Ashaway SuperNick® ZX Micro Squash String Provides Precise Touch,

Maintains Tension, and Maximizes Power

-- New 18 Gauge String incorporates a nylon multifilament core in special ZX wear layer of Zyex®
filaments

Ashaway has introduced SuperNick® ZX Micro, a new 18-gauge (1.15 mm) squash string with a
multifilament nylon core wrapped in a special wear layer of Zyex® filaments. Designed to provide
precise touch while maintaining excellent tension control, SuperNick ZX Micro is intended for play-
ers who require superior durability, better control and increased power, but still want the feel of a
nylon core SuperNick string.

"What makes Zyex so good for racquet strings is its low dynamic stiffness," said Ashaway's Steve
Crandall. "This allows the strings to stretch and recover more completely than other synthetic
materials, thus generating more power with less impact shock. When you combine the Zyex wear
layer in SuperNick ZX Micro with a multifilament nylon core, you get that soft feel and precise
touch that players have long associated with SuperNick strings.

Zyex fibers woven into jacket constructions also enhance string playability according to Crandall.
Zyex can also be made to have exceptionally low creep under continuous tension, allowing rac-
quet strings to maintain tension and playability longer. Ashaway's trademarked Power Filament
Technology (PFT™) jackets on multifilament nylon core strings add power, improve tension hold-
ing, and increase string durability. A textured surface on the wear layer also increases grip and
maximizes ball control and spin potential.

Developed in response to player demand for a thinner gauge PFT based string, professional
play-testers report that the new SuperNick ZX
Micro provides a more precise touch than its sister
string, and being thinner, provides better control
and spin potential as well.

Solid black in color, SuperNick ZX Micro is avail-

able in 9-meter (30 foot) sets, as well as 110-me-
ter (360 foot) reels. Recommended stringing ten-
sion is up to 35 lbs. (16 kgs.).

K-Swiss introduces their new Knitshot Shoe
K-Swiss Knitshot Tech details
Upper:
The difference between our knit upper and other brand’s knit uppers is that the
high abrasion material is knitted directly into the upper as opposed to having a polyurethane mate-
rial molded on top of the knit.
The Medial toe area is knitted using a material called Ultra-high modulus Polyethylene. The mate-
rial is currently supplied by a German company but UHMP was originally commercialized by the
Dutch Chemical company DSM.
The material has very high abrasion resistanceHas very high tensile strength (won’t break easily
under tension)Low elasticity (doesn’t stretch)Low moisture absorption (won’t absorb sweat)High
strength to weight ratio (8-15 times the strength to weight ratio of steel)
Fibers are used in things like: Body armor, Vehicle armor, Climbing equipment, Fishing line, Para-
chutes
The material is very strong. During the manufacturing process, after the upper is knitted, the pat-
tern is cut out using a laser instead of the traditional steel cutting die because the material dulls the
steel blades more quickly than traditional materials.

The FURY, the beginning of a new era.

The release of the Propulse FURY was a year-end highlight for Babolat carried by a renowned
ambassador and a collaborative project with the stores.
Starting in 2003, Babolat has been developing shoes for 13 years. From the first Team All Court to
the Propulse worn by Andy Roddick in 2007, to the Propulse FURY launched this November
Babolat’s developing expertise and persistent fieldwork has allowed the introduction of a truly
innovative product.

The Propulse FURY is designed for players looking for optimal support, a shoe that allows players
to fully engage in every change of direction on all surfaces without any restraint. The stakes are
especially high as the Propulse and its different versions have marked and will continue to mark
the history of the brand. As such, the development of the shoe centered on the feeling of security
and a desire to reinforce stability. This is also why the FURY already has a renowned ambassador
in Benoît Paire. The French player is very proud to succeed the American Andy Roddick in this
role.

As has been the case with the previous models, the focus has been on stability. The true novelty
of the FURY is a different sensation we researched thanks to an integrated insock that fully wraps
the foot. “And through the lacing, we use the straps that tighten and maintain (rigidity) more or less
according to the morphology of the foot and the preferences of the player,” says Julien Alberti,
R&D project leader of the Propulse FURY.

Successful 2016 for

Head tennis
HEAD tennis players are looking back on quite a successful and dominating
year with 8 out of 9 ATP Masters event titles, 3 out of 4 Grand Slam titles and
two players finishing the season on the top of the Emirates ATP Ranking.
When looking back on 2016, two names keep popping up: Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.
Andy finished the year not only as the season-ending World’s No. 1 player, but was able to cap
his season with the 2016 Barclays ATP World Tour Final title, defended his gold medal at the Rio
2016 Olympic Games, won the 2016 Wimbledon tournament and captured 3 ATP Masters Event
titles. Novak, on the other hand, defended his Australian Open title, successfully won his first ever
French Open tournament and won 4 ATP Masters Event titles, to finish the year as the World’s No.
2 tennis player. Marin Cilic captured the Cincinnati Masters title and the 8th out of 9th ATP Masters
event for HEAD. Finally all three top HEAD players made it to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
and once more showed the dominance of the HEAD team by qualifying with 3 out of 8 singles
players.
With Next Gen players Sascha Zverev and Taylor Fritz, named “ATP Star of Tomorrow,” ready to
join the big leagues, 2017 already looks to be another interesting and successful season for HEAD
Tennis and its players.

Recovery Steps
RECOVERY STEPS

Wether you're a weekend warrior, a junior player or a professional, movement is fundamental to

have fun or to win. But as anybody can tell you, the recovery after the shot is what makes the dif-
ference between hitting the ball early or late. That's why it is important to know the basics, what
step to use after hitting a shot and how to move with minimum effort to maximize the effectiveness
of our position on the court to execute the next shot.

Moving well on the court isn't a gift reserved just for the talented few. There is a simple way that
can be learned, and studying and practicing the techniques can be very rewarding even if you
don't have the ambition to be next Nishikori. Start practicing these easy techniques during your
private lessons, workouts or matches and you will find your game improving.
17

Recovery Steps
DRILL ONE SHUFFLE STEP

Objectives:
1- To maximize recovery from close to the center of the court by using a shuffle step.
2- Minimum effort, maximum result.

Execution:
1- Fed ball or life ball drill.
2- After hitting the ball, forehand or backhand, when the position of the body is relatively close to
the center of the court.
3- The player takes one or two shuffle steps to recover. The player can't bounce up and down.
4- The player is always facing the court to keep the balance and control.

Recovery Steps
DRILL TWO CROSS OVER STEP

Objectives:
1- To recover after hitting a s
hot and being close to the singles line using a cross over step.
2- The cross over step helps the player with the lateral speed and quickness.
3- It is a key component as a defensive skill, enhances the ability to change direction.
4- Very effective for short distances.

Execution:
1- After hitting the ball, the player can stop quickly and accelerate quickly maintaining the balance.
2- On the cross over step, the hips open up and the shoulders square to the opponent.
3- When the player comes to a stop, they have to reposition their feet fast, pushing of the back leg
and crossing over on the opposite direction.
4- After crossing over once, then they shuffle to the center of the court.

Recovery Steps
DRILL THREE TURN AND RUN

Objectives:
1- Turn and run, it is used when the player has lost his position on the court and is far away from
the center of the court.
2- This movement is used when the player needs to recover a longer distance.

Execution:
1- After hitting the ball and being outside the singles line.
2- The player turns with the hips and upper body facing the direction he is running, the center of
the court.
3- After turning the hips the player should take a drop step, this way he can cover more court.
4- The player recovers by running two to three steps and then he turns and shuffles, he needs to
be facing the opponent before he makes contact with the ball.

Recovery Steps
DRILL FOUR MOGUL STEP

Objectives:
1- The mogul step is used especially on hard courts when the player has been pulled wide.
2- This step will allow the player to hit the ball while recovering at the same time.

Execution:
1- When the player has been pulled wide, either to the forehand or backhand.
2- The player hits the ball open stands, as he or she is hitting the ball his or her feet are in the air.
3- The player keeps his or her center of gravity, giving him or her control over the body.
4- This movement will allowed the player to break and to change direction to the middle of the
court.
5- When the player lands, open stance on the inside leg and then he or she pushes off with the
outside leg to start the recovery, making this step very efficient.

String Playtest - Tennis
Poly Tour AIR
Yonex Introduces new Poly Tour Air

Yonex introduced Poly Tour Air, their latest addition to their line of top polyesters in the last
issue of RacquetTech. A “HR-Elastomer” is built into the string enhances shock-resistance and
repulsion. This allows players to hit powerful shots while reducing the impact on one’s arm.
Material: Polyester, HR-Elastomer

Gauge: 1,25 mm
Length: 12 m or 200 m
Color: sky blue

In the lab
We tested the POLY TOUR AIR 1.25 . The coil measured 13.0 meters. The diameter measured
1.25-1.28 mm prior to stringing, and 1.24-1.26 mm after stringing. We recorded a stringbed stiff-
ness of 37 Dynamic Tension on a Beers ERT 300 immediately after stringing at 25 kilos in a (16 ×
19 pattern)racquet on a Yonex ES5 Protech.
After 24 hours (no playing), stringbed stiffness measured 35 RDC units, representing a 5.5 percent
tension loss. Our control string, Prince Synthetic Gut Original Gold 16, representing a 9 percent
tension loss. The POLY TOUR AIR 1.25 added 17 grams to the weight of our unstrung frame. The
string has a dry, smooth feeling The ERT tests were in the above average range for this type of
string.
The string was tested for five weeks by 24 ERSA playtesters, with playing levels of intermediate to
nationally ranked. These are blind tests, with playtesters receiving unmarked strings in unmarked
packages. Average number of hours playtested was 9.1.

Stringing
No playtester broke his sample during stringing, and many the stringers said the string had a high
coil memory, typical with single sets of polyester string, although
many said it was no problem with stringing. No one had problems
with friction burn. No problems were reported tying knots. All rated it
as a little more difficult to a little easier to string than other strings in
this category.

Playtest
Tension Loss was rated from a little worse
to somewhat better from everyone. This
was lower than our lab tests. All of the
testers found the string a little below aver-
age to very good in Playability. Power was

String Test
rated a little less to a little better. String movement and
control were rated from average to much better. Com-
fort and Feeling were rated a little lower to much better
for strings in this category. Durability was rated from
average to a much better than the strings they currently
use. Three testers broke thier strings between 6 and 11 hours of play.

Conclusion
YONEX Poly Tour AIR 1.25 is a great string for players looking for a soft poly that is easy on the
arm. The string has good Spin Potential, good Power and averageTension Loss. This is typical for
softer polys. They seem to soften up quicker when hitting hard shots. This string should be
recommended to hard hitting club players players to tournament players looking for a softer string
with more spin, control and durability than a nylon string.
Most of the testers said they would consider adding the string to their sortiment.

Comments
“It played really great for three or four hours then seemed to loose
power.”
“I would recommend it to players looking changing from a nylon to
poly string. It is kind of between them offering more comfort.”
“A little soft compared to my Alu Power, but seemed easy on the arm.”
“It was very comfortable for a poly but seemed to lack some power.”
“I found the spin very good and the strings snapped back so I did not
have to straighten them.”
