EXPERIMENT 5-6 MODELLING,ANALYSIS AND CONTROL OF A DC COMPOUND MOTOR

Part-1: Modelling
TASK:-1 Develop time-domain simulation block diagram for long-shunt compound motor defined by the
following differential equations.
Part-1: Modelling Modeling Parameters:
S. No Parameter Value
1. Terminal voltage (Vt) 220 V
2. Self inductance of armature (LAA) 0.012 H
3. Self inductance of shunt field (LFF) 120 H
4. Self inductance of series field (LFS) 0.6 H
5. Mutual inductance between armature and shunt field (LAF) 1.0 H
6. Mutual inductance between armature and series field (LAFS) 0.6 H
7. Mutual inductance between shunt field and series field (LFFS) 12 H
8. Armature resistance (RA) 0.6 Ω
9. Series field resistance (RFS) 1 Ω
10. Shunt field resistance (RF) 150Ω
11. Load torque (TL) 25 N-m
12. Moment of inertia (J) 1 kg. m2

We have 2 ways to model a control system one is Transfer function analysis and another is state space
analysis. We use transfer function analysis for single input and single output analysis, and also for linear time
invariant systems. But here we have multiple inputs and multiple outputs also the system is time variant. So
we can’t use transfer function analysis here we have to use state space analysis only.

TASK 2:- Plot the response of Rotor Speed, Rotor Torque, Armature Current, and Field Current under the
following conditions. Comment on your observations.

1. Fixed load torque (TL) of 25 N-m and Fixed moment of inertia (J) of 1 kg.m2
2. Variable load torque (TL) of (0-200) N-m and Fixed moment of inertia (J) of 1 kg.m2

3. Fixed load torque (TL) of 25 N-m and Variable moment of inertia (J) of (0-200) kg.m2

1. Fixed load torque (TL) of 25 N-m and Fixed moment of inertia (J) of 1 kg.m2

Observations :- For a fixed load torque and fixed moment of inertia we observe the following graph

1) We observe the graph of speed is increased initially and reaches steady state after some time.
2) The graph of torque also increased initially with more peak and then reaches its steady state after
some time.
3) In this case both speed and torque are raised initially and reached their steady states.
4) Also the field current has raised initially and come back to is steady state whereas armature current
increases gradually and reaches its steady state. Field current settles fast as compared to armature
current.

TASK 2(2):- WhenJ=1 constant and Tl is varied

180 55 10 9 1.4 138
200 55 10 9 1.4 160

Observations:-
1) When we fix the J and made the load to vary ,we observe that the speed decreases as the load
increases
2) Also we find out that the torque is increasing as the load increases.
3) This is because as the load we are connecting is connected in parallel the resultant resistance will be
less therefore current will increase .
4) We know that electrical power is equal to voltage multiplied with current but the mechanical power is
equal to torque multiplied with number of rotations multiplied with some constant.
5) From this equation as power is constant ,the variations will be between torque and number of
rotations .
6) As the torque is increasing the number of rotations will obviously decreases that is speed will
decrease.
7) When we keep torque load constant and start varying moment of inertia (J) we observe that
Speed is increasing and torque is decreasing.
8) Inertia is known as opposing factor. Therefore when inertia is increasing the torque is decreasing.

TASK 3:-

Observations:-
1) When the Torque load is varied for certain time period usng the switching logic ,we find out that
speed has disturbance from that period which decreases and after the time period it increases.
2) For that time period we have increase the load hence the speed decreases.
3) We also find that torque increases during that time period and decreases after that time period.
4) As we are increasing the load torque is increasing reason is as mentioned in the previous case.
5) Even the armature current also increases and then decreases.

Observations:-
1) When both torque load and inertia are varied at a time for the same particular interval we observe
that all the Torque, speed, armature current increases at first and reaches their steady state after
some time.
2) We also find out that the field current graph doesn’t vary in any any case it is just going to increase
gradually and reaching its steady state.
