to give outstanding hospitality to 600 students coming from
different IIMs. Powerlifting was first time introduced as a sport in Sangharsh this year, where IIM L won the
gold. We also organized sports for physically challenged people, which attracted a lot of media attention. IIM
L vs. IIM C kabaddi match in the common area of hostel 16 was the biggest and most intense match of the

40
tournament. We won gold in Cricket, Volleyball, Badminton, Snooker, Carrom, Squash, and silver in Football,
Basketball, TT, Chess, hockey and Throwball. Sangharsh also included some informal events such as the
bonfire, Live Jam, Flash mob with the help of Random walk and 3.4 club.
HELL LEAGUES

Leagues were conducted for different sports like volleyball, tennis, and futsal in February. Volleyball league
consisted of 8 teams across PGP 33 and 34. Tennis league was first time started and got a tremendous response
with 12 teams fighting for the league. Futsal league also got the participation of 70+ people across the two
batches. The sole reason for these leagues was to promote sports culture in IIM L and provide a platform for
students to showcase their talent. With Sangharsh’20 in mind, these leagues proved to be quite fruitful for the
college.
PGP I VS. PGP II FAREWELL MATCHES

Matches were conducted for one last time between PGP33 and 34 batches for sports such as Cricket, Football,
Basketball, Frisbee, TT, and Volleyball. New kabaddi mat, synthetic TT flooring, synthetic basketball court,
and refurbished football field were the significant infrastructural progress. Sports Committee was able to put
forth its efforts in achieving the agenda it has pitched in, improving the participation and performance in sports.
