MATHEMATICS 9

Name: ____________________________________________________ Score: _______________

Level & Section: ____________________________________________ Date: ________________

I. Identify the type of variation used in each equation. (k is constant)

𝑘
___________________ 1. 𝑝 = 𝑥
___________________ 2. 𝑝 = 𝑘𝑥
___________________ 3. 𝑝 = 𝑘𝑥 2
𝑘𝑥 2
___________________ 4. 𝑝 = 𝑦
___________________ 5. 𝑝 = 𝑘𝑥𝑦𝑧

II. Write a general variation formula for the following.

__________ 6. V varies directly with the square root of t.
__________ 7. F varies inversely with the sum of x and y.
__________ 8. The variable y varies directly with x and inversely with the square of z.
__________ 9. F varies inversely with the cubed root of D.
__________ 10. M varies directly with the difference of squares of A and B.

III. Solve the following variation problems. Show your solutions. Use the back portion of your
test papers if necessary.
11-12. y varies directly with x. If y = -4 when x = 2, find y when x = -6.

13-14. y varies inversely with x. If y = 40 when x = 16, find x when y = -5.

15-16. y varies inversely with x. If y = 7 when x = -4, find y when x = 5.

17-18. y is directly proportional to x. If x = 30 when y = 15, find x when y = 100.

19-20. y varies inversely as the square of x. If y = 25 when x = 100, find y when x = 1000.

IV. Simplify each radical completely.

_________ 21. √63 _________ 24.
√3
8√11
_________ 22. 3√45 _________ 25. 2√2
√21
_________ 23.
√3

V. Perform the indicated operations.

26-27. Simplify:6√5 + 5√6 − 3√6 36-37. Simplify:3√24 + 7√54

28-29. Simplify:2√8 − 2√108 − 7√32 + 4√27 38-39. Simplify:2√28 − √7 + 6√63

30-31. Multiply and simplify:3√2 ⋅ √10 40-41. Multiply and simplify:√𝑥 5 𝑦 3 ⋅ √3𝑥𝑦

3 3
32-33. Multiply and simplify: √15𝑎2 ⋅ √9𝑎4 42-43. Divide and simplify:√24𝑥 2 ÷ √3𝑥 3

√80𝑥 2 𝑦 √18𝑐 3
34-35. Divide and simplify: 44-45. Divide and simplify:
√30𝑥𝑦 2 √9𝑐
VI. Solve for x.
46. √𝑥 = 15

47. √𝑥 + 10 = 12

48. √𝑥 + 7 = 5

49. √3𝑥 + 8 = √2𝑥 + 12

50. √𝑥 + 54 = 7√𝑥

VII. Solve the following problems. Show your solution.

51-53. The time it takes to fly from Los Angeles to New York varies inversely as the speed of
the plane. If the trip takes 6 hours at 900 km/h, how long would it take at 800 km/h?

54-56. Hooke's law states that the force required to stretch a spring a distance is directly
proportional to the distance stretched. A force of 3 newtons stretches a spring 15
centimeters. A force of 4 newtons would stretch the spring how far?

57-58. The time to drive a certain distance (t) varies inversely to the rate of speed (r). Mary
drives 47 miles per hour for 4 hours. How long would it take her to make the same trip
at 55 mph? Round to the nearest tenth.

59-61. The power, in watts, dissipated as heat in a resistor varies directly with the square
of the voltage and inversely with the resistance. If 20 volts are placed across a 20-ohm
resistor, it will dissipate 20 watts. What voltage across a 10-ohm resistor will dissipate
40 watts?

62-65. You have heard of IQ, a person’s intelligence quotient. The value of IQ varies directly as
a person’s mental age and inversely as that person’s chronological age. A person with a
mental age of 30 and a chronological age of 25 has an IQ of 120. What is the chronological
age of a person with a mental age of 30 and an IQ of 90? Round to the nearest year, if
necessary.

Rubrics: 3 points: answered the question correctly with proper solution.

2 points: made some error in the solution but arrived at the correct answer.
1 point: made some error in the solution and did not arrive at the correct answer
