The Carrot and Stick Approach of Motivation is a traditional motivation theory that asserts, in motivating

people to elicit desired behaviours, sometimes the rewards are given in the form of money, promotion, and
any other financial or non-financial benefits and sometimes the punishments are exerted to push an
individual towards the desired behaviour.
So today will show you what Simon thinks about manipulation, which is considered as a shadow of the
Carrot and Stick Approach, and how leadership is the key to inspire your followers.

Simon believes that true leadership means having the ability to inspire people, to provide them with a
purpose outside of any benefits or incentives. There is no manipulation or coercion, followers are inspired
and feel fulfilled by the work that they do.
According to Simon, behaviour is influenced in two ways; inspiration, or manipulation.

Today, we are more familiar with manipulation. Sales, promotions, advertising, marketing, it’s all versions
of manipulations. And there’s a reason for this, manipulation simply works!
Using the example of attracting customers to purchase a product you are selling; it’s prices, promotions,
fear, aspirations, novelty and peer pressure that are used to manipulate and motivate a purchase. Although
these techniques may help you make a sale, they do not benefit any long-term gains. In other words, they
do not encourage loyalty.

For example, merchandisers often reduce their prices to attract customers. Hence customers become
habitual of paying fewer prices. And so, they do not want to pay the full price.
Some companies offer promotions rather than dropping prices. For example, two for the price of one. Or
buy 1 get another at 50% off.

Another dangerous example; Is when Many public-service announcements and even ads use “fear”.
Consider the famous 1980s ad that featured an egg being cracked into a pan. The message said, “this is your
brain (the egg). This is your brain on drugs (eggs burning). Any questions?” Fear is the strongest
manipulator.

So now I’ll let my college Osama explain more about these forms of manipulation and their impacts in the long-
term.
