rant, supports immigrants
“Shane Jones’ comments thankfully will be seen
for what they are, cheap politicking. They reflect
on him more than anyone else in New Zealand,
least of all the Indian community. They may
reflect the fact that he has always been a list MP
who does not hold an electorate.
As an Electorate MP, you represent a constituency.
I represent the Epsom electorate, including
Epsom itself as well as Mt Eden, Parnell,
Newmarket, Greenlane and Remuera. That
means serving all of the approximately 17,000
constituents whether they voted for me or not.
Nearly one-in-ten Epsom electorate residents
identify as Indian, and I’ve got to know and serve
many of them over my five years as the local MP.
Often the issues they bring to my electorate office
relate to immigration. I see what poor treatment
by Immigration New Zealand does. Employers
find themselves without workers they need for
their business to survive, let alone grow. Families
are divided when loved family members cannot
come to New Zealand.
At the moment, most electorate MPs will tell you
that long processing times by Immigration New
Zealand are the number one cause of people
coming through their door.
Helping people driven to despair by Government

also focuses you on how policies work, and how
they should work.

is simple, do we want her to stay in New Zealand,
or not?
If we want the best people to be in New Zealand,
we will allow them to come. They have to have
the skills to make a contribution to the economy.
They have to respect New Zealand’s values, such
as religious freedom and equal rights of all people
before the law. But we can’t afford to discriminate
on basic prejudices such as how people go about
finding their marital partners.
I predict that the Government’s restriction on the
sponsorship of partners from arranged marriages
will only lead to more people coming to the offices
of electorate MPs. Sadly, Shane Jones will be none
the wiser.”

What is the Labour Party Waiting For ?

alliance to the National Party, have
asked Indians to come together for a
public meeting to be held on Sunday,
November 17th at 258, Balmoral Road,
Sandringham. This call for a public
meeting is not just about the comments
made by Shane Jones but to largely
understand the actions, movements,
and policies which are being adopted or
developed by politicians aimed at the
Indian Community in particular and the
Asian Community at large.
By Shane Jones saying that "I'm giving
a voice to the anxieties of hundreds of
thousands of Kiwis who upon learning
we're now reaching 5 million people,
substantially grown by immigration,
they're actually very happy that they
have a voice", he is encouraging the
style of ideology that supports or may
include social aspects such as nativism,
xenophobia, otherness, segregation and
supremacism.
The New Zealand First MP said he is
"worked up" over the "elevated sense
of entitlement from a lot of immigrant
leaders", after some in New Zealand's
Indian community spoke out against the
tightening of the rules. Although it is clear
that the entitlement is more from his side,
citing his descent and bloodline which
shows prejudice, discrimination, and
antagonism directed against the Asian
people because they are of a different race
or ethnicity. These views can take the form
of social actions, practices or beliefs in
political systems where different races are
ranked as inherently superior or inferior
to each other, based on their presumed
shared bloodline, inheritable traits,
abilities, or qualities.
Jones, clearly does not understand the
large implications of these immature
statements which are not worthy of

government as well, since New Zealand
is not a country that has propagated a
fascist style of ideology to win elections

A show of solidarity at Aotea centre
A large group of protesters consisting mainly of Indian
immigrants gathered at Aotea Centre in the afternoon
of Sunday 3rd November to protest, against the racially
discriminatory changes made by Immigration New
Zealand recently. Indians are the worst affected ethnic

demanded an unconditional apology from the minister

first six months after birth. It’s giving
mums the option of three days’ stays
in a hospital or postnatal facility after
they’ve given birth, so they have time
to bond with their baby and help with
breastfeeding.
For dads, it’s ensuring they can take paid
parental leave at the same time as mums,
so the whole family has time together at
the very start. If we can better support
parents at the start of their children’s
lives, we’ll see measurable, positive results
for New Zealanders.
That’s one of the most important
aspects of National’s approach – setting

woes continue
The opposition to the changes made by
Immigration New Zealand on partnership
and parents visa rules, is growing now
and taking a momentum. A protest
march was also taken out in Auckland on
Sunday, by a group of immigrants who
are affected with these changes and many
others who sympathise and support these
immigrants against the racial outburst by
the New Zealand First ministers Winston
Peters and Shane Jones.
The result of this out cry and show of
solidarity against the racial rant by the
NZ First ministers has already started
showing with Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern disassociating herself from
the statement made by the ministers
saying that it’s not the view or opinion
of the government or Labour party and
whatever is said by these two, are their
personal views. Even the Immigration
Minister Iain Lees-Galloway has asked the
Immigration officials to find a solution to
this issue relating to Indian community
on partnership visa, so they are not met
with any unfairly treatment. Actually, it is
understandable that the government is
trying to cap the immigration numbers
into country hence Immigration making
all these stricter rules on parents and
partnership category visas. There is no
problem in making any changes about
immigration rules by any country, but
the changes need to realistic, equal and
fair for all immigrants. Unfortunately,
in this case its neither realistic nor fair
or equal to some ethnicities like Indians
in particular, where traditionally the
marriages are arranged by the parents or
families for a boy or girl.
Normally Indian parents would want
to choose a future partner for their
children from their home country and
from within the community unless the
children have already found someone
locally in New Zealand. So, it is not
be many ways to assess or verify the
validity of these marriages, like by making
marriage certificate mandatory which
can be validated by an Indian court or
any similar competent authority also
asking for the photos and videos of the
marriage ceremonies as an evidence. In
any civilised society of the world usually
the partner or spouse are supposed to live
together when they are married. This is
no brainer and it is just that Immigration
need to apply common sense and be bit
more compassionate about the social
practices of other communities as well.

keep in mind about the social or cultural

they are inviting to New Zealand. The
support that Indian immigrants have
received from some local organisations
is not unprecedented because the similar
practices take place in many other Asian

The government appears to be on shaky
ground on this issue as they fear to lose
its base of traditionally Labour loyal
supporters and voters. Community
people are demanding a public apology
from the minister and also him to resign
as a minister. This is going to be a tough
balancing act for Jacinda to make both
her coalition partners and the Indian
immigrants happy at the same time.
Several Labour loyal members from
Indian community have already left the
party and vowing to teach the Labour
Party a lesson in the election next year in
2020, if the unfair treatment being met to
the community is not stopped.
Government certainly can’t afford to
offend either of the party at this juncture
and must look for a middle path for them.

plant-based diets so as to achieve positive
health results, they might not be reaping
the benefits to the fullest as it is found
that not all plants can do good to you.
In a new study, researchers have found
that all plants aren't good especially
for the undernourished or people who
depend on a single plant diet.
They also cautioned that growing interest
in wild edibles raises the risk for people
in wealthy countries, too, especially as
some plants may become more toxic
with changing climate, according to
the findings published in the journal
Environmental Neurology.
"The bottom line is that plants and
fungi were not put here for our benefit
- they need to defend themselves," said
Peter Spencer, professor of neurology
in the OHSU School of Medicine and an
affiliated faculty member of the Oregon
Institute of Occupational Health Sciences
at OHSU.
In the study, researchers catalogued
a quartet of plants that sicken or kill
undernourished people around the globe.
"The adverse neurological effects of
food dependency on plant components
with toxic potential constitute a
significant global health issue," explained
researchers.
Those in the list of the researchers include
the potential neurotoxic effects of fruit
of the ackee tree, an evergreen native
to West Africa and favourite of Jamaica;
lychee fruit, a delicious tropical fruit from
southern Asia now eaten worldwide; grass
pea, a protein-rich legume eaten on the
Indian continent
and the Horn of
Africa; and cassava,
a plant whose roots
and leaves are
consumed in across
sub-Sahara.
Researchers
elucidate ways in
which they can
rapidly and fatally
affect brain function or, in the case of
cassava and grass pea, gradually induce
crippling disease. This depends on the
amount of plant product consumed along
with the poor health of the people eating
it; and the relative availability of each of
these plants due to poverty, hunger and,
increasingly, climate change.
Many people in Africa rely on cassava as
a primary food source because it grows
well in arid soils. But when stressed by
drought, the concentration of its chemical
defences increase at the same time water
to wash out the toxic factors is in short
supply. Those dependent on cassava
develop an irreversible struggle to walk.
Researchers focused decades of their
research in the field and laboratory on
grass pea, a tasty legume that also causes
tremor, muscle weakness and even
paralysis in those who depend upon it for
sustenance. Unfortunately, Palmer said,
people may well become increasingly
exposed to potentially toxic plants as the
climate warms and the global population
expands, especially in low-income
countries.
"This is very concerning, particularly
because many people are going to need
to rely on these crops in the future," she
said. Spencer believes the "exposome" -
the food we eat, the air we breathe, the
chemicals we are unwittingly exposed to

Taking sustainability to a new level

On a two-acre in England’s Mids., Gavin
and Alice Munro are taking sustainability
to the next level: they harvest trees which

Derbyshire where they are nurturing 250

answer to what they see as the inefficient
