Purpose
The purpose of this investigation is to gather and analyze experimental observations to determine the
rate dependence of a reactant in a chemical system.

Question
What is the order of reaction with respect to the initial concentration of iodate ions in the iodine clock
reaction?
The order of the iodate is 2.

Prediction
Predict qualitatively what will happen to the time of reaction as the initial concentration of iodate ions is
increased. What will happen to the rate of reaction?
When the concentration increases, the time will decrease, as with more concentration less time
is needed to do the lab. Since the time decreases the rate of the reaction will increase.
1
Therefore, concentration  Rate  𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
Analysis
Calculate the initial concentration of iodate solution in each of the wells at the instant of mixing with an
equal volume of Solution B.
I used the formula shown below in order to calculate the concentration
𝐶 = 𝑛𝑉
# 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑠
𝐶 = 𝑛 ( 20 )

Make a general statement to summarize your qualitative observations.

1
I concluded that concentration  𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 , as time will increase when you have more
concentration.

Make appropriate evidence tables and plot graphs to identify the order of the reaction with respect to
concentration of iodate ions.

Write an expression to answer the Question.

Rate = k[IO3-]2

Evaluation
What other variables, apart from initial bisulfite ion concentration, were controlled in this investigation?
The dilation of the concentration was controlled and so was the volume.

Evaluate the Experimental Design, your lab skills, and the Evidence. Suggest any ways in which this
experiment could be improved.
The experiment can be improved by having the same induvial mixing each solution, the same
individual timing, and the same individual preparing the lab, in order to get the most accurate
results, and avoid errors. In addition, make sure, that Solution B (HSO3) is made fresh, so the
reaction occurs quickly, and is more accurate.

If you are confident in your Evidence, evaluate the Prediction that you made before starting the
investigation.
From this reaction, I can conclude that my prediction was correct as
1
concentration  Rate  𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒

Synthesis
Why was it important to add specific volumes of water to the wells in micro tray A?
It is important to add a specific amount of volume since, adding more or less drops will make the
reaction inconsistent and therefore, results will not be accurate.
