An Axiomαtizαtion of the Equivαlentiαl

Fragment of the Three-Valued Logic
of Lukasiewicz

JACEK K. KABZINSKI

The problem of axiomatizing the purely equivalential fragment of the

infinite-valued /Lukasiewicz logic (Loo) and the corresponding variety of al-
gebras remains open. Moreover for every n = 3, 4 , . . . one may ask about ax-
iomatization of the purely equivalential fragment of ^-valued Lukasiewicz logic
(Ln). In this paper we give an axiomatization of the purely equivalential frag-
ment of L3 and an appropriate set of identities determining the corresponding
variety of algebras (see [3]).
Let us recall that the three-valued logic of-Lukasiewicz L3 is determined by
the following matrix: L3 = ({0,1,2}, {0}, ->L, Λ L , V L , ~ L ) where x-*L y =
max(0,y-x)9 XΛL y = max(x,y), xvL y = min(x,y), and ~Lx = x-+L 2
(see [5]).
The other well-known three-valued logic is the logic H3 considered by
Heyting in [1]. It is determined by the matrix H3 = ({0,1,2}, {0}, ->H,
Λ
//> v//> ~H)> where X-*H y=y whenever x<y and X-+H y — Q otherwise,
x/\Hy = max(x,y), xvHy = min(x,y), and ~Hx = x-»H2.
Ξ
Let the symbols L3 and //3 denote the purely equivalential fragments in
question. Since x = y -df (x^y) Λ (y -+x) then Lf and Hf are determined by
the following matrices L3Ξ and W3 respectively: L3Ξ = ({0,1,2}, {0}, =L) where
x=L y = max(x-y,y-x) and H3Ξ = ({0,1,2}, {0}, =H) where x=H y =
max(x,y) whenever x ψ y and x =H y — 0 otherwise.
It is known that neither L3 £H3 nor H3£L3; for example (a-+(a-+β))-+
(a^β)GH3-L3 whereas ((a-+β)^>β)-+((β-+a)-+a) GL3-H3. Never-
theless we shall prove that the purely equivalential fragments of L2 and H3 are
identical.
The equality Lf = Hf is an immediate consequence of the fact that the
matrices Lf and Hf are isomorphic. The reader will have no difficulty in
verifying that the required isomorphism is the mapping /: {0,1,2} -• {0,1,2},
such that ι(0) = 0, /(I) = 2, ι(2) = 1.

EQUIVALENTIAL FRAGMENT OF LUKASIEWICZ'S LOGIC 355

The notion of intuitionistic equivalential algebra introduced in [2] (see

also [4]) is an algebraic counterpart of the equivalential fragment of the intui-
tionistic propositional logic. This fragment was axiomatized by Tax in [6] by
means of the single axiom

(TA) (03 s (0 s a)) s ((/J s (0 = a)) « (a = (a = (γs δ ) ) ) ) )

= ((αsj) == (γsα))

and the following rules of inference:

α
(DR) "" (the detachment rule for the equivalence)
β

<TR> τ—£— <the Tax rule>

The class of intuitionistic equivalential algebras was defined in [2] as the
variety of all algebras of type <2> satisfying the following identities:
(11) (a = a) = b = b
(12) ((β = i)=c)Ξc=(flΞc)Ξ(J = c)
(l3) ((a Ξ i ) Ξ ( ( f l Ξ C ) Ξ C ) ) Ξ ( ( f l Ξ C ) Ξ C ) = f l Ξ b.

The variety of algebras corresponding to the equivalential fragment of the

logic H3 has already been axiomatized in [4] by the identities (il), (i2), (i3), and
(hi) (((a E ( ( 4 S C ) S C ) ) B ((b s c ) s c ) ) = ((βs ((c s 6)Ξ b)) s
((cΞ6)ΞZ?)))Ξ((βrΞ(&Ξc))Ξ(6Ξc))=α
(h2) (α * (((6 s c) s c) s 6)) s (((6 s c) s c) = b) = a.

On the basis of axioms of the variety of intuitionistic equivalential algebras

the identities (hi), (h2) are equivalent to the one identity
(h) (a = (b s c)) = (b s c) = (a s ((α s 6)s 6)) s ((αΞ c ) s c).
A routine proof will be omitted.
Since just the same variety corresponds to the equivalential fragment of the
logic L 3 , one gets the following:
Corollary The identities (il), (i2), (i3), (h)form an axiomatization of the va-
riety determined by L^.
The results of Tax [6] combined with our corollary yield the following:
Theorem Lψ can be axiomatized by adopting (TA), (DR), (TR), and the
following axiom: ((a s (β = 7 ) ) = (β sε 7 ) ) = ( ( α = ( ( « = β) = /?)) =
( ( α S 7 ) S 7
) ) .
