Many laws have been designed to protect an individual’s personal healthcare

records. Every patient has the right to their own healthcare information, to have

their information disclosed between healthcare providers and used with caution in

the best interest of the patient and have the right to privacy ("Important Laws,"

n.d.). This paper will provide a fact sheet concerning the 21st Century Cures Act

and how it impacts system implementation, clinical care, patient/provider

interaction, and workflow. It will also address the organizations policies and

procedures that are in place.

21st CENTURY CURES ACT

Briefly and generally explain the policy or regulation you selected

The Act was constructed to help advance biomedical innovations and advances to

patients in need more effectively. The 21st Century Cures contains the provisions

relevant to biomedical innovation and looks to make advancements throughout the

entire R&D System ("Important Laws," n.d).

Address the impact of the policy or regulation you selected on system implementation.

The Cures Act had a great impact on system implementation. The Cures Act is

helping transform the way medical product development is supported and

innovated. The Cures Act addresses the entire biomedical innovation system of new

medical products (“Implementing,” 2019).

 Improve the exchange of (EHR) information, improve efficiencies, and speed up

the discovery process.

 Reduces the bureaucracy for drug approval

 Provides the state government with funding to address the opioid crisis

 Improve accuracy to Electronic Medical Record systems

 Help deliver new testing and approval of drugs to patients, at the right time

Address the impact of the policy or regulation you selected on clinical care,

patient/provider interactions, and workflow

The policy impacted clinical care, patient/provider interactions and workflow by:

 Allows pharmaceuticals and device manufacturers to submit real time data for

faster approval

 Interaction is influenced through the transmission of data to and from clinical

registries

 The law provides patients with the rights to their own health information,

while allowing patients information to be shared between providers (Cannatti

III & Gottlieb, 2019)

 The law will help prioritize/coordinate care for the mental health services

ensuring patient get the care they need without duplication and push for

early intervention. Improves the Functionality of the electronic health records

(Byers, 2016)

Highlight organizational policies and procedures that are/will be in place at your

healthcare organization to address the policy or regulation you selected. Be specific.

Organizational Procedures and Policies: To comply with the Cures Act, the

organization will need to be competent in developing and updating policies, in order

to form with the 21st Century Cures Act. Policy considerations, including:

 Promote exchange and sharing of information

 Accurately explain how patients can retrieve their health information

 Set standards for applying the new details and certification rules

 Protection and promotion of patient safety and ensure privacy (Nichol, 2016)

It is necessary for one to be aware of state and federal laws regarding health

informatics, so that Protected Health Information remains safeguarded while being

stored and communicated via electronic health record systems ("Important Laws,"

n.d.). In order to improve patent outcome, experience, and work flow many

changes are going to have to be made to systems and policies. This can all be

accomplished through compliance with the 21st Century Cures Act.
