Paul Gustav Heinrich Bachmann (1837–1920) studied

mathematics at the University of Berlin and at G¨ottingen. In
1862 he received a doctorate in group theory and held positions
at the universities at Breslau and M¨unster. He wrote several
volumes on number theory, introducing the big-O notation in
his 1892 book.
