Watching the leaves fall and the nights draw in is an opportunity to think about life and loss and re-birth. November is in particular a time to remember those who have lost their lives tragically and sacrificially through war and conflict. So we enter now this month a special time of year — a time to remember, a time to grieve for losses we have suffered but also a time to celebrate. To celebrate those who have lived and loved and whose presence we now see no longer. Being British we don't talk about death very much! However, if we have suffered loss, and most of us have, then it's important that we have ways of openly being able to acknowledge our pain and find ways to help one another through it. Children, who don't have the same kind of inhibitions we develop as adults, tend to ask questions about death for all kinds of reasons. It may come from seeing a local war memorial, or closer to home with the death of a pet. Or maybe your child has lost a great-grandparent, grandparent, a family friend, a neighbour, an aunt or uncle. For some children, the impact of loss has huge consequences, especially if it's the death of a parent or a sibling. However and whenever those questions come, there are good ways to remember those we see no longer with family at home: + Light a candle on important days and say a prayer. “Loving God, thank you for _ help us to remember them well.” This is a simple prayer to say together. + Gather some items that remind you of that person — letters they wrote, photos of them, and keep them in a box. Children can add things to the box + Encourage children to help tend a special memorial place such as the graveside or a special spot in your garden at home — pulling weeds, choosing flowers washing a memorial stone, etc The church also has ways of remembering. There are two special services held in November each year. Remembrance Sunday which falls on 10” November this year when services are held in churches up and down the land to remember those who have died in wars, and to pray for peace Also, usually around the start of November on All Souls’ Day, we hold a special memorial service to remember those we have personally loved in our lives who are no longer with us. This service is a celebration of the time we were able to enjoy with them, a celebration of their love and of the joy they brought to us. For whilst there is no greater pain than losing someone dear to us none of us would wish that we could avoid that pain by never having known them. This year’s Celebration of Life service will be on Sunday 3 November 3pm in Gayton Church Itis always very moving and there will be an opportunity during the service for everyone to light acandle in special remembrance of your loved ones. All are welcome. A month later | can report copious amounts of the wet stuff falling, nearly six inches, split between the last half of September and first half of October. Most annoyingly, this includes three consecutive wet Sundays, which the good lady finds most bothersome as, with everyone at home including four of Jake's large paws in and out all day, her kitchen floor is forever having to be mopped. My dear old Mother always said that a clean house could only be achieved by keeping the kitchen floor spotless - this she managed by introducing me to the mop and bucket very early in my youth! That's the time to teach them, she said, as she lit up another Players’ fag and drank another gin and orange They've been lifting spuds up at Lanky Hill and transporting them to Gayton Farm for grading and then delivery to a nearby processing factory. | went up to the field yesterday to check on their progress. Returning, | passed Jeremy Mason's newly converted “Lanky Hill Barn’, designed to be swallow and house martin friendly. This it certainly is! Flying between the barn and electric wires were several mature and happy swallows, This now being mid-October, they should have migrated some time ago. Has anybody seen the like locally? | have just discovered that our schools start half term this Friday. | always thought that this coincided with Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night? Then, of course, | was at boarding school, which started the Autumn term later. I's for certain that Christmas will be here soon. This I'm reminded of when driving up Gayton Road past the Wildfowler pub, which has been advertising Christmas lunch since September. Now that's an interesting building. | can just remember it being the farmhouse for Mr de Grey Seaman's herd of black and white Friesian cows. These were walked up to fields and back again twice a day for milking. In those days, there was no Fairstead Estate or Queen Elizabeth Hospital or bypass — just fields which were his right up to Knight's Hill! This was in the early 1960's Well, it could happen that this year England win the World Cup of cricket and also rugby - we are just three games away from this achievement in Japan at the moment. This reminds me of a little story to finish with, concerning my cricket playing career. Annually, a group of us played against a side from near Holt and every year we lost, simply because their no.4 batsman was just too good for us. One year we devised a plan to distract his concentration! On the fall of their second wicket, out marched Holt's star, resplendent in MCC attire. He was confident, as usual. His partner at the wicket was soon out and, at this moment, our plan was sprung. Out to join him was not the no.5 batsman, but a young lady, not quite properly dressed, wearing high heeled shoes and not much else. She walked up to the hero and promptly embraced him. From a distance, our side assumed he would now certainly fail and the game would be won. Alas no, for, recovering his thoughts, the young lady was dismissed from the field of play with a well directed waft of his bat. Then carefully repairing the wicket where her high heels had caused damage, he resumed his innings, scored a hundred runs and again won the match! Our only job then was to pay off the lady (double pay as it was Sunday) and again admit defeat! She also thanked everyone who had contributed to the Show's success by helping on the day or had donated prizes and sold Raffle tickets. She welcomed Dave Cole who was representing the charity Nelson’s Journey and on our behalf presented a cheque for £2,000 to help bereaved children in Norfolk, from money raised by members at the Show and during the year. Mr Cole started by saying that any donation, however small was welcome, but that this donation was beyond his expectations. He proceeded to talk about what could be achieved with the money. His gratitude was evident. We would like to thank everyone who helped us raise this amount. Mr Johnny Walker from Taylor's Bulbs then gave his talk about the trials and tribulations of setting up a show stand for the major horticultural shows of the year, along with a talk and slides following the development of the daffodil and the many variations available. The meeting was very well attended and Mr Walker brought a large selection of bulbs for members to purchase. Cynthia Jackson gave the vote of thanks. One of our school development priorities for the autumn term is to improve progression in art skills throughout the school. As part of this project, children in Kittiwakes (Year 1 and 2) and Avocets (Year 3 and 4) visited the ‘Stories of Lynn’ museum to take part in two very different art days, with the connecting themes of buildings as treasure. Both classes toured King’s Lynn, observed some of the wonderful buildings and discovered stories about them. Back at the museum, Kittiwakes recreated the buildings through the medium of printing and box modelling; lots of mess and great fun was had by all! Avocets developed their understanding of landscape, inspired by the work of local artist Walter Dexter. They also explored still-life pieces and recreated one of the paintings in the museum in oil pastel. Back at school, each class have put together a group composition, again based on the theme of buildings as treasure. We have a Taj Mahal, a London ‘landmarks’ scene and St Botolph’s Church so far! Throughout November, children in all year groups will be producing art work for a school competition. Three winning pieces from each class will be displayed in an exhibition the gallery at West Acre Theatre. It was lovely to meet some of the children and families who are hoping to join us in 2020 during our open day recently. If you were unable to attend the open day and have a child due to start school in September 2020 please contact the school office on 01485 600241 to make an appointment to come and see our super school in action Jennie Wildsmith-Garton Headteacher Village Link | 23 ARMIGER LANDSCAPE SERVICES Garden Maintenance & Clearing Hedge Cutting + Lawn Mowing Fencing « Turling * Patio Laying Ring Andy 07554641405 + 01485 298611 ‘andygosS5@yahoo.com SCRAP METAL WANTED Rubbish Cleared Away Lawns & Hedges Cut Call Chris on 07557 530465 VERY REASONABLE RATES Grimston Village Hall CLIFFE-EN-HOWE ROAD POTT ROW Telephone Hillington 600440 Registered Charity 303963 Flitcham Primary Academy 01485 600383 sicher, The Sandringham Federation of Schools ‘Live Together, Learn Together, Play Together’ = * ‘Small Classes Excellent Results Good Ofsted Stunning Rural Location Wrap around care 8am-5:20pm Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy 01485 540506, pot, Flitcham Fledglings Nursery from age 3 with qualifying government 15 and 30 hour funding Places available — please contact us to look around either setting MOBILE HAIRDRESSING Helen Tel. 01485 600901 or 0777 5514 572 ReB TURF & GROUNDCARE MACHINERY SPECIALISTS Servicing and Repairs to all makes of Lawnmowers ~ Ride-ons Garden Machinery Tel: 01485 540645 www.randbmowermen-d.co.uk WE MEND ~ YOU MOW From fr.
