FLOAT YOUR BOAT
I.Objective/s
 To develop the competitiveness and teamwork among the students
II. Requirements
Enrolled in BSCE Program
III. Composition of the Quiz Team
1. Each team consists of three (3) members.
2. Registration is until February 22, 2019.
3. Participants must register through online.
IV. Resources
(1) 1-foot ruler
pair of scissors
meters of tape
(10) Popsicle Sticks
Main material to be used (TBA in the event proper)
V. Mechanics
1. Each team will be given 3 hours to create their desired boat.
2. All teams will start at the same time and after 3 hours, whether the team is finished or not, it will
undergo into the screening process.
3. The boat must be constructed to float for the longest period and at the same time to carry loads
that will be put by one of the member of the team.
NOTE:
RESOURCES will be provided and should be the ONLY materials to be used to build the boat to
confirm that they haven’t brought extra resources.
Bonuses may be given at the middle of boat making proper.

Boat specification:
400mm ≤ Length (L) ≤ 550mm
(end to end of the boat laid on a flat surface)
150mm≤ Width (W) ≤ 200mm
(side to side of the boat laid on a flat surface)
Height (H) ≤ 150mm
(Bottom to top of the boat laid on a flat surface)
Screening Process
Phase I: Prequalification Screening
Each boat must pass the required boat specifications before it is accepted for the next phase. A
boat will not be able to proceed for next phase if:
Did not reach the required minimum boat length (L)
Exceeded the maximum boat length (L)
Exceeded the maximum boat width (W)
Exceeded the maximum boat height (H)
Other material aside from the RESOURCES given was used.
Phase Ii: Load Prediction
Teams who passed the screening are required to give their MAXIMUM LOAD
PREDICTION
Phase Iii: Boat Floating
Load will be applied inside the boat with a constant difference and a 5 second delay before
the next load is applied
If the boat fails at the nth load applied, the total load applied will be the last placed load
before it failed.

The boat will be considered FAILED if:

The boat sinks
Total Destruction
VI. Criteria For Judging
I. Aesthetics
a) The Boat that topped the ranking percentage conforming to the given criteria:
o Symmetry in form and Design 40%
o Difficulty of the boat model 30%
o Neatness of the boat 30%
Total: 100%
Ii. Duration
a) The boat with the longest period of time to float in the water without destruction.
Iv. Overall
a) Team’s grade for AESTHETIC will be converted into points (e.g. AESTHETIC Grade = 90%
Equivalent to 9 points)
b) For the Duration, the team with longest duration time will get 10 points while the others will have a
deduction of 0.5 points based on their rankings.
c) The team with the highest overall score will be declared as champion.
VII. Prizes
Best in Aesthetics: Certificate of Recognition + Cash Prize
Champion: Medals + Certificate of Recognition + Medal + Cash Prize
1st Runner-up: Certificate of Recognition + Cash Prize
2nd Runner-up: Certificate of Recognition + Cash Prize

Tower Building
I. Objectives
to use the materials provided to construct a tall tower
II. Requirements
 Accomplished online registration form
III. Composition of the Quiz Team
1. Each team consists of five (5) members.
2. Registration is until February 22, 2019.
3. Participants must register through online.
IV. Materials

 Rubber bands
 Chicken sticks
 5 banana que sticks
V. Mechanics

 Using the materials provided, construct your tower, using teamwork.

 Strength testing: One by one, each tower is subjected to testing. A student group adds
standardized weight in the form of magazines, one at a time, to the top of the tower. Once the
tower fails—falls over, breaks or is otherwise unable to support the magazines—the test is over.
The number of magazines that the tower supported, immediately prior to tower failure, is the
number recorded as the maximum magazines held. Recording weight: Since all magazines used
are identical, record the weight of one magazine, and multiply that by the number of magazines
that the tower held prior to failing. Selecting a winner: The competition winner is determined based
on the strength-to-weight ratio of the tower. Light towers that hold a lot of magazines have higher
strength-to-weight ratios.
 Tie-breakers: In case of a tie, the lighter tower wins.
VI. Criteria For Judging
o Strength 70%
o Aesthetic 15%
o Height 15%
Total: 100%

Calculating the weight-to-strength ratio:

1. Using a gram scale, typically used in kitchens to measure flour, weigh the tower.
tower weight = ___________ grams
2. Begin adding magazines (that are all identical) to the top of the tower, one at a time, until the
tower fails. Keep count of the number of magazines added.
Number of magazines added = ________ magazines
3. Weigh one of the magazines using a gram scale, and record its weight.
Individual magazine weight = _________ grams
4. Calculate the strength-to-weight ratio using the following equation:
𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐 = [𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭] × [𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬] ÷ [𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭]
Magazine weight was recorded in 3, the number of magazines was recorded in 2, and the
straw tower weight was recorded in 1.
Our initial tower’s strength-to-weight ratio = _______________
Our final tower’s strength-to-weight ratio = _______________
VII. Prizes
Best in Aesthetics: Certificate of Recognition + Cash Prize
Champion: Medals + Certificate of Recognition + Medal + Cash Prize
1st Runner-up: Certificate of Recognition + Cash Prize
2nd Runner-up: Certificate of Recognition + Cash Prize
