well to the phrase “have fun,” because it

The ‘16-Second Cure’

Sports psychologist Jim Loehr devel-
oped something he calls the “16-second
cure,” which offers a sequence to deal
with anxiety. It starts with physically
moving away from the spot of the
error, stepping several feet behind
the baseline, and then shaking out the
dominant arm to relax the muscles. The
player then prepares for the next point
by walking to the baseline with strong,
confident body language, and finishes
the prep with an established ritual.
Once juniors know these strategies,
coaches can put them into practice by
setting up short games in pressure situ-
ations, such as a tiebreak that starts at
5–5, and have the player slow down and
concentrate on the game plan. Put the

Keys to Sales Success

There are three key elements needed to
be successful at sales and player reten-
tion, and a successful tennis pro needs
to be effective in all three:
1. Product Knowledge. A successful
tennis pro must thoroughly under-
stand every aspect of the product they
are selling. Obviously, there are many
aspects to understand about teaching
tennis. Because of this, we won’t be

an honest assessment of your strengths

RSI: What do you feel are the most
important issues facing community
and recreational tennis right now?
Dowse: The most significant issue we
face is the macro issue of inactivity and
the sedentary culture so prevalent in
this country. Our primary challenge is
getting people to trade couch time for
court time.
All of tennis’ constituents need to
help support the broader challenges
of inactivity. To that end, we need to
address getting physical education back

initiatives to get kids active. Specific

that would be a real key to creating a

I believe parks are the top of the fun-

The Theory of Non-Embarrassment
states that a player swinging with
insufficient upward racquet trajectory
and insufficient upward racquet
velocity will instinctively open the
racquet face. This is because in the
last few hundredths of a second
before impact, the player’s brain
subconsciously realizes the ball is
going to go into the net and they
instinctively adjust, opening the
racquet face to avoid embarrassment,
even though this emergency
adjustment can send the ball
screaming toward the fence. Thus,
the higher the skill level, the less the
player hits through the ball.

simple coaching take-aways:

1. Be mindful that the lower the

racquet is below the impact,
the greater the available
distance to build upward
racquet velocity and to create
the friction necessary for
topspin and ball elevation over
the net.

2. Data show the best pro players

16 inches below impact, which
is about one and a half racquet
head widths. A coach can
focus on this point just before
contact to ascertain that the
racquet comes from 16 inches
below the ball. Feedback is
important, as the student often
times will not feel this without
practice and guidance.

3. High-level players must hit

Data show a direct correllation between the upward trajectory of a stroke and the sufficiently hard to succeed,
skill level of the player. The steeper the stroke, generally, the better the player.
