CANDIDATE’S PERFORMANCE REPORT

PEPERIKSAAN : SIJIL PELAJARAN MALAYSIA

TAHUN : 2017

MATA PELAJARAN : CHEMISTRY 2

KOD KERTAS : 4541/2

NAMA KETUA PEMERIKSA BERSAMA :

KOD PEMERIKSA : M 1107 (QUESTION 1)

1. THE FORMAT OF QUESTION PAPER

The format of this years’ paper is similar to the one of last year. The question
paper consists of Section A, Section B and Section C. 6 questions in section A,
2 questions on Section B and 2 questions on Section C. A total of 60 mark for
section A, 20 marks in Section B and 20 marks in Section C. The

2. OVERALL PERFORMANCE

As a whole student showed average performance. Most students were able to

answer basic questions involving low level understanding. However students
generally had problem answering questions involving definition. Students tend
to miss out on the key words. The students who answered question 9 lost mark
in procedure as many key points were left out although they had the general
ideas.

3. PERFORMANCE ACCORDING TO THE GROUP

3.1 EXCELLENT CANDIDATES ( ≥ 70 marks)

The excellent students seem to have a clear understanding of the questions

and used the information well to answer precisely. Most of them were able to
grasp the important points and deliver accurately which attained them good
marks. Most good candidates were aware of the correct technique of answering
which ensured that they gained points accordingly. This group of students were
also able to answer questions involving diagram and graph well. They were
able to draw correct diagram with a detailed labeling. They were also able to
write correct, balanced chemical and ionic equation at required places to help
them answer questions efficiently apart from granting them with marks at
necessary places.

3.2 AVERAGE CANDIDATES (25-69 marks)

The average candidates seem to have no basic conceptual understanding

which they were able to apply in right places to get them points. However most
students had problem answering questions involving comparison and diagram
drawing. They were able to draw basic diagram with some correct features
which sometimes attained points to them. They were able to write some correct
chemical or ionic equations which sometimes attained points. They were also
able to answer basic questions. However, they seem to have poor
understanding on questions involving observation. Most of the time, they were
unable to state the observations although the question required them to. Apart
from that the students were also unable to form proper sentences to convey
their points although they had the basic understanding. This made their
answers unclear and made it hard for the marker to allot them with marks.

3.3 POOR CANDIDATES ( < 25 marks)

Students from this category had very poor conceptual understanding of

chemistry. They were unable to understand the questions. The students were
also unable to use the information given in the question to their benefits. They
could not answer reasoning questions well. Diagram and graph plotting
questions were also unfavorable to this group of students. However it is
important to note that there were questions that allowed them to try answering
with their limited knowledge. This group of students also had very poor
understanding of questions involving calculations. They were not able to use
the information given to solve the problems given. They also used the terms
electrons, ion, atom and molecules wrongly in most places.

6. SUGGESTION TO CANDIDATES

1. Read the question carefully to understand the task. Candidate needs to read the
question and collect the information given before answering the question
2. Should plan in writing the answer to make sure the answers are correct, accurate and
precise including using the right terms.
3. Answer should contain accurate and precise facts in detail to avoid misunderstanding,
wrong interpretation and doubt.
4. Must fully master all basic chemistry concepts especially the mole concept and periodic
table of element.
5. Understand when to use the formula and name
6. Write unit when doing calculation
7. Memorize chemical symbol in order to write balance equation

9. Can differentiate between atom, ion and molecule
10. Can differentiate between electrochemical series and reactivity series.
11. Use scientific term correctly, correct grammar and language in answering the question.

7. SUGGESTION TO TEACHERS

1. Teaching and learning must cover all chapters.

2. Give exercise right after teaching each topic to enhance learning.
3. Enhance teaching and learning by mastering chemistry concept especially mole concept.
4. Teach student how to draw correct diagram with complete labeling – not by asking the
student to copy it from text book.
5. Always give student task with question at difference level of difficulty.
6. Guide student to understand task and on how to write good answers.
7. Expose students on how to write good essay
8. Teacher should ensure that the candidates understand the application that is being
taught in everyday life because some of questions on application to daily life.
9. Always use correct and accurate terms and give accurate meaning of concept in
teaching and learning.
10. Always encourage student to use correct grammar and language in answering question.
