Hi everyone, how are you doing ?

I hope, you all are doing well. Blessed in everything, in abundance as well.

Today’s video is to share you information on coaching programs for inmates in Prison. Every prison
throughout Indonesia carries out various coaching programs for prisoners which aimed to change their
lives and improve themselves so they stand a better chance avoiding a return visit as well as accepted
back to the community. Based on corrections system regulation in Indonesia, there are 2 (two) types of
coaching programs for inmates namely personality and self-help coaching. Personality is more directed
at fostering the character and mental of prisoners including activities in the fields of religion, sports,
intellectuals, national and state awareness. While self-help fostering is directed at providing provision of
prisoners' talents and skills including training in work skills such as farming, sewing, furniture, laundry
service and handicrafts.

This time, we want you to get to know more about the activities of self-help fostering for inmates
through making “Nyatu Sap” handicrafts at Rutan Kelas II a Palangka Raya. Previously, we want to make
sure you know in advance what it is “Nyatu sap” craft.

“Nyatu sap” handicraft is one of the Dayak cultural treasures that was born from local wisdom. For those
of you who have visited the Province of Central Kalimantan, Palangka Raya city, you definitely know the
popularity of this craft as souvenirs. The sap from “Nyatu tree” that grows in the tropical rain forests of
Kalimantan can be processed into a variety of unique and beautiful souvenirs. From the hands of the
young Inmates in Rutan Palangka Raya, this craft is created to many kinds of miniature with high
economic value such as pencil/pen case, key chains, wall displays, and stuff.

There are several stages in making process to become a high-value craft like this:

1. Preparing raw materials purchased from local sap farmers.

2. The next stage is cutting, because the texture of this raw material is very hard so it has to use an ax to
cut it into pieces.

3. Then, the sap that has been cut is cleaned. The remnants of soil / wood impurities attached to the sap
are cleaned by boiling them in a rice cooker for 2 hours.

4. After boiling, the raw material becomes elastic like rubber so it’s easy to clean and flatten by trampling
it with feet.

5. The next stage is coloring. Some of the pieces were given natural dyes which must involve 5 elements
of Central Kalimantan's cultural philosophy, namely yellow, red, green, white, and black. Raw materials
and dyes are mixed together, pressed with both hands until it becomes a dough and divided into various
parts of various colors.
6. After that, the dough is formed as creatively as possible by the young inmates by using
environmentally friendly tools such used soft drink bottles, bamboo materials instead of plastic that take
too long to decompose in landfills. All is to support the "zero/less waste" campaign which teach them to
be more aware, conscious of the environment.

besides creating a variety of dayak crafts for instance ; boats, key chains, Dayak statue, and wall
decorations, the goods form can also be adjusted to the requests/demands of consumers and markets.

The work of Rutan Palangka Raya’s craftsman has attracted domestic and foreign consumers. Some
buyers from abroad are willing to package the "Batang Garing" wall display to be brought to their
country as an ethnic home decoration. In addition, the sap of Nyatu handicraft and the making process is
often demonstrated in several regional and national exhibition events such as Central Kalimantan
Exhibition to the Prisoners' Superior Product Exhibition in Jakarta and successfully won several
categories of competitions for two consecutive years.

Equipping inmates with skills is a win-win solution program for prisoners, organizations and the
community. The programs help prisoners adjust back to regular life and earn a living once they are
released from prison. The repetition of crime (recidivism) will be reduced, they will not commit anymore
crimes and become law abiding citizens, thus changing societal perceptions of their past. Their
contribution to the preservation of Central Kalimantan's cultural heritage in particular and the country's
economic growth in general should be supported and appreciated.

Through this video, we also let the the world know that coaching programs for prisoners to preserve
their homeland culture still face several obstacles, especially facilities and infrastructure. Thus we need a
more partnership, wider networking with all parties to support, empower, and develop inmates with
skills to compete in the global market.

Allright, that’s it !

Thank you for watching.
