Presenter Today is the 6th of February – and I have Jade with me in the

Presenter What is special about today for you?
Jade Well, I live in England, but I’m from New Zealand. And today we
celebrate Waitangi Day – it’s a holiday in New Zealand.
Presenter What do you do on Waitangi Day?
Jade Well, the 6th of February is in the winter in England, but in New
Zealand it’s the summer. So we do lots of things outside in the
sun.
Presenter Are there parties?
Jade Oh yes! My relatives have a party. We have a barbecue and we
cook sausages. And in our town, there are concerts. People
dance and sing.
Presenter What’s your favourite thing about Waitangi Day?
Jade Well we also go to the beach and swim – that’s great fun.
Presenter And now you’re in England. Do you celebrate here?
Jade Well it’s very cold here in February. But yes, we celebrate with
our friends from New Zealand. Here in London there are lots of
us! My friend plays the drums – we’re very noisy.

Presenter Now, you are both English but you speak two languages. Is that
right?
Anya Well, yes. My mother is from Poland. I speak Polish with her.
Presenter And do you read Polish, Anya?
Anya It’s difficult but, yes, I do. My grandparents send me emails.
They don’t understand English, so I write to them in Polish too.
Presenter That’s good. Do you go to Poland sometimes?
Anya I go once a year. I’ve got some cousins there. I practise my
Polish with them too!
Presenter And Callum. Can you speak Polish?
Callum No – But I’m interested in languages. I go to Mandarin classes
at school?
Presenter Really? Is that difficult?
Anya Yes, it is. But I can say quite a lot. Mandarin hasn’t got an
alphabet. Each word has got a symbol – and there are about
100,000 symbols!
Presenter OK. How do you say “hello” in Mandarin?
Callum Erm. It’s ‘Ni hao’.
Presenter Great – Now I know one word of Mandarin!

Milly Hi Duncan. How’s your holiday in England?
Duncan Oh, it’s OK … but how are you? Are you having a good time in
Spain?
Milly Yes, it’s fantastic.

Milly Oh yes – sorry – it’s very warm here. I’m having a drink in the
café on the beach. I’m watching my brother – he’s surfing. He’s
really good now.

– he’s reading of course.
Duncan Sounds great. We’re camping and we’re staying in the tent a lot
– the weather is really bad.

Duncan Well – we play cards a lot! But at the moment we’re writing
some postcards. Anyway – enjoy yourself and give my love to

Jan I’m good thanks.
Presenter So Jan – everyone knows you are a great footballer, but what
about your country and your home town? Where are you from?
Jan I’m from a small town in the Czech Republic.

Jan Well, I think so, yes! There are many beautiful churches in the
town. There’s a castle near the town too. It’s very popular with
tourists.
Presenter So, is it an old town?
Jan Well, yes, but there is also a new part of the town. There are
many shops and bars and a big cinema – my favourite place.
Presenter Do you like films?
Jan Oh yes. My favourite actor is Leonardo DiCaprio. I watch all his
films.
Presenter And what sports can you do in the town?
Jan There’s a big sports centre near the castle. There’s a great
basketball club and a tennis club too.

Every weekend there’s a football match and the town is very
noisy – I love it!

brother’s called Andrew and he’s 15. He’s tall and he’s got short
brown hair and blue eyes. His birthday’s in December – it’s on

and it’s in the middle of winter too! He isn’t interested in sport –
